The first meeting of the season between Belmont and Lipscomb was everything fans could expect and more between the closest rivalry in NCAA Division I basketball. The energy was electric in Allen Arena during the hard-fought battle, but Lipscomb came up just short losing 73-67 to the Bruins. “We didn’t get the result we wanted, but we sure played hard,” says head coach Lennie Acuff. “We got down pretty good in the second half and was short-handed the last 10 minutes, but our guys kept fighting, clawing and scraping their way to stay in it,”. This was the first time Casey Alexander returned to Allen Arena for a game after taking the head coach position at Belmont. Alexander was the head coach at Lipscomb for six seasons leading the team to an NCAA Tournament appearance and an NIT Finals appearance just last year. “Belmont is a good team and they’ve been playing fantastic, but we had a chance tonight and that’s all we wanted at the end. I was really, really proud of our guy,” says Acuff. Lipscomb entered halftime up by one, 33-32, after going on a 10-0 and a 12-5 run at the end of the first half. The Bruins came out of halftime looking for revenge. The bruins had a 12-0 run at the beginning of the second half. Reducing plastic on college campuses has been a hot topic in Nashville ever since Vanderbilt completely eliminated single-use plastic on campus earlier this fall. So what is Lipscomb doing to eliminate plastic on campus? “To my knowledge at this point in time there really isn’t any initiative from the campus side or from the dining services side to try to work through eliminating or reducing plastic,” says Director of Dining Services, Wolcott Fairy. “At Vanderbilt, the initiative was driven primarily by the student groups. So as I was reading the article I could see that the students lobbied to the university, and the leadership groups, and was able to have them move into a direction that started with water bottles.” In the past, when students have tried to start initiatives they are quickly turned down. “In the past, the university did have recycling, but in the past couple of years those had been taken away,” says student Hannah Owens. “So one of my good friends and I reached out to an organization on campus to see if recycling could be brought back and to see why it was taken off-campus. They said no other part of the school was supporting recycling and it was too expensive for them. Now if you want to recycle you have to drive off campus, which is not convenient for students who do not have cars here.” SGA President Jack Weber is looking to start a formal recommendation process where SGA members can present a formal proposal to the Board of Trustees. “I think the thing on campus, in terms of what is going...

The Lipscomb volleyball team fell in a tough three-setter to Florida Gulf Coast University in its final home game of the 2019 season. The Eagles, standing at first in the ASUN, did not leave the Bisons, standing at number four, much room for error. The Bisons held their own in the first set, but after much back-and-forth FGCU took the first set 25-21. “I really liked how we came out in the first set, and I thought we did a nice job in the second as well,” said coach Brandon Rosenthal. “Unfortunately we had a player bang her head and cut herself. We had to pause and switch up, but that is part of the game of volleyball.” Lipscomb had a spark starting off the second set leading 8-2. This caused FGCU to call a timeout, and they went on a run that led them to win the set 25-19. “At just a couple of crucial points, we weren’t as disciplined as we can be,” said Rosenthal. “It’s not a question of skill, it’s just a matter of us executing.” The Bisons did not have much fight left in the third set, with a total of 11 errors. The Eagles took it 25-14. “I thought we did a really nice job of extending some rallies,” Rosenthal said. “At the end of the day when you play a top team like FGCU, they make you earn points,” he said. “We had a couple of really good chances, but we just couldn’t finish. The 2019-2020 season is off to a hot start for the men’s basketball team, which defeated Rhodes College 104-55 Tuesday night. It is a new era for this team, now being led by Lennie Acuff, the 19th coach in program history. “I told the guys after the game that this is my 30th season as a head coach, but tonight was as nervous as I have ever been for an opening game,” Acuff said. “It’s a new place, and I wanted the team to play well.” “I thought we played really hard in the first half, we just didn’t play very well. But in the second half, I felt we slowed the game down a little bit and got in our lane. I am proud of the way the guys played.” Making his first career start, Andrew Fleming joined center Ahsan Asadullah in double figures with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting. The guard — one of only two seniors on the squad — also reeled in seven boards and matched a team high with four assists. “We put in a lot of work over the summer working every day,” Fleming said. “I love these teammates and am excited to play with them. They are all great guys, and you can see on the floor we have fun. I think our camaraderie translates to us playing well on the court together.” Asadullah had the first double-double of his career with 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Bisons. The Lipscomb volleyball team lost their six-match win streak to Stetson in an intense five-set battle in Allen Arena. The Hatters defeated the Bison’s 3-2. “Our message all week was about how good Stetson is defensive. Even though you know it’s going to happen, they do a fantastic job,” said head coach Brandon Rosenthal. The Bison’s got off to a hot start leading 16-6 early in the first set. The Hatter’s fought back to within two, but the Bison’s pulled out the first set 25-20. Set two started out in a very similar fashion. Lipscomb had the lead 17-10. However, Stetson’s defense wasn’t going to give up easily. A quick surge tied them 17-17. After a hard-fought set, the Hatter’s secured the set 27-25. “Set two was kind of weird. We just couldn’t get it done and unfortunately. I didn’t make a quick enough sub in a couple places, and they beat us down the stretch of set two,” says Rosenthal. After also losing set three the Bison’s made a comeback in Set 4. They made an offensive surge to secure the set 25-23. “Set 4 I thought we did a nice job, again, executing down the stretch wasn’t there, but that was the issue all day for us,” says Rosenthal. Lipscomb got out early in the fifth set leading 4-0. They eventually took kept their lead 10-8, forcing Stetson to call a timeout.
