Lipscomb University was set to plan their home opener game against Campbellsville Harrodsburg tonight at 7 pm. The university released information regarding capacity and new COVID-19 regulations at home games earlier this week, but the first game has since been canceled. Due to a COVID-19-related issue within the Campbellsville program, the game was canceled. The teams will not make up the game. The Bisons will now open their season on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Lamar in the Tulane Classic. They will then play Tulane at 1 p.m. on Sunday on ESPN+....

Even though positive COVID-19 numbers on Lipscomb’s campus have risen in recent weeks, Lipscomb athletic director Philip Hutcheson remains positive about how Lipscomb athletics has managed the pandemic this fall. “I think the semester has gone really well considering where we are at,” said Hutcheson. “The NCAA made some decisions athletically in terms of how we were going to have to deal with this.” While much of Lipscomb athletics’ success with the COVID pandemic is due to the vigilance of the staff, coaches, and players, some pressing concerns were alleviated by some of the NCAA’s decisions. “We weren’t sure starting out if we were going to have fall sports or not, and then they [the NCAA] decided not to have fall sports,” said Hutcheson. “That took care of a lot of the questions we had about logistics and how to handle events and crowds and that sort of thing.” Fall sports may have been canceled, but practices and preparations for the spring continue, and so adjustments have had to be made to reduce the spread of the virus. “We’re still trying to deal with distancing, cleaning things a lot more often, or using different routing for how we come in and out of places,” said Hutcheson. “One of the things that’s different for athletes compared to the rest of the student body is we do a lot of testing of our athletes. Depending on the sport they play, they’re classified as either a high contact sport, medium contact, low contact. So basketball, for instance, is a high contact sport. The Atlantic Sun Conference is doing its best to limit travel and COVID exposure with a new basketball schedule that will keep each school’s 16 conference games, but put weekend series between teams at only one school’s basketball arena. This means that two ASUN teams will play each other twice in the span of one weekend. The teams will also be given a day to rest up in between the games. In the past, each team would have played one of the games at home. One of the main goals of this setup is to reduce travel by the two teams. It’s another example of an effort to further keep teams from spreading COVID-19 by limiting the distance traveled. ASUN men’s basketball starts on New Year’s Eve and will end on Feb. 27. Women’s basketball will begin on New Year’s Day and will come to a close on Feb. 28. Lipscomb’s men’s team will have home series with Liberty (Dec. 31/Jan. 2), FGCU (Jan. 21/23), Kennesaw State (Feb. 4/6) and North Florida (Feb. 18/20). The away series for the men’s will be Bellarmine (Jan. 7/9), Stetson (Jan. 28/30), Jacksonville (Feb. 11/13) and North Alabama (Feb. 25/27). The Lady Bisons will play the same schools but on different dates and at different locations. The home games for the Lady Bison are Bellarmine (Jan. 8/10), Stetson (Jan. 29/31), Jacksonville (Feb. 12/14) and North Alabama (Feb. 26/28). After nearly a decade of defeat at the hands of the Christ Presbyterian Academy Lions, the Lipscomb Academy Mustangs edged out their rivals to take the regional championship. In response to the win, Mustang Head Coach Trent Dilfer spoke highly of his team following the game but emphasized that the season was far from over. “I’m proud of our guys tonight..it’s obviously a very big win for our school…but in that same breath, this is only 48 minutes of the 672 we want to play this year.” The low scoring affair began just before 9:00 PM due to the intense rain in the Nashville area this Friday. 14 of the Mustang’s 20 points came within the first quarter. Lipscomb Academy star Running Back, Alex Broome, returned the opening kickoff to give the Mustangs an early 7-0 lead. Lightning delays have begun at the LA v. CPA game. The Lipscomb Academy Mustangs took the field Friday night against the Franklin Road Academy Panthers in what was only the third game of the year for the Panthers. Overall, the Mustangs defeated the Panthers in a 61-0 win. Coach Dilfer was very proud of his team for the win and how they’ve dealt with this unusual season. “I’m proud of them, I’m proud of their week of preparation, I’m proud of how they are handling the chaos in the world around them, and I’m proud of them buying in, every single day, to getting better.” The Mustangs came charging out of the gate with an emphasis on the run game and a touchdown on the first drive from Quarterback Luther Richesson. A forced fumble from Senior Zach Larkin lead to great field position and allowed Lipscomb to run in their second touchdown of the night for the early 13-0 lead. The Panthers seemed rattled after the first two drives and running back Jeffery Vercher was forced to take some time off the field with what appeared to be a tweaked ankle. With Vercher off the field, FRA opened up the passing game which resulted in an interception return for a touchdown by Safety Jaden Lyles of Lipscomb Academy. Despite Vercher returning, Lipscomb Academy continued to find the end zone. The Mustang defense wreaked havoc and provided great field position throughout the first half. Lipscomb Academy football finally returned Friday night, but the weather and the outcome didn’t go as the Mustangs had desired. The visiting Mustangs fell to Brentwood Academy 29-19. Three minutes into the game, Mother Nature paid a little visit to Brentwood, resulting in a 30-minute lightning delay. Once given the all-clear, both sides were hoping for calmer weather for the remainder of the night, but once again lightning struck. After two lightning delays and an hour-and-a-half of waiting, the game resumed. Brentwood Academy drew first blood on a 23-yard touchdown run. Both sides were silent for the remainder of the half. With little action and a lot of punting on both sides, Brentwood Academy went into halftime with only a 7-3 lead. When the second half began and the rain cleared, both sides were able to focus more on their passing game. The Eagles struck once again early in the second with a four-yard touchdown run to increase the lead to 14-3. A couple of minutes later, a bad snap got away from Mustang quarterback Luther Richesson deep into the Eagles’ endzone, resulting in a safety. Later in the third quarter, a 59-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tyler Monteil increased the Eagles’ lead to 22-3. Once the fourth quarter got underway, the Eagles saw their lead slowly begin to slip away, but the Mustang comeback was too little, too late.
