The men’s basketball team faced off against Jacksonville in Allen Arena with hopes to pull out a win to end their 3-game losing streak. The Bisons fell short to the Dolphins in overtime 89-85, their record now 7-13 being 8th in the ASUN Conference. Despite the hard loss, Coach Lennie Acuff had nothing but positive words for his team. “It was a tough loss,” said Acuff. “I thought they played really really well, you have to tip your hat to them. After a rocky first half, the Bisons turned things around in the second half — taking a solid win over the Trevecca Trojans 96-72. This is the team’s first home win since the home opener against Rhodes on November 5th. Last week after the Bisons’ loss, Coach Acuff said, “I promise you, we get to January, we’re gonna be a tough battle.” This win is just one step to that “tough-battle” team coming in January. Ahsan Asadullah was a star player in tonight’s game. With 21 points, a career-high 8 assists and 6 rebounds. Asadullah shot 11-15 from the field. KJ Johnson also scored 21 points, 17 of which were in the second half. Michael Buckland and Greg Jones each shot 15 points as well. The Bisons only shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, allowing the Trojans to gain a 46-44 lead going into the second half. The Bisons came back ready for battle and shot 68.8 percent from the field. This win improves the Bisons record to 4-6 on the year. Despite the rough start and a small crowd, due to finals and Christmas break, the Bisons still pulled out a win before they enter their longest stretch of the season without a game. Sparked by Lady Bisons’ turnovers, the visiting Murray State Racers staged a late-game comeback to walk away with a 67-57 victory in a game that has Lipscomb coach Lauren Sumski perplexed. After holding the edge in the turnover battle in the first half, Lipscomb allowed 15 second-half turnovers while Murray State only allowed three. “We are better than that,” Sumski said after the Tuesday loss. “We are better than giving up 19 and 25 points in the third and fourth quarter.” Despite the fact that the Lady Bisons were unable to hit a three-point shot until late in the second quarter, it was Lipscomb that jumped out to an eight-point early in the game. Going into the halftime break, Sumski and her team still held a six-point lead, led by sophomore guard Jane Deason’s seven points and sophomore center Dorie Harrison’s six points. Entering the second half, the Lady Bisons extended their lead to 10 before four consecutive turnovers cut the lead to three. “They made a lot of the shots that we gave them from poor communication and poor transition,” Sumski said. The Racers took advantage of these missed opportunities from the Bisons and went on 25-9 run to close out the game behind sophomore guard Macey Turley’s 20 points and freshman forward Macie Gibson’s 19 points. “We are better than that defensively,” Sumski said. “But tonight I felt like they beat us to 50-50 balls, and they turned it on when it mattered. The 2019-2020 season is off to a hot start for the men’s basketball team, which defeated Rhodes College 104-55 Tuesday night. It is a new era for this team, now being led by Lennie Acuff, the 19th coach in program history. “I told the guys after the game that this is my 30th season as a head coach, but tonight was as nervous as I have ever been for an opening game,” Acuff said. “It’s a new place, and I wanted the team to play well.” “I thought we played really hard in the first half, we just didn’t play very well. For the first time in the history of Lipscomb basketball, a former Bison played in a regular-season NBA game. Garrison Mathews took the court for the Washington Wizards in their season opener against the Dallas Mavericks. With just under a minute left in the 4th quarter, Wizards coach Scott Brooks brought rookies Mathews and former Virginia Tech standout Justin Robinson in to close out the game for Washington. Mathews signed a two-way contract with the Wizards earlier this summer, which allows him to play in the NBA for 45 days and with the Wizards’ affiliate, the Capital City Go-Gos, for the remainder of the season. In his one minute of playing time, Mathews assisted fellow two-way player, Chris Chiozza, on a three, cutting the Mavericks winning margin to only eight, 108-100. However, Mathews was not the only player to make his NBA debut Wednesday night; across the court, fellow former Bison, Zach Flener, opened the season as a member of Dallas’s player development team. Prior to the game, Mathews and Flener were able to meet to wish each other luck as they both begin their new careers.
