Lipscomb’s Quest team kicked off the week with the first tailgate of the semester in a combined effort with athletics. The tailgate offered food from Taco Mama, free tank tops and a chance to sign up for service day. Service day will take place today from one till four. The Quest groups will take to different locations and do community service projects around the Nashville area. Following the Bison Bash yesterday evening was a neon night at the Brentwood skate center. What’s a better way to make a first impression on fellow Lipscomb students than wiping out on roller skates? After the neon night, students headed back to campus to participate in this semesters first “On Wednesdays, We Eat”. This event is held nearly every Wednesday on Lipscomb’s campus throughout the school year. Typically a Lipscomb student attending will get to watch a free concert from a local band and eat a one-dollar meal. While the eating and free concert took place, the transfer students headed to Jeni’s on 12 South to mingle with other transfers. Lipscomb’s campus was busy yesterday as advanced sessions took place, new students moved in and preparations were made for the new school year around campus. Greek life and quest team members were around campus helping the freshman and transfers as they prepared their rooms for a new school year. Each dorm hall had snacks, drinks, photobooths or games, to create a welcoming environment for the new residents. Lipscomb announced the launch of the new School of Hospitality and Entertainment Management major on August 29th, 2018. This semester will be the first time student are enrolled and taking classes in the new major under director Beth Morrow. The program is said to offer undergraduate and graduate degrees as well as professional certificates and will have four areas of emphasis; lodging, food and beverage, tourism and entertainment. According to an article released earlier in the summer, the program will be a collaborative instruction from the “George Shinn College of Entertainment & the Arts, College of Business, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences.” The collaborative effort from three colleges will create students who are diverse and ready to take on the hospitality industry through entertainment, food and beverage, management, hospitality and more. With Nashville’s fast-growing tourism and entertainment industry, this program is adaptive and almost nesecarry of Lipscomb’s environment. To give students practical real-life experience, Lipscomb has taken advantage of its downtown Nashville neighbor and will be using its downtown Spark campus and Bison Inn, the main-campus hotel containing 82 rooms. Students will essentially be given paid jobs on a rotation around campus with faculty advising them along the way. This year’s Live on the Green lineup is packed with artists, and it’s all FREE! Live on the Green is a festival put on each fall by Nashville radio station WRLT Lightning 100. The concert series takes place in Public Square Park — adjacent to the historic Metro Courthouse — beginning this Thursday, August 15. Other dates are August 22 and 29, as well as the rest of the long Labor Day weekend, August 30-September 1. Lipscomb’s very own Briston Maroney will be playing the 615 stage from 5:15-6 August 29. Ths festival has a mission of sustainability and organizers state “Live On The Green is committed to being Nashville’s premier environmentally-friendly music festival. Each year, work to further reduce our carbon footprint, (is) bringing us closer to our ultimate goal of operating as a completely waste-free, carbon-neutral event. We strive to incorporate sustainable practices in all facets of our music festival – ranging anywhere from using energy-efficient LED lights festival-wide and reusing banners, to selecting the green roof as the location to host the event.” Along with a wide range of music, the festival also has food and beverage vendors as well as merch and other local booths set up and VIP experiences for purchase. A rule-change by the NCAA has forced Lipscomb to move the three-point lines around the goals at Allen Arena back to the international distance, forcing cosmetic changes to the striping on the floor. The international distance is 22 feet, 1-3/4 inches, quite a bit farther than the old NCAA distance of 20-feet, nine inches from the basket. The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel “also approved resetting the shot clock at 20 seconds after a field goal attempt hits the rim and the offensive team rebounds the ball in the front-court,” according to the NCAA. This new shot-clock rule, as well as an international distance three-point line, were experimental rules in the 2019 NIT, in which Lipscomb’s men made it to the championship game. The NCAA decided a full 30-second shot clock is not needed, since the offensive team has already secured the rebound and is in the front-court. The new three-point striping will mean necessary change to the relatively new Lipscomb court. The court in Allen Arena had to be redone after Liberty University in 2013 claimed sole use of the “LU” logo, eventually forcing Lipscomb to replace the initials on the court with the university’s name.
