Eight students have been elected as Senators-at-Large, the Lipscomb Student Government Association announced Thursday afternoon. On Tuesday, Jack Webber defeated Jase George and Breckin Horton for SGA president. Senior Sierra Sparks served as SGA president this school year. “I could not have done it without the support of the student body,” Webber said. “I want to thank everyone who helped to give me this opportunity. I promise to make y’all proud.” Senators-at-Large: Butler Bowen Judson Chaudoin Jase George Breckin Horton Nate Messer Fiona O’Neal Erin Stanley Hank Warren Macy Glassco ran unopposed for vice president. This is the last edition of LU’s GQ this semester. I wish everyone all the best in their exams and hope everyone has a relaxing summer. Speaking of summer, are you sick and tired of sweat marks and feeling uncomfortable in the heat? Need to go to work and feel like you’re wearing a wet suit? Then worry no more, this is how to remain cool in the heat this season while still being fashionable. Shirt: Keep in mind that we are wanting to look stylish and separate from the pack of guys wearing graphic tees and frat tanks. If you read last week’s post on ‘What to Wear on a First Date?”, it explains the importance of a simple, classic and timeless tee shirt. Neutral colors are the best, however because of the heat, stick with lighter colors like white. Earth tone colors are also trending this year, so you might want to explore khaki, olive and tan. If you’re planning to spend the whole day at the beach and then go out during the night, it is a great idea to wear a button-up shirt. The great thing about shirts is that they can be dressed up or down, in the summer I love to wear either a white or light blue button-up with contrasting shorts. It is also important to keep in mind what material and fabrics you’re wearing. Lightweight and breathable material helps reduce sweat marks and also hides them as they can dry quickly. The famous Notre Dame Cathedral, home of Paris Archbishop Michel Aupetit, went up in flames on Monday. Residents and tourists watched in horror as their beloved and treasured monument burned. Several Lipscomb students, especially those who studied abroad in past years, have expressed their sorrow on social media. Veronika Jones, a junior who studied abroad in Florence in spring of 2018 saw the cathedral when she was abroad. “It was clear how proud the people of Paris were of the beauty and the history of the city,” Jones said. “I can’t even begin to imagine how this loss is impacting them.” Jones noted how busy the cathedral was, and how everyone visiting was in awe of the building. “I wish I could’ve gone inside while I was there,” she said. “I am happy I at least got to see it though.” Brianna Burch, who is also a junior, studied abroad in London in Fall of 2018. Burch is studying French at Lipscomb, and she said visiting the historic and sacred monument was awe-inspiring and humbling. “I didn’t know any French before coming to Lipscomb, but since then I’ve embraced French culture on a personal level,” Burch said. “So this tragedy was devastating to see. “Mon cœur se brise—my heart breaks for Paris.” The fire reported to have started in the scaffolding surrounding the spire. The cathedral had been undergoing renovations recently, particularly around the spire in general. The fire quickly got out of control, and soon after the roof and iconic spire collapsed. The Lipscomb baseball team beat the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders 12-10 Tuesday night in a nail-biting game at Dugan Field. Middle Tennessee (15-22, 9-6 C-USA) started the game with two runs in the top of the first, but the Bisons (19-17, 3-6 ASUN) quickly took the lead in the bottom of the second. David Graves tripled to right center, sending Josh Martinez to score. Brian Moore hit a home run afterward, sending Graves home and giving Lipscomb the edge to start third inning, 3-2. Lipscomb’s lead didn’t last long, as Middle Tennessee scored five runs in the top of the third. However, the Bisons lessened the gap to 7-5 as Graves hit a double in the bottom of the third inning, sending Cade Sorrells home, later followed by Chris Bashlor. The fourth and fifth innings were scoreless for the Bisons with Middle Tennessee scoring two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Bisons recovered and scored four runs at the bottom of the sixth, tying up the game 9-9. In the bottom of the seventh the Bisons took the lead 11-9 after three scoreless innings for Middle Tennessee. While the Blue Raiders tried to make a comeback at the top of the eighth with one run, they struck out, leaving Lipscomb the chance to score once more before the ninth inning. Lipscomb University invited donors of $1,000 or more annually to a night highlighting innovation on Monday. The fourth annual IMAGINE event featured special musical performers Dr. Wintley Phipps and Natalie Grant and guest speakers Mark Cleveland and Walter Isaacson. IMAGINE serves as a celebration of Lipscomb’s achievements and has also been the platform of several big announcements for the university, such as a $23 million donation at last year’s IMAGINE. This year’s focus was Lipscomb Leads, the $250 million fundraising campaign. Student body president Sierra Sparks shared with the guests the 200,000 hours of service students have pledged to contribute to the Lipscomb Leads campaign. After a performance by Phipps, Lipscomb alumnus and CEO of Hytch Mark Cleveland was welcomed to the stage. Lipscomb is a huge supporter of the rideshare app, and Cleveland shared with the donors his vision for the company and the innovative steps it’s taking. “We have a strategy to protect our cities by taking pressure off our infrastructure,” Cleveland said. “We are on a mission to reward people for reducing their carbon footprint every time they share a ride with Hytch.” Cleveland said that he wanted to be a part of the Lipscomb community because he wanted to join a group of problem-solvers. He joked about getting an A on his paper about Hytch, and he urged the audience to find their community of innovators. “On your daily commute the empty seat in your car is both a problem and an opportunity,” Cleveland said.
