It’s been a rough season so far for the Lipscomb’s women’s basketball team as its twelve-loss streak continued with a 68-53 loss against North Florida Tuesday night. The Lady Bisons (2-13) faced off against their ASUN rival North Florida (6-7) at Allen Arena with hopes to move forward from their losing streak. That hope was defeated as Lipscomb left the court with another loss. On Tuesday, the Lady Bisons’ trouble was stopping turnovers from the Ospreys. By the end of the game, Lipscomb suffered a high 21 turnovers, and in the first two quarters a low field goal percentage. The Bisons just couldn’t seem to shoot or keep the ball well in the first half of the game. The Lady Bisons had major trouble penetrating through North Florida’s defense and was mainly only successful in their free throws for the night. Lipscomb is in the top five in the ASUN for free throw percentage, and for most of the night that percentage was at 100%. Lipscomb’s junior starting guard Carleigh Short took the first shot of the night — a three-pointer that put some numbers on the board early for Lipscomb. By the end of the game, Short left the court with a total of seven three’s for the night. That wasn’t enough though, and by the end of the third quarter, UNF had a 22-point lead. The Lipscomb Lady Bisons opened their season with a nail-biting 64-62 win against Tennessee State Friday in Allen Arena. For the Lady Bisons, who lost a significant number of seniors last year, it was a matter of getting a young roster composed. Lauren Rau, a starting guard for Lipscomb, made the game-winning layup for the Lady Bisons. Rau said the veterans of the team struggled early on and thought the freshman came up huge for them tonight. “We were able to have the freshman exposed to something like this, the first game or the season,” Rau said. “We just needed them to play together.” It was neck-and-neck for the majority of the game. At the end of the first quarter, Lipscomb was down just two points to the Tigers. The Bisons cut the lead to one at the start of the third, but made a run to take a five-point lead at the buzzer. It seemed that Lipscomb’s lead would hold through the last five minutes of play. But in the final stretch, TSU picked up momentum thanks to some Lady Bison turnovers, cutting the score to 53-52. Coach Greg Brown said the biggest challenge would be tightening up his team’s ball handling. “We need to figure out a way not to turn the ball over as many times as we did,” Brown said. “But still pulling out a win and not taking care of the ball is a testament in just finding a way to win it.” With less than two minutes on the clock, TSU found themselves down by only two. Lipscomb (8-4-2, 3-1 ASUN) faced a slew of unexpected challenges as they faced new ASUN opponent Liberty (3-9, 2-2 ASUN) at home on Sunday, losing 2-1 after an extra time period. Coach Kevin O’Brien felt the two teams were evenly matched, and said he expected the game to be more of a challenge on his team. He felt that they did not show their true skill set in the first half, but brought a more even play in the second. “We had watched them in film and we knew they were good. So I was expecting a good game, and that is ultimately what we got,” Coach O’Brien said. “It was two pretty evenly matched teams going toe-to-toe.” Things began smoothly as Lipscomb junior Leah Cernicky shot a goal in the first ten minutes of play off of a free kick. The Bisons led against the Flames in shots on goal. Then an own goal in the half assisted by Liberty’s #9, Madison Ellis, tied the game in the 38th minute. In an even second half, Lipscomb had quite a few close opportunities at goal, but Liberty’s goalie Melody Jayroe kept the Flames in the game. The half ended in a tie, leading the two teams into extra time. Liberty picked up the pace in overtime, and with a minute left the Flames’ Gabrielle Farrell scored to make the score 2-1. Fall is in full swing as Lipscomb’s department of Fashion and Design continued their second event of the 2018 Fall Fashion Series. Evening wear designer, Kevan Hall, presented some of his Spring designs and spoke about his career in the fashion industry. The event was hosted at Cheekwood Botanical Gardens by Gus Mayer and Style Blueprint. The event was free to any student willing to pre-register. The show offered free food and drinks, and advice from Hall who has dressed many famous icons on the red carpet. Hall described his early beginnings in the industry. He explained he wanted to be a designer since he was 7 years old. He worked until he was eventually able to create his own Kevan Hall Collection, and in the process has designed for Michelle Obama, Vanessa Williams and Katherine Heigl. Established in 1997, the Caroline J. Cross Chair of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences funded the event. The chair was created to “provide enrichment opportunities to students in this field.” Caroline Cross, the founder of the chair, said she wished that they could do a better job at reaching the community. She wants these events to reach out to not only students at Lipscomb but other students and anyone interested in fashion as well. “This is the first time we’ve done this,” Cross said, adding, “but I just wish something could be done about their advertisement.” She noted that she was happy to see that Style Blueprint, an online fashion publication, was there to help host the event, and she wants more light brought to the continued series. The Lipscomb volleyball team kicked its ASUN slate Tuesday against North Alabama, which recently joined the conference. The Lady Bisons (6-7) ended the night with a 3-0 victory over the Lions (2-8) at Allen Arena. It was North Alabama’s fifth-consecutive loss. Lipscomb also came into the opener with a three-match losing streak of their own. Despite their unfamiliarity with the Lions, the Lady Bisons quickly handled their new opponent. “They are new to the conference so we weren’t sure what to expect,” Lipscomb junior Morgan Elmore said. “But we just came out excited to start the conference season, so I think we started focused and aggressive.” Elmore started at setter for the Bisons and ended the game with 44 assists. Morgan said the team goes into each conference game wanting to make a statement, but that took on extra meaning against North Alabama. “We knew they would be out to prove something since they are new to the conference, and we have built a reputation that makes people want to beat us,” Elmore said. “It’s always good to start the conference on a win, so that made it great for us moving forward to build momentum.” The Lady Bisons breezed through the first set and beat North Alabama 25-11. After the Bisons set a fast pace in the first set, UNA came out ready to bring that same aggression in the next set.
