In their 2021 home opener, the Lipscomb Bisons baseball team fell to Creighton 11-4, as the Blue Jays scored four home runs. Debuting their brand new cream uniforms, the Bisons came into the afternoon with a 2-1 record after beating Murray State twice on Monday and falling to Memphis on Tuesday afternoon in Hoover, AL. Junior pitcher Noah Thompson got his first start for the Bisons in nearly two years after missing the shortened 2020 campaign with a foot injury. In his three innings of work, Thompson allowed four hits and five runs off of a sacrifice fly and two home runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Meanwhile, the Bisons could get nothing going offensively as it was nine batters up and nine batters out in the first three innings behind expert pitching from sophomore pitcher Dylan Tebrake. In the fourth inning, the Bisons tried to close the scoring gap behind an offensive surge from senior outfielder Carter Smith and junior infielder Malik Williams that brought three runs home for Lipscomb, bringing the score to 5-3 in favor of the Blue Jays. However, this two-run deficit would be as close as the Bisons would get for the rest of the afternoon. Several Bisons pitchers came in in relief, but none could manage to stop the bleeding as Creighton continued to add on runs in the sixth, eighth, and ninth innings. Lipscomb opened the afternoon with a 9-1 victory that ended in the 6th inning due to run rules but fell to the Panthers 3-1 Wednesday afternoon in their 2021 home opener. Even though the Lady Bisons walked away with a game 1 victory, it was the Northern Iowa Panthers who got the first Draper Diamond run of the year as redshirt senior shortstop Sammey Bunch led off the top of the first inning with a home run. But it didn’t take Lipscomb long to even the score as sophomore catcher Kamrie Rich countered with a home run of her own in Lipscomb’s side of the first inning that also brought home senior outfielder Caitlin Turner. From there the Lady Bisons controlled the scoring and did not allow another Panther run while also dominating the offense, scoring eight unanswered runs. Rich ended the game with three hits, two runs, and six runs batted in. Graduate transfer pitcher Breanna Burke got the win for Lipscomb pitching all six innings. In the second game of the afternoon, Rich continued her scoring streak in the first inning bringing home junior infielder Amy Vetula and giving the Lady Bisons a 1-0 lead. In a flipped script from game one, it was Lipscomb who would go cold offensively not scoring another run. Meanwhile, Bunch also continued her scoring in game two of the action adding another home run to her tally for the afternoon bringing home herself and sophomore infielder Kamryn Shaffer for the go-ahead run and the win. After having their weekend series postponed, Lipscomb Volleyball was finally able to play their second conference opponent of the season, the UNA Lions, in the first game of their two-game series, where Lipscomb won 3-0. Due to delaying these games, the second game of the series will be played in Florence, AL Tuesday night. Lipscomb started and finished hot Monday night winning both the first and third sets by commanding margins of 12 and 13 points, however, in the second set, the Lions kept it close falling only by 3 points, 22-25. The Bisons are now 3-0 in conference play after sweeping Liberty on the road two weekends ago and 6-1 overall. The Bisons currently sit in second place in the ASUN behind Kennesaw State, who is 6-0 in conference play this season. Leading the way for the Bisons in kills were outside hitters freshman Kamryn Bacus with 15 and senior Megan Kuper with 13, and assisting them were freshman setters Brooke Phillips with 22 and Delaney Dilfer with 17. For the Lions, freshman Kamryn Parsonage led UNA in kills with 7. Lipscomb hopes to stay on their hot streak as their busy schedule continues. This week alone the Bisons still play three more games finishing off this first two-game series with North Alabama and then another two-game series against Bellarmine at home before returning to Florence next week for the second two-game series against the Lions. For the second time this season, Lipscomb men’s basketball has swept a conference opponent. Much like Friday night, the Bisons used a strong second-half performance to take down ASUN bottomfeeder Kennesaw State 77-63 in Allen Arena. Lipscomb is 15-10 and 9-5 in the ASUN and sitting at third place, while Kennesaw State has already clinched the No. 9 seed and will participate in a play-in game in the ASUN tourney. Four Bisons dialed in double-figure nights, with graduate transfer Romeao Ferguson leading the herd with 24. Sophomore guard KJ Johnson scored 20, freshman guard Will Pruitt had 18 (a career-high), and redshirt-junior center Ahsan Asadullah posted 12. Pruitt’s performance was most notable. A local 6-3 guard out of Mount Juliet, Pruitt was making his second consecutive start and just his third overall this season. Don’t be surprised if the Bisons keep him there, as he cashed in on the opportunity by going 6-of-7 and 5-of-6 from range while leading the team with seven rebounds. The Owls’ top two scorers this season were their top two scorers Saturday night. Leading scorer and junior guard Spencer Rodgers led the way with 21, and second-leading scorer and freshman guard Chris Youngblood followed suit with 12. Nobody else cashed in double digit points. Offensively, Lipscomb played a dismal first half. Lipscomb led 12-6 with 15:50 left in the first half before giving up a 14-2 run that lasted for over nine minutes. After starting their 2020 season with the best 6-0 start in the program’s division one history, COVID-19 brought the promising season to an abrupt halt just 16 games in. Now one year later, after so much anticipation for a Friday season debut, winter weather has further extended the unusually long offseason. Despite the delays, Lipscomb has retained the majority of their roster as well as adding a few new key additions, and the hopes of an ASUN championship are just as high. “I feel like our team is better talent-wise, but so is every other team in the country,” said head coach Jeff Forehand. “Everybody is playing with five classes and a shortened Major League Baseball draft and shortened number of rounds, so there are a lot of players playing college baseball that should be playing professional baseball now. Also, the addition of some older transfer guys is obviously going to make our team better, but the same type of guys have transferred to other teams as well. So college baseball across the board is going to be so much better and so much more improved. For us and our team, we are excited of where we are right now and just looking forward to getting back out there as soon as this snow melts off.” For the Bisons, it all starts and ends with preseason ASUN player of the year senior infielder Haddon Adams. Coming off of a weekend split against Jacksonville last weekend, the Bisons sat at 7-5 coming into their last home weekend seeking a win in the first game of the series against Kennesaw State. The Bisons won, 76-62. Kennesaw coming in with their first conference win of the season the previous weekend against Stetson was looking to keep their momentum against Lipscomb. The first half was an even duel for both teams with nearly identical stat lines through the first 20 minutes of play. In the first half, Asadullah hit solid from the field and the free-throw line. A healthy performance from Jake Wolfe and Mr. Consistent, Romeo Ferguson helped the Bisons in the first half. However, it was Kennesaw who was up at the half 35-36. Backed by solid play from #3, Youngblood, with 12 points that matched Asadullah’s first-half mark. 11 first-half turnovers are what kept the game as close as it was. After the halftime break, Lipscomb came back out re-energized and looking fired-up. With a pristine night’s finish for Asadullah (23 points) and continual effort from Johnson, Ferguson, and Wolfe — the Bisons finished the game out handily, 76-62. Lipscomb finished the game seeing 4 players score in double figures — Johnson (16), Ferguson (13), Wolfe (12), Asadullah (23).
