Baseball drops midweek matchup against Auburn Tigers

Baseball drops midweek matchup against Auburn Tigers

After bad weather moved their game from Auburn to Nashville, Lipscomb played host and lost to the Auburn Tigers 9-7. The Tigers got on the board first with a solo home run from junior infielder Tyler Miller in the second inning, but the Bisons quickly responded with a scoring run in the bottom of the inning bringing home four batters and taking a 4-1 lead. Auburn didn’t lose the lead for long as they bounced back in the top of the third with a solo home run from junior outfielder and another home run from Miller that brought home three batters, and retook the lead for the Tigers 5-4. A pitching change for the Bisons quieted the Tigers in the 4th inning, but the scoring started again in the fifth inning and extended their lead to 9-4. Senior designated hitter Chris Bashlor and junior outfielder Maddux Houghton added two home runs for the Bisons bringing the score to 9-7. Back to back 1-2-3 innings for Lipscomb in the eighth and ninth innings for pitchers junior Tyler Drabick and sophomore Tyler Guilfoil put the Bisons in position to tie the game. The Bisons put both sophomore catcher Chaz Bertolani and junior infielder Malik Williams on base, but left both runners stranded, which ended the game.  With the loss, Lipscomb falls to 5-6 as they prepare to open ASUN conference play at home this weekend against Kennesaw State in a three game series. The Tigers improve to 11-5 and will take on #4 Ole Miss this weekend for their conference opener.  Continue to follow Lumination Network for all your Lipscomb Sports...
Lady Bisons hand the Kennesaw State Owls their first loss

Lady Bisons hand the Kennesaw State Owls their first loss

The Lady Bisons took the first of back-to-back games against Kennesaw State in a dominating 3-0 sweep.   Coming into the game, the Owls were undefeated with 10 wins, all in the ASUN. The Lady Bisons went into the game with 10-2 record, 7-1 record in the conference. The top two teams in the conference came out with speed and aggressiveness. They traded blows, but Lipscomb took an early lead 9-4 benefitting from two Samantha Rubal kills.  The Owls upped the defensive intensity with a few consecutive blocks to cut it to 9-7. Lipscomb held the lead till the late part of the set until the teams found themselves tied at 23. Kennesaw State players Claire Parsons and Dani Ballou both scored two kills leading to the tie game. The set ended with a 25-23 score in the Lady Bisons favor after a Kamryn Bacus kill and a double touch on the Owls.   In contrast, the second set was all Lipscomb from the first serve. The Lady Bisons started with a 4-0 burst including a Garrett Joiner kill and Megan Kuper ace. Throughout the set, the Lady Bisons’ offense was very effective, and the Owls struggled with errors. The Lady Bisons led by as many as 11 in this set and led by a score of 21-10 at one point, finishing the set in a dominant fashion by a score of 25-13. The biggest separating factor after two sets was hitting percentage, with the Lady Bisons at .273 and the Owls only at a .074 clip.   After losing two sets for just the second time this...
Lipscomb women’s basketball season ends with ASUN semifinal loss against FGCU

Lipscomb women’s basketball season ends with ASUN semifinal loss against FGCU

By many metrics, this was a good season for the Lipscomb Lady Bisons basketball team. For a program that had won four combined conference games in the past two seasons, Lipscomb improved with a winning record in ASUN play and an undefeated home record. That successful season came to a close with a 59-44 loss against the No. 1 seeded FGCU Eagles on Friday afternoon. 13 points from center Dorie Harrison and 11 from senior Taylor Clark were the highlights, as Lipscomb played close multiple times but could never really sustain momentum. Surprisingly, the troublemaker for FGCU was not sophomore transfer Kiersten Bell, who came in with nearly 25 points a game. She managed nine points on 3-of-17 from the floor. Rather, it was Aaliyah Stanley, whose 25 points led the way for the Eagles. Lipscomb went 16-of-57 from the floor, while FGCU went 16-of-58. But FGCU made 11 three-pointers as opposed to just four for the Lady Bisons, and Lipscomb struggled from the charity stripe (8-of-14). The game started out with a major stalemate, with neither team scoring until the 6:31 mark in the first quarter off a layup from Bell. Lipscomb used an 11-0 run to take a lead of 18-15 with 6:06 left in the second but got shut out going into halftime with a 26-18 deficit. The third quarter wasn’t much better, with Lipscomb down 39-25 after a Stanley triple with just under three minutes left. Lipscomb used an 8-0 run early in the fourth to narrow the deficit to just nine with 6:48 left in the fourth. That was the closest the Lady Bisons would...
No. 4 Lipscomb wins first conference tournament game since 2017 to advance to the ASUN semifinals

