Lipscomb graduate student is ‘Making Disciples’ with missions documentary

On Monday, April 17, 2017 at 7:00 p.m., a premier screening of “Hacer Discipulos” will be shown in Ezell Chapel. The film is the result of a collaborative partnership between Lipscomb Track Missions and Manna Global Ministries. The film’s producer is Katie Bianchini, who graduated in December of 2016 from both the Journalism New Media and Spanish programs. Bianchini is now in the Graduate Instructional Practice Program, working towards her goal of becoming a High School Spanish teacher. “Creating this documentary was a pairing of both of my majors in Spanish and Journalism,” she said. “It just made sense.” Bianchini grew up in Snohomish, Washington, and said that she always had an interest in learning Spanish. She came to Lipscomb as part of Track and Cross Country program, where she excelled and obtained numerous awards, including second and third place all-team conference awards, the ASUN Indoor Runner of the Week award and the mile at the Don DeNoon Invite with a time of 4:57.43. She also finished first in the 5000m at the Bellarmine Invite and the 1500m at the Joey Haines Invite in 2016. During her undergraduate years at Lipscomb, Bianchini participated in several missions programs, and traveled to the Dominican Republic with the track team four times. The film “Hacer Discipulos” was an idea born during an internship that was required to complete the Journalism program. Bianchini said that what started an idea for a short film about a mission trip ended up being extended into a full-length feature.“Originally, I just did it to fulfill the three-credit Journalism requirement, but now it has taken on a life of...
All-female cast delivers powerful retelling of ‘Richard II’

All-female cast delivers powerful retelling of ‘Richard II’

Whether you’re Shakespeare-obsessed or have no experience with iambic pentameter whatsoever, Sean Martin’s Richard II is the must-see show of this season. “As far as we know this will be the first production of Richard II ever to be staged in Nashville,” director Sean Martin said. “I also just think opportunities to see things like this are often rare outside of places like New York or London, and it would be an unfortunate thing to miss it.” Richard II is the story of a capricious king who makes arbitrary decisions until his own people welcome an invasion to change leadership. The production examines divine right, the responsibility of the commoners and the psychological weight of a crown. The iconic work is retold with an entirely female cast, mixed with Lipscomb theatre students and Nashville Shakespeare Festival (NSF) actors. Caroline Amos, a regular actress with the NSF, shines in the role of Richard II, her mastery of Shakespeare obvious from her crisp diction and breathtaking storytelling. Amos portrays Richard II honestly and powerfully, making him startlingly relatable. The audience can sympathize with Richard’s mistakes through Amos’ retelling, instead of writing him off as incompetent or weak. The dispute between Carrie Brewer’s role of Bolingbrook and Evelyn O’Neal Brush’s portrayal of Mowbray kickstarts the production, creating a conflict powerful enough to carry the whole show in its wake. Denice Hicks is the perfect choice for the Duke of York. Her wise warmth fills out the intensely loyal role, endearing her to the audience. Richard II also features Lipscomb professor and Chair of Theater Beki Baker as Northumberland, a role she portrays...

Sophomore impacts many with life-changing testimony

Sophomore impacts many with life-changing testimony

A perfectionist, a ballet dancer and a Type A personality, Lipscomb sophomore Arden Whitehurst has battled a life-controlling behavior for many years. A disease that could have wrecked her life is now in the rearview mirror as Whitehurst has transformed it into a ministry. From a very young age, Whitehurst struggled with people-pleasing and was crippled by the fear of letting people down. As she grew older, the anxiety from the expectations of others began manifesting and she heaped more responsibility on herself. High school trudged on and anger towards God took root as Whitehurst grasped for control of her life and identity. She had the weight of the world on her shoulders and began looking for an escape. The young dancer began an innocent diet to slim up and stay healthy, but what started out as harmless soon became a catalyst for harm. She quickly began a downward spiral that she could no longer control. “I slowly started restricting my food intake and I soon found myself in a dark hole and didn’t know how I got there or how to get out of it,” Whitehurst said. She was soon diagnosed with anorexia nervosa and severe anxiety. As weeks turned into months, the disease began bleeding into her everyday life. She was falling behind in school and in dance; her parents began desperately searching for answers. No one in her family knew what to do or how to help, so they sent Whitehurst to Renfrew Center in Dallas, Tex. where she finally began to accept the people who were trying to help her and slowly began to open up to their accountability and...

Bisons fend off Ole Miss to win Ryman Hospitality Intercollegiate

The first ever Ryman Hospitality Intercollegiate became a battle of two strong teams, but the Bisons used a strong finish to come out on top. The Lipscomb Men’s Golf team trailed Ole Miss by three shots with four holes to play but managed to make five late birdies to earn the victory. “Mental fortitude, that’s what’s great about this team,” Coach Will Brewer said after the tournament. “They are all passionate about competing. Ole Miss is a great team and their 1-2 punch is strong, but we put ourselves in a good position and finished really strong.” Blustery and firm conditions made the golf course very difficult and caused scores to be higher than anticipated. Swirling winds and lightning fast greens kept the players guessing for most of the tournament. “We played out here a couple weeks ago when it was soft and slow, so it surprised us to have to compete in much different conditions,” Brewer said. “Some of our guys weren’t happy about the scores they shot, but overall they handled the difficult conditions very well.” Dawson Armstrong and Stoney Crouch led the Bisons in the final round. Armstrong shot a solid round of 69 to grab second place in the tournament at 1-under part (72-71-69.) Meanwhile Crouch birdied three of his final five holes to shoot a 3-under 68 and finished the event at 1-over par (73-73-71.) Both Mikey Feher and Eric Ansett carded rounds of 74 in the final round. Ansett finished the event alone in fifth place at 3-over par (69-73-74), with Feher finishing one stroke behind in a tie for sixth at 4-over...
Carson Panovec elected as SGA President

Carson Panovec elected as SGA President

The student body elected Carson Panovec as SGA President after students voted Tuesday in Bennett Campus Center. As President of SGA, Panovec said he plans to focus on advocating for students and communicating with administration. “I would use SGA’s two most underused committees to: get ideas, feedback, and concerns from students, and increase communication and build relationships with the administration,” Panovec said. “This would allow SGA to take the thoughts and ideas of students to the administration to accomplish things that SGA couldn’t accomplish on its own.” Stephen Hemmerly was elected as Vice President. Tyler Dove ran unopposed as Treasurer and Sierra Sparks ran unopposed as Secretary. Senior Class Senators include: Brandon Cunningham, Brent Horswell, Matthew Jafari, Vince Law and Rebecca Robertson. Hannah Fox, Leslie Garcia, Emilee Goss, Myron Sailors and Hanyi Yin will serve as Junior Class Senators. Breckin Horton, Annie Moore and Jack Webber were elected as Sophomore Class Senators.
