Saturday afternoon, the Lipscomb Bisons fell to the Kennesaw State Owls 15-2 who bounced back after falling in extra innings Friday night. Unlike game one, Kennesaw left very few runners stranded, scoring 15 runs off of 17 hits and 3 walks. Meanwhile, the Bisons had a quiet night totaling only five hits against the ace Torbert, who pitched seven innings before being relieved by senior pitcher Anthony Rodriguez, who pitched two scoreless innings. Lipscomb’s only scoring came in the fourth inning off of singles by junior outfielder Maddux Houghton and sophomore catcher Chaz Bertolani bringing home freshman infielder Tiger Borom and junior designated hitter Chris Bashlor. Kennesaw State, on the other hand, had five players with multiple hits, and nine Owls scored in the game. A suspect was brought into custody and charged with murder a day after the March 16 Atlanta-area shootings that left eight massage parlor/spa workers dead. Six of the dead were Asian American women. Lipscomb’s Office of Student Life issued a statement via Instagram, offering support to the Asian American community amid an uptick in hate crimes nationally. “We see you. We hear you. We care for you. You belong,” read the statement that finished with the hashtag #stopasianhate. Anti-Asian attacks have been on the rise since the beginning of the pandemic, and many of them have resulted in physical violence, particularly against older members of that community in big-city Chinatowns like in New York and San Francisco. The forum Stop AAPI Hate reports nearly 3,800 reported incidents of discrimination (AAPI stands for Asian American and Pacific Islander). Racial bias surrounding the origin of the COVID virus has been blamed as the primary reason for the uptick in hate crimes against Asian Americans. n for this uptick, most reported incidents consisted of verbal harassment and name-calling. The motive of the Atlanta shooter is under evaluation by local officials and the FBI. In the March 19 editions of The Washington Post newspaper, reporter Andrea Salcedo wrote that in February of 2020, just when the pandemic was beginning its still mortal attack on the world, the World Health Organization urged that terms like “Wuhan virus” or the “China virus” be avoided. They said continued use of those terms could spike antagonism and attacks against Asians. “President Donald Trump didn’t take the advice. On March 16, 2020, he first tweeted the phrase ‘Chinese virus,’ ”...

After falling behind early, late-inning magic propelled the Bisons to a win in their first ASUN conference game in two years against the Kennesaw State Owls. Coming into the Friday afternoon matchup the Owls’ starting pitcher graduate transfer Jake Rice had worked 22 runless innings while holding his opponents to a 0.100 batting average. Rice lived up to his reputation by retiring the first ten Bisons that came to the plate. Meanwhile, Lipscomb’s starting pitcher freshman Ike Buxton held Kennesaw State to one run through as the first four innings, escaping a number of tight situations leaving eight Owls stranded. The fifth inning finally opened up the scoring for both teams, as the Bisons and the Owls both added three runs to their total. For Lipscomb, their three returning second-year seniors, infielders Haddon Adams and Brian Moore and outfielder David Graves, all scored for the Bisons, breaking Rice’s scoreless streak. The Bisons kept the scoring going in the sixth inning with a two-run homer from junior Maddux Houghton that also brought home senior infielder Carter Smith and gave the Bisons their first lead of the afternoon. Lipscomb held this lead until the top of the eighth when sophomore infielder Jesse Sherrill singled to score senior infielder Jake Coro and tie the game. Sophomore closer Tyler Guilfoil came in to end the eighth inning and worked three and a third innings while not allowing any more runs for the Owls to get his second win of the season. But the Bisons themselves could not find an answer for Kennesaw’s ace closer, Jared Rine, until a walk in the eleventh put...

The Lipscomb men’s soccer team took down non-conference opponents Central Arkansas by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon. The midweek matchup pitted the Bisons against future Atlantic Sun rivals in the UCA Bears, who also played a fall season in the Sun Belt Conference this year. Despite the fact that this match didn’t count in conference play for either team, both sides wanted the win and fought hard to earn a positive result. It was the home side who would take the initial advantage, though, when Trinidad and Tobago native Tyrece Spicer tucked a shot into the near post, beating the keeper in the 7th minute. Spicer, a freshman left-winger, scored his third goal of the season to put Lipscomb ahead 1-0. In a statistically rare moment, goalkeeper Michael Sibley picked up the assist. It’s the sophomore keeper’s first–and likely only–assist this season. Lipscomb dominated possession of the ball and controlled the midfield from then on, but couldn’t find the net on their other six shot attempts of the half. The Bears capitalized on the opportunities Lipscomb left behind when they scored an equalizer on the stroke of halftime. Substitute Masood Porsa scored against the run of play in a quick series of passes that left the Lipscomb backline undone, leveling the score at 1-1 after the first 45 minutes. The Bisons continued the narrative of controlling the game early on in the second half, but in the 59th minute, it looked as though Central Arkansas was going to nab another fortunate goal. Junior defender Louis Robinson bundled over his opponent inside the penalty box on a cross...

After bad weather moved their game from Auburn to Nashville, Lipscomb played host and lost to the Auburn Tigers 9-7. The Tigers got on the board first with a solo home run from junior infielder Tyler Miller in the second inning, but the Bisons quickly responded with a scoring run in the bottom of the inning bringing home four batters and taking a 4-1 lead. Auburn didn’t lose the lead for long as they bounced back in the top of the third with a solo home run from junior outfielder and another home run from Miller that brought home three batters, and retook the lead for the Tigers 5-4. A pitching change for the Bisons quieted the Tigers in the 4th inning, but the scoring started again in the fifth inning and extended their lead to 9-4. Senior designated hitter Chris Bashlor and junior outfielder Maddux Houghton added two home runs for the Bisons bringing the score to 9-7. Back to back 1-2-3 innings for Lipscomb in the eighth and ninth innings for pitchers junior Tyler Drabick and sophomore Tyler Guilfoil put the Bisons in position to tie the game. The Bisons put both sophomore catcher Chaz Bertolani and junior infielder Malik Williams on base, but left both runners stranded, which ended the game. With the loss, Lipscomb falls to 5-6 as they prepare to open ASUN conference play at home this weekend against Kennesaw State in a three game series. The Tigers improve to 11-5 and will take on #4 Ole Miss this weekend for their conference opener. Continue to follow Lumination Network for all your Lipscomb Sports...

Washington, D.C., lawmakers are scuffling over solutions to student debt and the rising cost of higher education, and any resultant policies will hit home for Lipscomb students who take out more than $11 million in student loans each school year. Lipscomb’s financial aid office is awaiting changes on the federal level and advocating on behalf of students, according to school officials. Tiffany Summers, financial aid director, and Amanda Martin, director of the Office of Neighborhood, Community and Government Relations, are working within college associations to obtain information surrounding upcoming policy changes. “I would say there’s a lot that we’re watching right now, certainly higher education was an important part of the administration’s platform,” Martin said. “There can definitely be a difference between what is on the platform and what actually gets done when somebody gets in office,” she said. Platform issues are basically “pie-in-the-sky” campaign proposals that are altered by legislative reality. One of the hot-button issues surrounding Biden’s higher ed plan is student debt forgiveness. Opponents argue forgiveness would disproportionately benefit high-income individuals, while supporters maintain Biden could do more. “There’s definitely a lot of debate nationally around student loan debt. …So one of the pillars of Biden’s higher education plan was that he wanted to forgive $10,000 worth of student loan debt for everyone,” Summers said. “It’s certainly unclear what any actual student loan action is going to look like, there are some that argue Biden should by executive order forgive $50,000 in student debt for everyone or forgive all student loan debt which would cost somewhere around $1.5 trillion,” she said. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) and Sen....
