The men’s and women’s cross-country teams finished their last weekend of competition with a pair of first-place finishes. Lipscomb bested 32 men’s teams and 33 women’s teams at the Arturo Barrios Invite hosted by Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. The teams also sent runners to the UAB Blazer Classic in Birmingham, Alabama where the men finished 5th and the women finished 10th. Freshman men’s runner Ben Butcher competed in Birmingham and was Lipscomb’s second-highest finisher, coming in 26th place with a time of 25:35:05. “The atmosphere is really positive right now.” Butcher said. “I think the past few weeks when we saw what the top guys at Texas A&M were capable of doing, we all thought ‘wow, we are legit and can compete with the top teams in the country and make a name for ourselves.’” Both Lipscomb teams seem to be trending in the right direction with the ASUN Championship next up. Along with the talent on both rosters, Butcher believes having a normal fall season has helped both teams as well. Last year, COVID-19 forced the season to be condensed and rescheduled for winter 2021. “There is a strong appreciation for having more normalcy.” Butcher said. “My teammates have talked about last year and how hard it was to have cross country and indoor track basically at the same time. This year having that space to focus on cross country, everyone has felt more relaxed and prepared for the season.” Normalcy and their recent success are two things the Bisons can take with them into the ASUN Championship. The team is carrying a lot of confidence...

Jack Ingold was just a normal freshman, focused fully on his studies, at Lipscomb University last year. But he knew that eventually, he wanted to earn a spot on the basketball team. He had the credentials, but the time wasn’t right. Standing 6 feet 3 inches tall, the Charleston, West Virginia-born guard has known since the fifth grade that Lipscomb is where he wanted to play basketball, and he was a dominant high school player. But he took last year off the hardwood, focusing on school while staying in basketball shape. All the while, he hoped for an opportunity to join the men’s team this year. “I got here as a freshman, and I emailed coach (Lennie) Acuff and told him a little bit about myself and what I wanted out of this,” said Ingold. “I told him if he’d crack the door for me I’d kick it in, and he gave me the opportunity, so I’m here,” said Ingold. Teammate and good friend Tanner Shulman said he’s impressed with Inngold and loves having him around the team. “He moved into the dorms with us (this past summer) and his energy from day one was just awesome,” said Shulman. “Jack is always in the best mood…. It’s just nice to have him around. “He’s doing everything we do, and he’s working his tail off,” Shulman said. “You can already see his body has changed, and he’s gotten to be so much better already.” Acuff said he is impressed with Ingold. “He’s been great, he’s an awesome kid,” Acuff said “He’s a good player. He does everything we...

The Bisons women’s soccer team won the ASUN West Division with a 3-0 victory over the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears. “[It feels] really good,” head coach Kevin O’Brien said on the valuable win. “I mean, that’s obviously what you work for all year long. You train in the summer and then you show up and have preseason and you put in time and time and time in the non-conference to try to get ready and go on a run and thankfully these girls have shown up in the ASUN season.” “Going into the conference championship playing well, I thought we created lots of good chances and defended well also, and that’s all a head coach can ask for.” The Bisons took on the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears for the first time this season. This served as the deciding game for the host of the west bracket of the ASUN Conference tournament as well as Lipscomb women’s soccer senior night. The team recognized midfielder Kristi Jones from Lynn Haven, Florida majoring in Biology and forward Kammy McGee from Collierville, Tennessee. Both have taken the field over 50 times in 4 years as well as being a part of the back to back ASUN championships which led to two NCAA playoff berths and the program’s first NCAA tournament win. In the first half the Bisons kicked off to start the game. Lipscomb pushed up into the box but good defence by the Sugar bears prevented any shots by the Bisons. Kristi Jones got the first shot off on Keyla Perez. A Lipscomb foul led to a free kick by the Sugar...

