The NFL Draft is being held in Nashville this week for the first time ever. An estimated crowd of over 200,000 people attended the first round of the draft on Thursday. The NFL has taken over almost every inch of downtown. The main stage where the picks are announced is on lower Broadway, but the NFL is also holding a free festival across the Cumberland river in the parking lot of Nissan Stadium, called the NFL Draft Experience. The festival has photo opportunities with NFL memorabilia and trophies, chances to meet NFL players and free tours of the Titans locker room. On Thursday, the “NFL Draft Experience” had Titans players Marcus Mariota, Derrick Henry and Corey Davis along with several other NFL players. The full list of player appearances for Friday and Saturday’s festival can be found on the Fan Mobile Pass app. Attendees for the festival will need to download the Fan Mobile Pass app to be able to get access to many things. Nashville has become the epicenter for many national media outlets this week including ESPN and the NFL Network. ESPN’s popular show “College Gameday” broadcasted Thursday night from Broadway. Once the draft started on lower Broadway, the Arizona Cardinals selected Kyler Murray as the first overall selection. The hometown Titans picked later in the draft and selected Jeffery Simmons. It’s been a busy two days for Lipscomb basketball. Yesterday, Lipscomb welcomed Lauren Sumski as the new head coach for women’s basketball. And today, Lipscomb introduced Lennie Acuff as the new head coach for men’s basketball. Acuff is the winningest coach in the history of the Gulf South Conference, amassing 437 wins over 22 seasons at the University of Alabama-Huntsville. He has a total of 550 wins in 29 seasons. Acuff said he believes that encouraging those around him is crucial. “The most powerful thing you can say to someone is ‘I believe in you,’” Acuff said. Sumski is the former D-III coach at Rhodes College. She said she plans to “reset” the program, rather than “rebuild” it. “This is just a reset,” Sumski said. “This isn’t a rebuild. The charges against Lipscomb employee Alex Ross stemming from a March 10 incident at a Nashville bar have been dropped. Ross, Lipscomb’s assistant director of athletics operations, was charged with public intoxication and resisting arrest in the early morning hours of March 10 at the Tin Roof Bar on Demonbreun Street, according a Metro Nashville Police affidavit obtained by Lumination. Both charges were dropped by judge Michael Mondelli at the Davidson County Criminal Court Friday. Lipscomb Vice President of Public Relations Kim Chaudoin did not have an update on Ross’ employment status as of Friday afternoon. He is still listed as an employee on the school’s website. Following the initial arrest, Chaudoin issued a statement saying that Ross had been placed on leave while the university conducted an internal investigation. “Alex Ross is Assistant Director of Operations in the athletics department, which means his primary job duties are to provide lawn maintenance for the grounds and fields, facilities maintenance and setting up equipment for games. “He has been placed on leave pending an investigation. It is our policy for appropriate university officials to conduct an internal investigation and follow through as is consistent with internal policies. As this is an active case, we cannot comment on details of the incident,” Chaudoin said. According to the police affidavit, Ross was kicked out of the bar but refused to leave after security attempted to escort him out. Metro Nashville police officers also asked Ross to leave the premises, but he continued to refuse. Lipscomb’s Office of Student Life hosted an NIT watch party in the Bison Cafe center Tuesday to allow students, faculty and alumni to gather together for the Lipscomb-Wichita State semifinal showdown on ESPN. At least 250 faithful Lipscomb supporters turned out for the party. The Bisons beat the Shockers 71-64 to advance to the NIT championship game, where they will face the Texas Longhorns Thursday at 6 p.m. CT. Lipscomb had about 400 supporters on the ground in New York, but the rest of the fans were in Bennett Campus Center or watching at home. The first half of the game went smoothly and the noise from the Bisons fans grew as the team quickly gained a lead and finished the half leading 35-30. The crowd initially had around 150 fans, but it continued to grow around halftime. The fans spent halftime enjoying popcorn, raffles, snacks and dinner in the Lipscomb cafeteria while chatting about the fate of their beloved Bisons. Going into the second half, the crowd had grown to around 250 people and the chatter of the fans grew with the size. The Bison fans were on the edge of their seats for the majority of the second half watching as the team played out of rhythm for the first portion of the second half. The Shockers gained a 61-50 lead with six minutes left, and Lipscomb fans began to draw weary. But a clutch three from senior Nathan Moran brought the crowd back to life. With Nashville’s weather being as unpredictable as *insert typical Southern phrase here*, Berry Hill’s Juice Bar is a welcome sanctuary of healthy choices for all eaters. Juice Bar, located only two miles from campus, offers more than just refreshing, vitamin-filled juices. With various food choices, like spring rolls and sandwiches, smoothies/smoothie bowls, and even shots (don’t worry–they’re non-alcoholic), Juice Bar is a local hero for everyone who wants to be healthy and/or stay that way. One of my personal favorite menu choices at Juice Bar is the dragonfruit smoothie bowl. First off, the color of the smoothie bowl is a stunning deep pink, which I think only enhances the whole eating experience. The bowl tastes bright and spunky, with its sweet mango complimented by the zingy dragonfruit, all topped off with honey, bananas and strawberries. If you’re gluten-free, make sure to ask for no granola—maybe they’ll be nice and sub cacao nibs or another gluten-free treat for you instead. Another favorite for me is the Pad Thai Noodle Bowl. The noodles are made from sweet potatoes, which provide a light yet sturdy texture that works well as noodles. The sauce is sweet and perfectly seasoned, with seeds and cashews on top, making it a protein-rich, gluten-free meal. If you are feeling under the weather, but you’re still not quite brave enough to try one of Juice Bar’s Power Shots, like the Ginger & Cayenne shot, go for the Sweet Greens juice.
