Jesica Beaty, a former sports writer for Lumination, now has a new beat: Major League Baseball wife. Beaty, a 2015 journalism and new media alumna, married her high school sweetheart and Belmont alum Matt Beaty. Matt played baseball for the Bruins and for the last few years has made his way up through the Los Angeles Dodgers’ minor-league organization. Jesica and Matt have been married for two and a half years. After the two got married, Jesica left her full-time job as a managing editor with The Aransas Pass (Texas) Progress and Ingleside Index to follow Matt. The couple has moved around quite a bit. Currently, the Beatys reside in Oklahoma, home of the Triple A Oklahoma City Dodgers. Matt was drafted by the Dodgers in 2015 and has played in the Rookie, Single A, Double A and Triple A leagues. Matt was added to the Dodgers’ 40-man lineup back in November. This year the Dodgers used one of his options and sent him to the minor league during spring training; this allows him to be called up and down at any time this year. Matt was called up by the Dodgers earlier this month for a game against the San Francisco Giants. “It was about 12:30 at night, and the Triple A manager called Matt,” Jesica said. “I was so excited for him and just so excited it was finally happening.” During that game, in his first at-bat in the major leagues, he got a hit and his first RBI. A Lipscomb professor has been taken into custody in Sumner County on charges of aggravated abuse of a 5-month-old baby. Daniel Gordon, 36, was arrested on Wednesday. He is being held on a $200,000 bond. “He has been suspended until the resolution of this unfortunate and sad situation,” according to a statement from the university. “We are supporting the family during this time by providing pastoral care and intentionally seeking other ways to assist the Gordon family.” Gordon has been a full-time employee since August 2018 as a professor in the College of Liberal Arts and Science. Gordon previously taught for four years part-time in the College of Bible and Ministry at Lipscomb. “Lipscomb is a community that — driven by our Christian faith — seeks to be authentic in who we are and what we do,” said President Lowry in an email sent to the Lipscomb Community on Friday. “In any community this size there are a number of individuals at any given time who grapple with life circumstances — both joys and challenges that they would never have imagined would be part of their story — the birth of a child, academic accomplishments, challenging times in marriages, the loss of loved ones, financial struggles or a research discovery. “We often share the joys of our work together but we also share the moments of sadness and uncertainty. Lipscomb University awarded 560 undergraduate students and 325 graduate students their degrees on Saturday Afternoon in Allen Arena. President Lowry gave an honorable mention to many at the commencement — he thanked the veterans for their service, congratulated athletes on their tremendous seasons, as well as noticing every student has a story and thanking the people who supported them in their journey to graduation. Reactions were full of smiles, laughter and tears as the students crossed the stage one by one shaking hands with the professionals who got them to this moment of commencement. Lipscomb’s SGA put on the annual spring concert Saturday night, featuring the headliner, Johnnyswim. The couple, Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano formed their duo in 2015 in Nashville, Tennessee. During the concert, the indie-folk duo introduced their new album Moonlight and shared stories of their journey in the music industry, as well as Ramirez’ experience as a Nashville resident and former Trevecca student. Sudano shared the couple’s love story, followed by Ramirez serenading her with a song on their new album titled “Amanda.” After the song, Sudano shared the first time Ramirez saw her. “That’s the woman I’m going to marry,” Ramirez said, remembering the first time he saw Sudano. He added that his previous girlfriend broke up with him “on the spot.” The couple closed the concert by entering the crowd and standing on the chairs in the center of Collins Alumni Auditorium amidst the crowd of students....

Lipscomb University “Session Players” hosted former American Idol contestants Colton Dixon and special guest Cody Fry on Wednesday night in Collins Auditorium for an evening of music. Cody Fry opened the night performing with student musicians from the Session Players. Dr. Ben Blasko introduced Dixon and shared a few words of how his friendship with the musician began. Blasko shared how Dixon’s song “Through All of It” got him through many personal rough life events and how much the song meant to him. Dixon performed that song tonight, and Blasko said it was special to be able to direct the session players in that song. Dixon’s wife, Annie Dixon, also made a special appearance tonight during his performance of “Through All of It.” Dixon ended the concert around 8:30 p.m., noting that his house is full of “big Preds fans,” and he was going to get the audience home in time for the game. « ‹ of 2 ›...
