It’s a little like High School Musical. Thursday night, Lipscomb men’s basketball takes on Texas in the NIT championship at Madison Square Garden (MSG) in New York City. But back on campus in Nashville, students are also gearing up for opening night of Singarama, a song-and-dance competition that’s been going on for decades. A large chunk of Lipscomb students participate in Singarama, especially those in Greek Life. And while some students are taking advantage of the bus Lipscomb sponsored to MSG, students who are in Singarama are preparing for opening night of the anticipated show. Luke Shoulders (second from left in featured photo) is possibly one of Lipscomb basketball’s biggest fans. He’s been dedicated to dressing out and cheering on the Bisons all season. But he’s also heavily involved in Singarama and has a main role in this year’s show, playing “Dad (Jim Foster)” in the “Wonder Years” show, so he won’t be making the biggest trip of the season to watch Lipscomb play in the championship. “I love the Lipscomb student experience,” Shoulders said. “I believe in joy and excitement in abundance where people are gathered. Both basketball and Singarama give me that experience. I get the excitement of cheering on a sport that I’ve grown to love in basketball, and I get to perform with people I love in Singarama. Basketball and Singarama are two of the most significant experiences that I will remember in college for the rest of my life.” Singarama opens on Thursday night and has a show on Friday evening and two shows on Saturday. Lipscomb’s Office of Student Life hosted an NIT watch party in the Bison Cafe center Tuesday to allow students, faculty and alumni to gather together for the Lipscomb-Wichita State semifinal showdown on ESPN. At least 250 faithful Lipscomb supporters turned out for the party. The Bisons beat the Shockers 71-64 to advance to the NIT championship game, where they will face the Texas Longhorns Thursday at 6 p.m. CT. Lipscomb had about 400 supporters on the ground in New York, but the rest of the fans were in Bennett Campus Center or watching at home. The first half of the game went smoothly and the noise from the Bisons fans grew as the team quickly gained a lead and finished the half leading 35-30. The crowd initially had around 150 fans, but it continued to grow around halftime. The fans spent halftime enjoying popcorn, raffles, snacks and dinner in the Lipscomb cafeteria while chatting about the fate of their beloved Bisons. Going into the second half, the crowd had grown to around 250 people and the chatter of the fans grew with the size. The Bison fans were on the edge of their seats for the majority of the second half watching as the team played out of rhythm for the first portion of the second half. The Shockers gained a 61-50 lead with six minutes left, and Lipscomb fans began to draw weary. But a clutch three from senior Nathan Moran brought the crowd back to life. NEW YORK CITY – Things looked bleak for the Lipscomb men’s basketball team with 3:46 left in Tuesday’s NIT semifinal game at Madison Square Garden. Wichita State appeared to be in control, but the Bisons had a final surprise for the Shockers. Powered by senior leader Garrison Mathews, Lipscomb closed the game on a 14-0 run to steal a 71-64 victory and advance to the NIT title game. The Bisons will battle Texas for the championship Thursday at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN and on Lumination Radio. “It says a lot about our program and the current state of it,” Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander said. “We’ve got some guys with three straight 20-win seasons and an NCAA Tournament last year, and three road wins in the NIT before we came here, so they have accomplished a lot.” Mathews led all scorers with 34 points, but he had to earn every bucket. The Shockers’ defense paid close attention to him and tried to deny the ASUN Player of the Year on the perimeter. But the Franklin native still managed to make five of his fifteen three-point attempts and 11 of his 12 free throws. He scored Lipscomb’s final seven points, including a go-ahead three with 1:10 remaining. “I went cold there for a little while, so it was good to finally knock one down for my team and help them kind of get over the hump,” he said.
