Lipscomb women’s soccer drops home match against Alabama

Lipscomb women’s soccer drops home match against Alabama

On Sunday afternoon Lipscomb women’s soccer hosted the Alabama Crimson Tide for a non-conference matchup. After a quiet 90 minutes of regulation, the Tide prevailed with a golden goal victory, 1-0, in the 93rd minute. Combined in regulation Lipscomb and Alabama combined for a total of four shots on goal with the Bisons holding the advantage 3-1. Junior midfielder Kelli Beiler, who has been off to a hot start for the Bisons since transferring in from Penn State, had the Bisons’ best opportunity off of a corner kick by junior midfielder Emily Patti, but a masterful save by junior goalkeeper McKinley Crone kept the game scoreless. Alabama started off overtime with two quick shots on goal. Lipscomb senior goalkeeper Melissa Gray picked up her second save of the afternoon against freshman midfielder Kate Henderson, but less than two minutes later sophomore midfielder Reyna Reyes scored off of an assist from sophomore defender Bella Scaturro. The Lady Bisons fall to 3-2 on the season and are set to host Liberty and put their perfect conference record on the line Thursday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. Lipscomb softball sweeps Loyola Chicago, splits with Oakland in Purple and Gold Challenge

Lipscomb softball sweeps Loyola Chicago, splits with Oakland in Purple and Gold Challenge

During the early part of the season, Lipscomb softball often travels to various invites in other states and doesn’t play as many home games as they do during the conference slate. But this weekend, the Lady Bisons hosted two teams from the Midwest for an invite held at Draper Diamond. Lipscomb got the better of the weekend, going 4-1 with a sweep of Loyola Chicago and a split with Oakland (Mich.). The Ramblers swept Oakland, while Oakland went 1-3. The Lady Bisons are 9-7, while Loyola drops to 2-9. Oakland is 1-3. Lipscomb opened the weekend with a two-game series Friday. Sophmore Kyndall Crawford led the way with 3 RBIs as the Lady Bisons beat Loyola 5-0. Graduate pitcher Maddie Siemer (2-0) notched the win in a 7-inning game where she struck out six and only allowed two hits. The Lady Bisons capped off Friday night with a 9-4 decision over Oakland before falling to the same squad the following day, 4-2. In the Saturday cap, neither Lipscomb nor Loyola scored until the final sequence of a game that went all the way into the 10th inning. Shortstop Madison Ebeling hit a double that sent Abbey Jacobsen home to give Loyola a 1-0 lead, but Lipscomb scored two runs in the bottom of the tenth. The game-winner came from a double by junior third baseman Olivia Ward, which sent sophomore Presley Leebrick home. Lipscomb capped off the weekend with a 9-1 win over Loyola on Sunday. Both teams were tied at one heading into the bottom of the sixth before Lipscomb run-ruled Loyola with eight in the bottom of...
COVID cancels six baseball games

COVID cancels six baseball games

Due to COVID-19 safe play policies, Lipscomb’s baseball team announced the cancellation of six games on their schedule. The games include a midweek matchup at Austin Peay that was scheduled to be played on Tuesday, March 2nd; a four-game weekend series versus Kansas that was scheduled to be played Friday, March 5th – Monday, March 8th; and a midweek matchup against Belmont on Wednesday, March 10th. This is the second year in a row that the home series against Kansas has been canceled due to COVID. Softball’s Battle of the Boulevard matchup on the 10th is still scheduled to be played. As of now, the Bisons are on track to travel to Georgia for a three-game series against the Bulldogs and to Auburn for a midweek matchup against the Tigers before returning home to host Kennesaw State in their ASUN opener. No. 3 Lipscomb falls to No. 6 FGCU in the first round of ASUN tournament

