Chapel office unveils new breakout options for students

With the amount of students enrolling at Lipscomb growing every year, the chapel office is choosing to grow along with the campus by offering a wider range of chapels that can be attended. The chapel office at Lipscomb University loves to keep things fresh every year, and this semester is no exception. With all the changes going on, it makes sense that this year’s chapel theme is “Journey.” Following along with that theme, the chapel office decided to do something different and add a twist on breakout chapels. Instead of only having the usual offerings that we have had for the past few years, students will now have a wider variety of focus breakouts that they can attend. These ten focus breakouts include various topics like men and women specific groups and a category on how to share your faith. The classes even go as far as offering advice on how to be faithful with your finances. With the more extensive variety, the chapel office hopes to gain interest from students in at least one of the special subjects that are offered. Despite the limited space, the focus breakouts will offer a unique twist to the usual chapel schedule. Students will be able to be more involved and have a more intimate chapel environment due to the lowered amount of crowds. These focus breakouts will be held for six weeks from Sept. 4 to Oct. 9. Many students are excited for the chance to get more involved in breakout chapels. “I usually go to the breakout chapels in Collins or Swang, so having more options is a good thing because...

‘Maleficent’ spins unique twist on classic character

Disney always has a way of adding an interesting touch to movies as the years have gone by. Gone are the days where the princess is dependent on the prince and helpless. Recent releases like Tangled, Pixar’s Brave, and Frozen have all shown fans that heroes can come in the most surprising forms. Sleeping Beauty has a tale that almost everyone knows, but Disney flipped it upside down with Maleficent, a live-action reimagining of the classic Disney animated film. One of the most neglected parts of Sleeping Beauty was the reasons as to why Maleficent was as evil as she was. Why did she have it out so badly for the king and queen? What was her problem with Aurora? These questions were all answered swiftly in Maleficent. Viewers are introduced to the title character as a young child, where the audience is shown her growth emotionally and physically. Be prepared to relate to Maleficent on a whole different emotional scale. Angelina Jolie is spectacular as Maleficent. She portrays the infamous villain with humor, heartbreak and unconditional love. The heavy undertone of feminism throughout the film was incredibly refreshing. Also, Jolie’s makeup and outfits are absolutely flawless. Elle Fanning is gorgeous as Princess Aurora. Every outfit she wears is beautiful, but as in the original adaptation, she does not contribute much to the film as a character. Fun fact of trivia here: Princess Aurora has the least amount of lines in a film out of any Disney princess. Newcomer Brenton Thwaites is also a little underwhelming, though still breathtaking, as Prince Charming. It would have been nice to see Aurora and...

‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ showcases a well-spun web

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had many elements that made the movie seem like it could be a tough one to watch.  With a large cast list and a score created by Hans Zimmer with influence from Pharrell Williams, it was easy for anyone to be skeptical. The major surprise though was how easily the elements of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 came together. From the beginning of the film, an emotional connection is built with character Max Dillon after he is saved by Spider-Man. Jamie Foxx makes the viewer feel for his character, despite us already knowing his fate as the villain Electro. The music added even more to every scene. One wouldn’t think that Hans Zimmer and Pharrell Williams would ever make sense together, but the duo, along with a host of other musicians, make for a great team. Viewers are given a glimpse into Electro’s mind through music. It isn’t long after the audience is introduced to Electro that we meet another new player, Harry Osborne. The dark elements of Harry are brought out even more by Dane DeHaan and his constant look of mischief. It might be just the designer eye bags, but DeHaan evokes the anger and sadness that Osborn feels in such an impressive way, while also succeeding in making the audience laugh. The movie had a large amount of comedy embedded throughout, but don’t be fooled. The emotions you feel during the film will be intense, although I won’t say why for those who have not read the comics or succeeded in staying spoiler-free. Along with humor, the romantic elements were all over the...

‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2’ offers successful finale to series

The tagline “It has all led up to this moment” is no exaggeration. I went into The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 with almost no expectations due to the fear of being disappointed. After watching the film, I can honestly say that my fears were not necessary. The film was broken down perfectly from beginning to end. Things can seem a little rushed in some parts, but that’s expected when trying to fit a huge book into two movies. The movie flies by due to the pace that’s set in place. I found the pacing to be refreshing because in the past, I’ve felt bored in some scenes of other Twilight films. The acting was also infinitely sounder than past films. I didn’t find myself laughing as much at parts that were meant to be serious. Director Bill Condon created such an epic scene towards the end. My adrenaline is pumping just thinking about it! I believe that all major fans of the Twilight series will be very pleased with the outcome. Bring your tissues though, because at the very end of the film, it hit me that the series was over, and I sat in the theater and cried like a baby. I’m also a very tame fan compared to others. So let that be a warning about how high emotions will run. If you have younger siblings, be wary. This violence is nothing like Twilight films from the past. I was a little surprised at how much more intense the violence was this time around. For adults and teenagers, it will be fine, but younger children who...
Revamp your back-to-school wardrobe with these tips

Revamp your back-to-school wardrobe with these tips

It’s hard to believe that soon summer is going to be over. It feels like it only just began! One of my favorite parts of a new school year is back-to-school fashion. There is never a better time to add on to your wardrobe! These are a few of the things that I find to be fun ways to brighten up the beginning of the school year.   Polka dots: I have noticed more and more how many polka dot things there have been in stores lately. I don’t want to admit it, but I definitely have a problem with buying polka dot clothing in excess. The good thing about dots is that you can mix and match them, or wear a fun skirt with a T-shirt or blouse tucked into it. Polka dots are such a versatile print!                         High-waisted shorts: I have been absolutely obsessed with high-waisted shorts lately! I started seeing them all over the place and had to try them out myself. They are now one of the most essential things in my closet. The only problem is that sometimes it can be hard to find a decent pair without spending a lot of money. I would suggest going to a thrift store to buy a pair. I found my pairs of shorts at Goodwill! That way, you can get the look without the insane price tag.                         Ankle boots: This is another trend that I have noticed surfacing on the fashion scene....
