The Northern Southern Belle: Spring break essentials

The Northern Southern Belle: Spring break essentials

In just a few days, all of us will be scattered around the world relaxing and enjoying the week off from class. While I’m headed north to beautiful, chilly New Hampshire, friends and peers are heading all over the world, spanning from the Caribbean to DC to California to Guatemala to China! Regardless of where you’re headed, I hope you’re ftoking forward to the time off. Although the climates and weather forecasts for where you’re headed may be different from the forecasts for your friends’ destinations, there are absolutely ways for all of us to stay in style. If you’re heading somewhere cold (like me!): I know it’s spring, which means it’s supposed to be warm, but unfortunately, some places are not going to be “sunny and 75” next week. There are ways to stay warm while also celebrating the coming springtime, many of which can be found in my previous article. While I know we’d all love to break out the sandals and shorts for break, it may not be possible if you’re going somewhere cold. Try jeans or capris and pair them with a cute floral top or one with a summer vibe. If it’s still a little chilly, add a light spring jacket or a cardigan. I love my springy cardigans, but I am always excited to pull out my favorite lightweight jackets. I have a pink one from Aeropostale that I just love, and I recently picked up an army green one at a thrift sale, too. Another thing I love about spring is that it is perfect for dresses and skirts. If you’re going...
The Northern Southern Belle: Spring trends to help your wardrobe blossom

The Northern Southern Belle: Spring trends to help your wardrobe blossom

The following is a biweekly fashion column, complemented by George Wong’s column LU’s GQ. The weather yesterday was so beautiful and gave me hope for a gorgeous, sunny spring ahead! With the warming temperatures (which will hopefully stick around soon instead of just coming every once in a while!) starting to make appearances again, we can finally begin to put away the chunky sweaters and warm boots in exchange for more springy pieces. With that being said, here are some pieces that can be great transitions into spring. Floral anything I absolutely love most floral prints and wear them all year round, but they’re especially good for spring. They go with the fresh, new vibe that the season brings and are perfect for matching the stunning flowers that will soon bloom. One of my favorite pieces that I have is a thin floral kimono. There are so many colors in it, which provides numerous outfit options. I can pair it with multiple different tops and even solid colored dresses. In addition to the kimono, I own several floral tops and dresses. I find the patterns flirty, fun and calming, and I think that goes along with the season. I have always been a skinny jean girl, but recently I have gotten into wearing other kinds of jeans, too! My favorite pair is a boyfriend cut pair with roses embroidered up the sides. I love pairing them with a solid red top and hoop earrings for a bright look.     Short sleeve dresses! My favorite thing to wear! I love the light, airy feeling of them and the ability to...
The Northern Southern Belle: Pieces you’ll love for Valentines Day

The Northern Southern Belle: Pieces you’ll love for Valentines Day

Thursday is the annual celebration of love, but it’s also a time to show off cute, romantic outfits. Whether you have a date planned with your sweetheart, or you’re planning on watching the classic movie “Valentine’s Day” with your best gal pals (my plans exactly), there’s something out there for you to wear to celebrate the season. We’re in luck, because stores have a wide variety of Valentine’s Day-related pieces for you to rock on the flower and chocolate-filled day. If you’re going for a night out with a fun and flirty dress, Altar’d State is perfect. They have a wide variety of red dresses, as well as floral ones, so you have options based on your personal style. Additionally, their options will let you choose if you prefer a tighter dress versus a more relaxed, flowing one. Pair with a cute pair of boots or heels and some red lipstick, and you’ll be set. Francesca’s also has an array of Valentine’s Day options, with an entire section online. They do have some dresses, but I am a big fan of some of their red and pink tops that can be paired with jeans or a cute jean skirt. Specifically, they have a red ribbed top with a jean skirt that I think is a super cute ensemble, but you can totally make your own at home with what you have, too. I have a pair of red sandal wedges that I think would look so cute with an outfit like this. Charming Charlie’s is the place for jewelry, with multiple Valentine’s Day-themed earring sets. If you don’t want...
The Northern Southern Belle: Preparing for possible snow, chilly temperatures in the South

The Northern Southern Belle: Preparing for possible snow, chilly temperatures in the South

Featured image by Anna Rogers I know I’ve already done a column about winter in the South, but since there is a possibility for some snow this week, I thought it might be good to circle back to this topic. While my fellow Clevelanders and Midwesterners are preparing for negative double digit temperatures this week (shoutout to you winter warriors, and prayers that you stay safe and warm!), Nashville’s supposed to experience some snow and cooler-than-normal temperatures that might be causing some wardrobe worry. Therefore, I figured I would give some advice from a lifelong-Northern girl on how to conquer the snow and cold in style. Long sleeves are probably the best idea for when the temps plummet and the snow starts to fall. Even with my heavy red peacoat that I love, I still get cold outside. Wearing a long sleeved top or a sweater helps with that, allowing me  to stay warmer as I walk to class or spend time outside. If you do not like long sleeves or are worried you might get too hot, try some layers. I love cardigans and kimonos to wear over short sleeved tops, and they’re great for if you get hot because you have the ability to take the long sleeves off. Not only do layers keep you warm and give versatility to an outfit, but they also allow a few pieces to create multiple looks! I got a new floral cardigan over break that I just absolutely love. It has quickly become a staple in my wardrobe because I can wear so much with it. It’s floral, so it...

The Northern Southern Belle: Fashion through the decades & how to incorporate them into your look today

Hello friends! Happy New Year! To start off 2019, I thought it would be fun to look back at six past decades and the fashion trends of each of them. In addition to seeing the styles shift every decade, there are ways to incorporate aspects of each of these decades into your wardrobe today. I was thrilled about this idea and then became even more excited when I was shopping in downtown Murfreesboro (which is so cute). My friends and I wandered into a store on the square called Sugaree’s, which was filled with vintage-style clothing. I seriously wanted to buy the entire store. So rather than using Pinterest as my inspiration for the styles of each decade, I thought we should look to our fellow Bisons. I spent hours on a quiet, cloudy Sunday sitting in the back of Beaman Library looking through yearbooks from 1939 to 1989 to find fashion inspiration from the classes that came before us. Enjoy these photos, styles and tips on incorporating the best of each decade into your daily look. The Best of 1939 A sweet photo of a couple filled an entire page in the 1939 edition of Lipscomb’s yearbook, The Backlog. Although it is just the backs of the couple, it gives a great depiction of the styles of the time. The girl is dressed in a plaid blazer jacket with a white knee-length skirt. The boy is dressed in a white jacket and dress pants as they stroll across campus. They are simply walking around campus, and they are dressed very nicely, which looks cute and classy.   A...
