Mortal Engines has several attractive qualities at the forefront. But these qualities can’t pull it through as a whole, even though the possibilities were high. It’s directed by Christian Rivers, protege of Peter Jackson, who also serves as writer for the film. It’s a movie adaptation of the worldwide best seller of the same name, adding the aspect of having a “cult” following. A world war caused a massive geological upheaval, centuries before the current story, that forces cities to become mobile so that they may escape dangers such as earthquakes and volcanoes. The movie begins with Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar) present on a city that is being chased by the Londoner mobile city. Once the smaller city is captured by the Londoner, Hester’s motive for being on the city ship is clear. Her goal becomes more difficult when obstacles appear that take her on a much deeper quest. One of the best aspects of the film is the visuals, yet even these have room for improvement. For those unfamiliar with the book and who only see the trailer will notice the gigantic mobile cities. However, there is only a handful of these that you see in the movie, which also begs the questions, where did all of the cities go? Did the Londoner capture all of the other cities? The movie never answers these questions nor gives light to any other mobile city. Lipscomb awarded over 400 diplomas at its 2018 December commencement in Allen Arena on Saturday afternoon. Three of these degrees awarded were to students completing the online degree program for the first time in university history. President Randy Lowry gave the charge to the students, offering his perspective on how the graduates are leaving armed with new knowledge and experience, as “products” of the university. “You came four or five or six years ago as a consumer, having looked, perhaps all over Nashville…maybe all over the country, for the college that you would call home,” Lowry said. “…The reality is you had many choices as a consumer, but something caught your attention about this community. One of the amazing things that has happened, perhaps not as profound as you will someday appreciate it, is that you came as a consumer, but you leave as our product.” Lipscomb now offers online degree programs in business leadership, psychology, RN-to-BSN and integrated studies, performance coaching and more. 171 students received bachelor’s degrees and 274 received graduate and doctoral degrees, with both August and December graduates. This includes 44 doctorates and 21 education specialist degrees, which is the most the university has ever awarded. Lowry added that his goal is to continually seek to increase the value of the students’ degrees. “Our job is very, very simple,” Lowry said. “Our job is to stay here and do this generation after generation and to increase the value of your degree…so that as you go forth, people know Lipscomb. Let’s all take a moment and acknowledge how much this one hurt to watch. Lipscomb’s men’s basketball team (7-3) took an exciting road trip to face a tough ACC squad in Louisville (7-3) and lost an excruciating nail-biter, 72-68, on Wednesday night. The Bisons proved that they have the talent to compete with the majority of schools in college basketball. They were just too sloppy to get it done. “[Louisville’s] one of the nation’s best,” Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander said following the loss. “[Louisville coach] Chris [Mack] has done an amazing job with them up to this point. I’m glad we came in here and fought.” And it might have played out differently had Bisons junior guard Kenny Cooper collected an open defensive rebound and then avoided a turnover — all within the last 66 seconds. But let’s get justifiably optimistic here. The fact that the Bisons stayed as competitive as they did against an ACC powerhouse just might be the final straw in proving that this year’s team is the most legitimate Lipscomb men’s basketball program since the NAIA days. “We beat a really, really, really good team tonight,” Mack said. “And our team knew that coming in. All you have to do is look at last year with them being in the tournament, playing Carolina tooth-and-nail, bringing back virtually their entire team.” But it was a sloppy, sloppy game for the Bisons. LOUISVILLE, Ky. – When Jordan Nwora scored Louisville’s first 11 points on Tuesday, it appeared it might be a long night for the Lipscomb men’s basketball team. But after making some defensive adjustments, the Bisons gave the Cardinals all they could handle in what was nearly a massive upset. However, a Kenny Cooper turnover with 1:03 left was followed by a fadeaway jumper from Louisville’s Christen Cunningham, giving the Cardinals a narrow, 72-68 victory at the KFC Yum! Center. Lipscomb guard Garrison Mathews led the Bisons with 20 points after producing a combined 10 in his last two outings against Belmont and Navy. The senior said he hopes the Louisville experience will help prepare the Bisons for March basketball. “I think we can play with anybody,” Mathews said. “I don’t think we can beat everybody, but I think we can play with anybody and give everybody a game. It’s good experience for hopefully when we make the [NCAA] tournament.” Lipscomb (7-3) shot just 35 percent (23-of-65) from the floor – well below its season average of 47 percent. But the Bisons went on an 8-0 run just before the break to cut Louisville’s halftime lead to 34-33. “It wasn’t our best performance by any stretch,” Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander said. “Louisville had a lot to do with that, obviously. Global learning has confirmed that the Chile study abroad program will be ending, with a new study abroad location in Costa Rica taking its place. The Chile program began in January 2014, and students studying abroad in Spring 2019 will be the last group to participate in this program. Part of the reason for the location switch is because the program director and his family will be moving back to the United States from Chile. “There are a number of reasons for us to move back to the US,” program director Zane Perkins said. “The main one is family. It is time for us to be closer to family (our parents) and because of Naomi (Aug. ’18) and Isaac (Aug. ’19) starting college we wanted to be close. Also, it is time for our kids to be closer to their family and get to know them. Aging parents also made us consider being closer to them.” Due to the change, Global Learning worked to find another program location in Latin America. “When Global Learning found out that he (Perkins) would no longer be able to direct the Santiago program, our office took the opportunity to reevaluate the Santiago program and investigate other location options within Latin America,” said Bethany Grant, Global Learning program manager. “We found that Costa Rica offers a wealth of opportunities, and it is actually the top destination in Latin America for US students studying abroad.” Starting in the Fall of 2019, Lipscomb students will get the opportunity to study in Costa Rica. Okay, reading this title, you might be a little confused. Let me explain. With it being the holiday season, I wanted to do something a bit different to get everyone into the inspired, happy mood that this time of year brings. So, instead of talking about what to wear for Christmas Eve service or how to stay warm this winter, I want to talk about our real clothing: the traits that we are dressed in and that we display to others. I have a sign hanging in my dorm room that I found at TJ Maxx (really, though, that’s like the only place I shop) that says “Kindness is always fashionable.” It got me thinking, so I decided to do an article based around it. There are multiple verses throughout the Bible that discuss the Godly traits that we have each been given. Additionally, there are some wonderful songs that calm me and remind me exactly who I am – who God has made me. He is the ultimate Designer, and He has styled us each to be perfect. So take these things, think about them and look back at them every time you start to forget who made you and who He designed you to be. Colossians 3:12: “Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” He has created you to have these traits. It is not the designer handbags or expensive dresses that we need to focus on to look attractive but rather these characteristics.
