Wintermester, a compressed three-week term offered between the end of the fall semester and the beginning of the spring semester, has been canceled this year. Wintermester started in 2012 and has since become a great way for students to catch up or to get ahead on studies. While Lipscomb changes its data management system, evaluations are being done to the condensed semester, all to make sure it’s best for both the students and the school. By canceling the winter semester this year, some students will be delaying their graduation dates by an entire semester. “If there were wintermester classes still offered, I would be taking over the amount that allows me to use my scholarship,” said junior Makena Sneed, “meaning I would be using nearly a full semester of the leftover gen-ed classes that I have. So it’s going to push my graduation date back a semester.” Faculty and staff are trying to work with students who may have to graduate late. “There may be some students who were planning on taking Wintermester courses to try to get ahead or get those last few credits before graduation,” Chaudoin said. “Academic advisors are aware of this and are going to be working with students very proactively to make sure they have other options available.” “As we were looking at the number of students that have participated [in Wintermester], it’s very small, and it is a lot to squeeze into that three-week period of time…even though I know there were some awesome classes offered,” said Kim Chaudoin, assistant vice president for public relations and communication. There is no word if wintermester will...

American musician Shawn Amos once said, “Memphis is the place where rock was born and Martin Luther King, Jr., was killed. It’s full of contradictions, abject poverty, and riches that only music can provide.” Lipscomb’s Office of Intercultural Development and Law, Justice, and Society program invited students to Memphis over fall break to witness this city’s unique dichotomy. Students first visited Beale Street, named by CNN Travel as one of the most iconic streets in America. These three blocks in the heart of downtown Memphis gave students a glimpse into the place where blues, jazz, and rock ‘n’ roll were founded. “As a music lover, I felt like I could feel my roots on Beale Street. It was heavily influenced by the past and that’s where most of today’s music comes from. Memphis is soul and you could feel it when you walked those streets,” senior Noah Kimbrough said. But, the ultimate purpose of the trip was to give students tangible insight into the struggles, sacrifices, and successes of the Civil Rights era and the people who gave the movement life. The National Civil Rights museum stands in conjunction to the Lorraine Motel, the balcony where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and killed. Each exhibit within shows a different aspect of African American history, from transatlantic slavery of the early 1600s to the beginning of the Obama Administration in 2012. With a recent 200 million dollar update, the museum uses modern technology, live exhibits, artifacts, and film to give students an immersive look at Civil Rights. Lipscomb junior Eden Melles said that “the trip gave her a...

The men’s soccer team fell 4-3 to NJIT Saturday night in a nail-biting, back-and-forth game. The first goal of the night was by Lipscomb freshman Honore Kalala. This was Kalala’s first career goal and marked the beginning of a suspense-filled night. With 50 minutes remaining in the game, the Bisons (3-8-1, 1-3 ASUN) led 2-1. However, this marked the calm before the storm . NJIT scored back-to-back goals in less than 30 seconds by Diego Ferreira and Rene White. During the 85th minute, Lipscomb tied the game with a long-distance set-up from senior Austin Eager to sophomore Louis Robinson. Two minutes later, the tie turned into a loss for Lipscomb as NJIT player Joao Costa scored the game-winning play. Lipscomb will play North Florida next Saturday at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. It will be the last home game before the ASUN Championships. Photo Gallery by Riley Hoag...

The Lady Bison secured another conference win as they beat the Stetson Hatters 2-0 at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. The game started off in favor of Lipscomb as there won three straight corner kicks the Lady Bison. This would be a good indicator of how the first half would go as the Lady Bison outshot the Hatters eight to two. Both teams would have glimpsed in front of the goal before the end of the first half. The second half was no different. The Lady Bison would have an array of chances offensively, putting up nine shots to the Hatters five. Then in the 69th minute, Lipscomb finally broke through and scored on a great solo run from Macy Douglas that was set up by a pass from Molly Grant. Douglas, who is a freshman, has really come into her own in the past couple of games as she scored her third goal of the season. Grant, who is fourth on the team in terms of assists, got her third assist of the season. After the first goal of the game, Stetson didn’t back down as they had a number of changes in the Lipscomb half. The Hatters had a couple of shots that yielded some opportunities for a goal, but nothing would come of them. Then, they had a corner kick that was deflected and then cleared away. This set up a scoring chance from Lipscomb that would ultimately be saved by Stetson goalie Lara Bates. However, after a bad clearance from the Hatters, Lipscomb capitalized on a cross in the 86th minute from Hailey Eck to Maycie McKay to...

The annual crime report for the 2018 year was released this month by Lipscomb’s Office of Security and Safety. The report shows that there was one reported rape on campus last year and that the criminal activity of burglary in on-campus housing had increased from one report in 2017 to five reports in 2018. The one reported rape on campus is alleged to have occurred in September 2018. The accused is former Lipscomb sophomore, Sam Salib. Salib was indicted by a grand jury in August on three counts of rape. (https://www.scoopnashville.com/2019/08/grand-jury-indicts-lipscomb-student-sam-salib-in-2018-rape-case/?fbclid=IwAR2YkwWQ_6BqE8oY12FLtgdVn0bocJK4HgJoUA0wssciJh_-ev2UyKBe02I) The report reported that there were no rapes on campus for 2017 and two for 2016. “I feel safe on campus if security is there to protect me,” senior Bailie Fite said. “When I’m by myself, though, I feel like I’m on my own and if I report something, I feel like they’re (campus security) not going to do anything about it.” In response to students who feel unsafe, Assistant Vice President of Public Relations and Communications Kim Chaudoin said, “Lipscomb Security and Safety has personnel on campus 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. If any student feels alone or in need of assistance, they only need to call 615-966-7600 to access one of our officers to assist them any time of the day or night.” Fite also said that she feels unsafe at night in parking lots on campus because in her opinion they are poorly lit. Chaudoin responded: “Lipscomb Security and Safety offers a Bison Walk service for anyone who feels unsafe or would like to have someone accompany them to or from their car,...

The 90 degree days seem to be coming to an end here in Nashville, but with a few 80 degree days still in the forecast, it’s not quite time to fully transition to a fall wardrobe of boots and jeans. I love fall styles, but with the hot weather, it’s not the easiest to wear them comfortably right now. Therefore, here are a few ideas for how to incorporate your summer pieces into fall looks. Combine your t-shirt dresses with a part of ankle boots or a fall scarf. I have an Old Navy orange t-shirt dress that I absolutely love. While a plain dress might be good and light for summer, it could look too plain for fall. I have a thin rope belt that I love to pair it with to add a little flair to the look, and tan ankle boots will heighten the look even more. Adding a fun pair of earrings will enhance the fall look, even more, all while keeping you cool on the warm days still ahead. I am a huge fan of jean skirts, and while I think that they are great for all year round, I especially love them in the fall. I recently got a red floral blouse at Loft. It’s super cute with buttons up the back and tucked into my favorite dark wash jean skirt, it’s the perfect fall look! If it’s too warm for boots, continue to wear your sandals! I have so many pairs of fun jeans that I love, and I can’t wait to wear them! I also have a white and brown kimono...