The Lipscomb Academy varsity football team beat Christ Preparatory Academy 38-0 at the Lipscomb Academy Football Stadium Friday night. Both teams came in with perfect district records and only one loss each on their resume. The one team to beat both sides going in was Oakland, the top-ranked team in the state of Tennessee across all divisions. On a night with 16 penalties for 179 yards, 9 of which went against the Mustangs for 119 yards, the game was hard-fought but never particularly competitive. Lipscomb won the offensive yardage battle by a whopping 472 to 156 yards. 250 of those yards came in the air for the Mustangs, supplemented by 222 yards rushing. The top two teams in the Division II-AA Middle District met in a rematch of last year’s Division II state championship game, and this time around, it was the Mustangs who got the better of the Lions after CPA won the state title in 2020. Lipscomb also came into the game with 10 consecutive wins at home over the course of two seasons, accruing 4 shutouts during that period. Looking to stop that streak, the Lions received the opening kickoff and immediately struggled to build offensive momentum. An early punt on their first drive was followed up by another punt, and a 75-yard touchdown to tie the game was wiped off the board for an offensive penalty. To make matters worse, the visitors lost a fumble on their final drive of the first quarter. In a continuing narrative from the entire season as well as last year, senior running back Alex Broome dominated the CPA defense...

The 52nd Gospel Music Association Dove Awards returned to Lipscomb’s Allen Arena Tuesday night in celebration of a Christian music community that is “stronger together.” After a yearlong hiatus of the in-person ceremony due to COVID-19, the energy of the crowd made one thing clear — everyone was glad to be back. Nominee Kelly Nelon Clark spoke of the feeling of being together again in her red-carpet interview: “We’re so thrilled; I want to hug everybody!” Lipscomb University President Candice McQueen kicked off the show by offering a welcome to campus, which was followed by a stunning performance from We The Kingdom featuring some African musical inspirations. Hosts Natalie Grant and Jonathan McReynolds began their duties with a video skit about the pitfalls of zoom meetings before coming together on the stage to officially open the show. The first award of the evening for Contemporary Gospel Album of the Year went to Koryn Hawthorne for her record “I Am.” Next up were performances from gospel legend CeCe Winans, Tasha Layton and popular new group CAIN. “A Week Away,” directed by Roman White, took home the award for Inspirational Film of the Year, followed by the award for Gospel Artist of the Year which was presented to CeCe Winans for the 24th Dove Award win of her long career. “I feel so encouraged,” Winans said backstage, “and it reminds us that the word of God is always relevant.” Co-host Jonathan McReynolds took to the stage with Mali for a performance of their songs “Best Thing” and “Jump Ship,” and later GMA sweetheart Lauren Daigle returned to the Dove Awards stage...

When Lipscomb hosted the 2021 Dove Awards this past Tuesday, excitement buzzed throughout campus. Students eagerly watched from the Bell Tower or the back steps of Swang just to get a glimpse at a possible celebrity. Even a few guests sat out and watched from afar before they got to see the Dove Awards for themselves a couple of hours later. A group of three, Jenny, Blake, and Hannah, came all the way from Alabama, visiting the Dove Awards for at least the fourth year now. Many students were excited at the thought to see celebrities as they gathered around Allen Arena to get a glimpse of the event coming up. Students came together to talk about their favorite songs, bands, and more, creating an exciting atmosphere around Allen Arena that started off the award show. Not only did the students have fun watching from outside, but a select few were able to participate in the event by serving wherever help was needed. Student-workers were a seemingly small group of people, but an immensely crucial part to the Dove Awards experience for the guests. One student worker, Mackenzie McConnell, was handing out brochures for the event in the halls of Allen Arena. She said she loved the ambiance of it all and was excited for the chance to see that celebrities were people, too. McConnell has been working for the Events Management Office since the beginning of the summer and said she even got to meet Michael W. Smith when she worked at a concert. Her favorite song by Michael W. Smith is his rendition of “Awesome God”. I...
