In their own words: SGA 2019-2020 candidates share their visions for Lipscomb

This year’s SGA elections will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16 for executive office positions and class senators. The election for senators-at-large will be Thursday, April 18. Students will receive a link to their ballot via email tomorrow morning. The candidates for secretary are Mimi Vance and Hank Warren. Chloe Allen, candidate for treasurer, is running unopposed. Lumination’s Carly Reams spoke with each presidential and vice presidential candidate to hear their visions for Lipscomb in the future with SGA.         Presidential Candidates: JACK WEBBER Why are you running for president? I would say there are two basic reasons. I feel like I have a heart for Lipscomb, and there is a reason and a why behind the things I do. When I came to Lipscomb, I was filling out transfer applications and you can just say, I didn’t want to be here. I had planned for a long time to go to Pepperdine. Due to financial circumstances, I ended up at Lipscomb. It’s not that Lipscomb is a bad school by any means, I had just grown up and toured these places and seen my friends go there. They were just my dream schools, but I stayed here because I freaking love not Lipscomb University and all the rules, but the people and the students and many of the teachers. That’s why I do what I do. It’s why I try and make these changes, and I run for SGA. I do this on my own time because I have a heart for Lipscomb. I have a drive for Lipscomb; I...
Lipscomb’s Kenny Cooper puts name in transfer portal

Lipscomb’s Kenny Cooper puts name in transfer portal

Things have gone from bad to worse for the Lipscomb men’s basketball team. After losing coach Casey Alexander to Belmont last week, junior guard Kenny Cooper announced that he’s putting his name in the NCAA transfer portal. “I have decided through a lot of thought and prayer that I will be putting my name on the transfer list and [will explore] other institutions,” he said in a tweet Monday. “Everyone [is] entitled to their own opinion, but this is what I feel is best for me.” Cooper averaged 9.8 points, 4.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game this season. He has been the team’s starting point guard for the last two seasons after contributing 6.9 points per game as a freshman in 2016-17. “I want to thank Coach Alexander, Coach Idstrom, Coach Drabyn and Coach Rutigliano for believing in me and allowing me to play at Lipscomb University,” Cooper said. “You all trusting in my abilities is something that I will be forever grateful for.” The Franklin Road Academy graduate saved some of his best performances for the end of the season. He recorded a rare triple-double (15 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists) against Kennesaw State in the ASUN quarterfinals and later hit the game-winning shot in a 94-93 victory over NC State in the NIT quarterfinals. Cooper has one season of eligibility remaining, and he told 247Sports analyst Evan Daniels that he plans to appeal to the NCAA for a hardship waiver to be eligible immediately. If Cooper isn’t granted a waiver, he would have to sit out next season if he stays on the Division I level....
The Lady Bisons beat North Alabama in 13-2 win to seal the weekend series

The Lady Bisons beat North Alabama in 13-2 win to seal the weekend series

The Lady Bisons closed out a 2-1 series win against North Alabama this weekend at Draper Diamond, scoring nine runs with three home runs to win the final game in five innings. The Bisons (29-13-1, 8-4) won the first game on Saturday 4-1 thanks to a home run from Hannah Devault in the bottom of the third inning and a two-out two-run double from Peyton Ward at the bottom of the fourth inning. Saturday ended in a split doubleheader when North Alabama (18-16, 4-8) clinched the second game 5-4, pulling ahead in the sixth inning on a bases-loaded error, sending North Alabama in for a go-ahead run. The Bisons kept pace with the Lions scoring back-to-back doubles in the second inning and tying up the game 2-2 in the third inning. In the fifth inning, the teams traded two-run outings, tying up the game 4-4 but ultimately fell short at the end. Head softball coach Ryman said she felt the win didn’t fully show the potential of the team despite the big hit from Devault and the win from Pitcher Mandy Jordan. “We did have some clutch moments,” Ryman said. “We just never really strung it all together to capitalize on a bigger inning.  “We’ll go back to work this game, but at the end of the day it’s still a good conference win, and I thought Mandy gutted it out and found a way to finish it off for us.” Going into the second game on Saturday, Ryman said the team needed to be more intentional about supporting the strong at-bats and playing more cohesively. “We just need...
Kate Mason goes from soccer to accounting and back again

