The Lipscomb Academy Mustangs football team took on the Page High School Patriots this Friday. The game started off with a 36-yard field goal from the LA Mustangs with four minutes and 16 seconds on the clock leading them into the second quarter with a three-point lead on the patriots. After a Lipscomb punt, the Patriots took over first and 10 from their 45-yard line. The Patriots then punched it in from 4 yards out with seven minutes and 14 seconds on the clock, gaining a 7-3 lead on the Mustangs. A 19-yard pass resulted in a first down for the mustangs with four minutes and 23 seconds to go, the mustangs regained their lead with a score of 10-7. Two minutes later, number 26-Porter, strikes again with another Mustangs Touchdown bringing the halftime score to a 17-7 lead going into the third quarter. The Mustangs started the second half with the ball at the 20-yard line. On the fourth down, the ball was turned over and the Patriots regained possession at their 35-yard line and ran it in for six, gaining the extra point. The third quarter ended with a score of 17-14, Patriots ball. The mustangs then intercepted the ball and forced the turnover, taking possession over the ball and setting Lyles up to run into to the Patriots 22 yard line. The game went back and forth throughout the 2nd and 3rd quarters but resulted in a 24-14 win for mustangs. Lipscomb Academy will play at home against Goodpasture next Friday night. ...

Yesterday at the gathering, 4 students from the Bahamas spoke about how Hurricane Dorian damaged their country and then gave ways for other students to be of help to the Bahamas. The Bahamas are off the coast of Florida and the capital, Nassau island is where these 4 students are from. This all started when The National Hurricane Center issued a state of a tropical depression on August 24th, but 6 days later the storm intensified and developed into a category 5 hurricane. The hurricane hit both the Abaco and Grand Bahama islands. The record-breaking hurricane passed Nassau but has left many of the Bahamian people who evacuated homeless and displaced on the island. The death count from the hurricane has unofficially continued to rise past the 100 marks and will only continue to rise as there are still many people missing and unidentified. The estimated damage to the Bahamas is in the billions. Lipscomb is offering opportunities to donate to the Bahamas through its website as well as through phone calls. Celea Brown prayed for the Bahamas and over the Bahamian people saying, “Dear God, We know that the Bahamas are a place where you live, we know that your people worship you and you are the center of our entire life. God, I pray for the spirit of restoration, the spirit of peace, the spirit of miracles on my Bahama land and my people. God, I just thank you for this entire student body. As Hurricane Dorian hits the east coast, Lipscomb students and faculty have started to reflect on the university’s direct connections to the areas affected. This week at The Gathering, Vice President of Student Life Al Sturgeon spoke about how there are 4 students from the Bahamas living on campus. All of the students’ families have evacuated to safer areas, but Sturgeon still began chapel with a special prayer for those in the Bahamas and any others soon to be affected by the hurricane in the United States. The National Hurricane Center released an update saying that Hurricane Dorian has ramped its self back up to a category three and is expected to hit the coast of South Carolina later this evening with winds of 115 miles per hour. Lipscomb Alum Madeline Montgomery of WPEC CBS12 News, based in Palm Beach, was sent to Stuart Florida to watch and report on the storm. Madeline said that as the hurricane gets closer, officials advise citizens of each area to, “Pack a hurricane kit, which is everything from food to water, clothes and anything they might need in their car. And then from there, the closer they get to the storm they start closing government buildings, schools and then they start ordering evacuations.” “How the evacuations work is everyone is evacuated by zone. Lipscomb alum Briston Maroney took the 615 stage to begin Live on the Green’s first-ever 4-day weekend festival Thursday night. Maroney was a music major at Lipscomb and has since gone on to tour and play his “rock” music. This night was the first August show with dual stages. Maroney played on the 615 stage, while there was also a main stage. Despite the fact Maroney was on the smaller of the two stages, he certainly was not lacking a crowd. The street in front of the stage was lined with people of all ages. While Maroney played the 615 stage, another Nashville native Morgxn played the main stage. Morgxn showcased his new song titled, “A New Way,” with crowd-pleasing lyrics advocating acceptance of “different” people. For the past four years, I’ve run a travel blog on my own, but now I feel it is time to share my love for traveling with the community surrounding my home, Nashville and Lipscomb University. Every other week I am planning to share a location that’s not too far from Lipscomb and makes for a perfect-length weekend or day trip. This being a long weekend for students, I have picked a destination that’s a bit farther from Lipscomb, but still a perfect day trip. This week I would like to introduce, The Obed. The Obed National Park is located in Wartburg, Tennessee, a little under two hours from Gatlinburg. I had never heard of the park until a friend of mine shared a post on Instagram of a stunning view in the park. Obed is known most for its challenging whitewater rafting, rock climbing, camping and hiking trails. There are several trails at the park, including Lilly Bluff Trail, Emory River Nature Trail, Point Trail and the Cumberland Trail. Lilly Bluff is an overlook point of the Cumberland River Gorge, and the overlook trail takes you right to it. The overlook trail is only 0.3-miles long. This next trail is my favorite and is called The Point Trail; it is a 3.8-mile round trip trail and a moderate to strenuous hike with climbing and the crossing of creeks. The Point Trail dips down into Melton Mill Branch and involves a moderate amount of easy climbing. Point Trail contains many turns and a beautiful scenic overlook of the gorge as well.