No. 3 Lipscomb falls to No. 6 FGCU in the first round of ASUN tournament

Coming into the ASUN tournament with at least one win against every other ASUN opponent, except North Alabama, Lipscomb was projected to go deep into the tournament and even have a chance to win it all and earn a spot in the 2021 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. But the inconsistencies that have plagued the Bisons all season long got the best of them in game one of the tournament to end their season early after the 72-60 loss to the Eagles. Early in the game, it was Lipscomb who had taken control of the matchup, going on a 21-2 run to take a 17 point lead. This effort was headed up by sophomore guard KJ Johnson who finished the afternoon with 18 points.  However, the Eagles would not stay silent for long and went on two runs of their own to cut down on the Bisons lead. Going into the halftime break, Lipscomb led by only four.  Sophomore guard Jake Wolfe would score a basket early in the second half before the Bisons went on a nearly 10 minute scoring drought, which gave FGCU the lead.  Even though the Bisons finally were able to put points on the board in the last quarter of the game, it did nothing to stop the Eagles from staying on their scoring rampage. With just a few minutes to go in the second half, FGCU lead Lipscomb by 23 points with a 70-47 lead.  Lipscomb would go on a 13-2 run to end the game, but by this point it was too little, too late for the Bisons, whose unexpected loss cost them...
ASUN tournament preview: Lipscomb once again holds the No. 3 seed

ASUN tournament preview: Lipscomb once again holds the No. 3 seed

On March 3, 2020, the No. 3-seeded Lipscomb men’s basketball team beat No. 6 FGCU 68-63 off a 40-point effort from center Ahsan Asadullah. The game was played in Nashville less than 24 hours after a devastating tornado struck Middle Tennessee. So many things have changed since then, and I don’t even think I have to tell you what all of them are. But this year’s edition of the ASUN men’s basketball tournament will be single-city (as will the women’s), with teams participating on the campuses of Jacksonville University and North Florida, both located in Jacksonville. Much like last season, the Bisons (15-11, 9-6 ASUN) once again hold the three seed, with the Eagles (9-7, 4-5 ASUN) taking up the No. 6 spot. Neither team has played a full 16-game conference slate, although FGCU’s cancellation-littered schedule is more notable. The game is scheduled for Thursday night at 6 p.m. CT, to be played in Swisher Gymnasium at JU. Disappointment is really the first thing that comes to mind for how the Bisons’ season went. They were picked to win their conference (which could still happen in the tournament) but now sit behind Liberty and Division I newcomer Bellarmine. Inconsistent play and the inability to hold large leads have created headaches for this squad all season long. Redshirt junior Ahsan Asadullah is once again the leading scorer at 14.2 points per game, but he had a slow start to the season before putting up bigger numbers late. Grad transfer Romeao Ferguson adds 13.6 points per game at the shooting guard position, and sophomore guard KJ Johnson is the lone other...
Lipscomb improves to 7-1 in ASUN play with sweep over UNA

Lipscomb improves to 7-1 in ASUN play with sweep over UNA

Four straight sweeps, a combined score of 22-4 in set victories against ASUN opponents and a stacked roster with talented players across all academic classifications. That’s the story this season for the Lady Bisons, highlighted by a 3-0 blanketing over North Alabama in Allen Arena on Wednesday night. Lipscomb is now 10-2 on the season and 7-1 in conference play, while UNA drops to 1-8 (1-7 ASUN). Senior Megan Kuper led the way for the Bisons with 14 kills in Allen Arena, while four Lions tied at the team lead with four. Lipscomb set the tone early with a 4-0 lead in the first set and was aided by runs of 7-0, 4-0 and 5-0 to take the first installment 25-10. It seemed like UNA was unable to put up a fight, but the Lions caused trouble for the Bisons in the second set, taking an 8-4 lead off a bad set from Lipscomb freshman Delaney Smith. A 5-0 run from Lipscomb gave the Bisons the lead before both teams settled on trading leads. While ahead 14-13, Lipscomb ran away with a 6-0 run, capped by a Kuper kill. Lipscomb won the second set 25-17. UNA led the final set 8-2 before Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal called a timeout. Lipscomb broke away with a 12-0 run after that and ended up outscoring the Lions 23-5 after the early deficit, winning the final segment 25-13.