Kate Mason goes from soccer to accounting and back again

Not many people switch out of a stable job to pursue a career in something far less stable. Yet, that Lipscomb women’s soccer senior goalkeeper Kate Mason, a double major in accounting and finance, did this year. Mason had already accepted a full-time accounting position at a public accounting firm before she got an offer to play for Telge United FF, a Swedish professional soccer club. “When this came up, I knew it was something I couldn’t turn down,” Mason said. “Luckily the firm was very understanding of that and made it known that if I want to come back, there will be a spot for me.” At Lipscomb, the 5-foot-10, brown-haired goalie recorded more than 100 saves and allowed just 43 goals in her 42 career games. She posted shutouts in three of her final five games, including a 1-0 victory over Mississippi State in the first round of the NCAA tournament last November. It was the support system around Mason that made her decision to play professional soccer in Europe easier. She said her coaches, teammates and friends at Lipscomb had major influence on the trajectory of her life and playing career. “This was a place that was really special to me and I had grew so much, not only as a soccer player but off the field too,” Mason said. “It was so awesome to be in a place where I was encouraged to play for something bigger than myself and use this platform to share the gospel.” A player of Mason’s caliber does not go unnoticed in the recruiting process. She could have gone to...

LU’s GQ: what to wear on a first date

I have no idea what to wear! What can I wear to impress them? I don’t have anything! If these thoughts have come into your head when preparing to go on a first date, then fear no more. I am here to help! First dates can be nerve-wrecking, and it is crucial to make a long lasting and good first impression. This list is tailored for all men and is so simple and economical for all students.     T-Shirt: Let’s start off with the T-shirt. Simple, classic and timeless. When in doubt, there is nothing wrong with throwing on a plain T-shirt with a pair of jeans and nice shoes. Neutral colors are the best — stick with your black, whites and greys. Earth tone colors are also trending this season so you might want to explore khaki, olive and tan.       Button-up Shirt: The classic button-up shirt is the next level up from a T-shirt. It classes it up a bit and makes it more formal. Shirts are a people pleaser, especially if it is a nice one. This is definitely a piece of clothing that needs to be invested in — to wear on dates, casual outings and business meetings. Everyone needs a nice shirt that can be dressed up or down. Jacket: Depending on the weather, you may or may not need a jacket. But it’s always cool and handy to have one, especially living in an area with unpredictable weather. Pictured is me wearing a denim jacket over a grey sweater with black jeans. Denim, leather or bomber jackets are the three...
DC’s latest film ‘Shazam’ captures essence of youth

DC’s latest film ‘Shazam’ captures essence of youth

Childhood is one of the most memorable times in our life — a time where dreams of becoming princesses, astronauts and cowboys are never questioned — when being a superhero was as easy as climbing up the top of the stairs with a blanket tied to your neck, jumping as far as you can, until being defeated by the ultimate super villain. Gravity. Shazam takes those memories, along with action, humor and childhood antics and then wraps it up all in one for a great time for everyone. Zachary Levi (Shazam) was a dark horse for the role of the Great Wizard once the movie was announced in 2017, but his performance captures the warmness and wit that makes Shazam such a great character in all of comic books. Billy Batson (Asher Angel) has been in the foster care system since he was a young child, and he’s only had one person to look out for — himself. That changes when a family takes in the rebellious teen. While reluctantly adjusting to life with a family, he encounters the Great Wizard, Shazam, who champions Batson and bestows his powers to him when Batson says one word, SHAZAM! The highlight of the film is the accuracy of how it would be should a 14-year-old boy actually be granted super powers. The child in everyone relates to Billy with his decisions while being the Great Champion. Again, Levi does an amazing job of harnessing the joy and newness of youth. Angel also gives a wonderful performance as the rebellious teenager creating a sense of understanding from the audience. Originality of Shazam’s...