No. 4 Lipscomb wins first conference tournament game since 2017 to advance to the ASUN semifinals

Despite trailing for most of the game, Lipscomb was able to defeat Stetson 50-47 after forcing overtime late in the 4th quarter.  Junior guard Jane Deason came out strong in the first quarter putting six points in the book for the Bisons in the first five minutes, but as has been the story for much of Lipscomb’s season, scoring droughts quieted the Lady Bisons for several minutes at a time, the longest of which occurred in the second and third quarters where Lipscomb had no points for 6 minutes, giving the Hatters their biggest lead of the afternoon at 10, 36-26. Luckily for the Bisons, although Stetson was able to take the lead for most of the game, scoring droughts of their own, as well as foul trouble from key contributors, kept the game low scoring.  In the fourth quarter, Lipscomb slowly got into more of a rhythm and chipped away at the Lady Hatters lead.  Junior Dorie Harrison and freshman Jordan Peete made several crucial free throws and layups to bring the game to one-possession before Deason’s three-pointer with one minute remaining in regulation forced overtime.  Harrison, who finished the day as Lipscomb’s leading scorer with 18 points, kept her scoring going into the overtime period, getting all seven of the Bisons’ overtime points, and clinching the victory. The Lady Bisons will be in action again tomorrow at 1 PM against the reigning ASUN champion FGCU Eagles. Lipscomb ties with Liberty to remain atop the ASUN’s northern division

Lipscomb ties with Liberty to remain atop the ASUN’s northern division

Coming into Thursday night, Lipscomb was undefeated in conference play this season. They remain undefeated after 110 minutes of hard-fought soccer that ended in a 0-0 draw against the Liberty Flames.  Lipscomb leads their side of the conference in goals scored at 10 and features an all-star roster, including reigning ASUN player of the week sophomore midfielder Kelli Beiler, but on the other side of the pitch, Liberty leads the conference in goals allowed. Early in the game, it seemed that Liberty’s defense had met their match as several promising crosses entered the box from the Lipscomb attack. But when faced with the 50-50 balls within their own 18 Liberty found a way to win these matchups and clear the ball.  However, a handball in the first half almost changed the dynamic of the game, as Lipscomb received a set-piece just outside the box that was beautifully placed by sophomore striker Molly Grant into the upper right corner of the net, but was even more skillfully saved by sophomore goalkeeper Melody Jayroe. Jayroe proved to be a thorn in the Bisons’ sides as she maintained a clean slate despite several promising attempts from Lipscomb.  In the other net, freshman goalkeeper CJ Graham got her first conference start for the Bisons and did so masterfully, even while battling the 20 mph gusts.  With the impeccable goalie prowess, the match remained scoreless forcing two golden goal overtime periods, where the play of both goalies continued to impress despite the physical and aggressive play of both offenses.  With the tie, Lipscomb moves to 2-0-1 and Liberty moves to 2-1-1, giving Lipscomb the...
No. 4 Lady Bisons open ASUN Tournament play Thursday

No. 4 Lady Bisons open ASUN Tournament play Thursday

The fourth-seeded Lady Bisons open conference tournament play Thursday afternoon in Kennesaw, Georgia against the fifth-seeded Stetson Hatters. In head coach Lauren Sumski’s first season, Lipscomb is coming off of one of their best seasons in recent memory, going undefeated at home for the first time in the program’s Division-I era.  The Bisons enter the tournament with their highest seeding since the 2017-2018 campaign when they fell in the semifinals to the FGCU Eagles. A huge reason for the Bisons’ success is senior ASUN second-team senior forward Taylor Clark, who is averaging 12.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game for Lipscomb. Clark has been a leader on and off the court, and her versatility makes her an integral part of everything the Bisons do.  Joining Clark as an ASUN honoree is freshman Jordan Peete, who has already made a huge impact with Lipscomb in her first season, averaging 9.3 points per game.  For Lipscomb to advance, they will need to rely on Clark and Peete, as well as sophomore stalwarts Casey Collier and Jalyn Holcomb. Thursday afternoon Lipscomb will “host” the Stetson Lady Hatters in the one-site tournament location at Kennesaw State University. This new format was introduced to minimize travel in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 but will allow teams to have more consistency in between matchups.  The Lady Bisons are going to have quite a challenge hoping to clinch the automatic NCAA tournament bid. While Lipscomb swept Stetson in the regular season, the Hatters will be looking to bounce back in this third matchup of the season and keep their perfect record against the Bisons...
