Less than 10 days after speaking at Lipscomb’s annual Imagine event, journalist Tom Brokaw has been accused of sexual harassment by two women — former Middle East correspondent Linda Vester, and another woman, who worked as a production assistant in the 1990s. Brokaw released a statement through NBC News concerning the allegations: “I met with Linda Vester on two occasions, both at her request, 23 years ago because she wanted advice with respect to her career at NBC. The meetings were brief, cordial and appropriate, and despite Linda’s allegations, I made no romantic overtures towards her at that time or any other.” University spokesperson Kim Chaudoin spoke on behalf of Lipscomb, stating, “We do not have first-hand knowledge of the allegations against Mr. Brokaw, and will not comment on them.” Vester told Variety and The Washington Post the harassment took place in NBC offices in Denver and New York in the 1990s. The longtime anchor of “Nightly News,” Brokaw reportedly made unwanted advances toward her on two separate occasions. Vester was in her 20s, and stated that the unwanted advances from Brokaw included a forcible attempt to kiss her. According to the Post, the other woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said Brokaw “acted inappropriately toward her in the ’90s, when she was a young production assistant and he was an anchor. Lipscomb received a university record-breaking donation for the second consecutive year, president Randy Lowry announced at the Imagine donor event Tuesday evening. “This is a significant moment in the history of Lipscomb University,” Lowry said in a statement. “We are grateful to these donors for their commitment to this institution. This gift is an investment in our College of Business as a way to continue to elevate the image of the school as a leader in business education in Nashville and in the nation.” The $23 million gift from an anonymous group of donors is going to the College of Business to build a new facility and parking structure. Some of the money will go to the study-abroad campus in Florence, Italy. College of Business dean Ray Eldridge said the gift would help the College build on its recent successes, which include the accounting program being named tops in Tennessee for back-to-back years by College Factual. “It is exciting for our students and faculty to see how many people believe in our mission, and it also attracts attention from others who want to be part of what we’re doing,” Eldridge said. “They’re investing into the students of tomorrow,” business major Hillary Reader said. “They may be the students who make the new Amazons, the new Googles, the new Apples of the world. Lumination’s Lindsey Nance will be moderating the SGA debate tonight at 7 p.m. in Zebi’s lounge. SGA will be providing food for everyone in attendance. SGA President Carson Panovec is a graduating senior, but he noted that the candidates running for offices this year are “stacked.” He said he thinks the election will be a close one, so he encouraged Lipscomb students to come out to the debate to be informed and learn about their candidates. “The debate is an important part of the election process because it gives everyone the opportunity to be exposed to the candidates,” Panovec said. “Who they are, what they are about, and their vision for Lipscomb. It helps people to be more informed when they step up to the ballot. “I’d encourage everyone to come out and either meet the candidates or support the one you are already behind. In the third day of Singarama shows, “Name and Address” took home the award for best “Blocking and Staging” at Saturday’s matinee performance. This is the first win for the performers of “Name and Address,” and their director, senior biology student, Vince Law. “We put a lot of work into the choreography and staging, so it’s a good boost to have going into tonight for sweepstakes,” Law said. The sweepstakes award is the overall award for performance with the best showmanship and audience appeal. The award will be given at the end of Saturday night’s show. Law saw the win as a confidence boost for the group that will propel them into the last performance. “It’s nice to have a confidence boost,” Law said. “It’s exciting to have a little victory.
