Bisons men take down Flames in ASUN soccer quarterfinal matchup

After the Lady Bisons fell in the earlier quarterfinal matchup, the Liberty Flames were looking to clean house in Nashville with another game against Lipscomb; this time the men’s team. But this time around the Bisons had the advantage, winning 2-0 to advance to the ASUN semifinals.  The Bisons are now 2-0-1 against Liberty in this season after they tied with Liberty at home and won on a golden goal from Jake Zec in Lynchburg, both in the regular season.  These two teams have plenty of history across all sports in the playoff realm and this game would be no different with fouls coming on both sides and both teams doing whatever they could to get ahead.  In the first half, the Bisons and Flames managed to be as good of defensive teams as they were offensively, neither of them conceding a goal. The second half however would not be so kind for the Flames. In the 56th minute, Hayes Wood headed in the go-ahead goal from Scott Gulden on a free-kick from outside 22 yards. With a yellow card coming for the Flames only 6 seconds after this goal the game was heating up on the field. With continued scoreless minutes going by for the Flames, the Bisons jumped on an opportune corner kick which brought one Gulden brother from the corner to a header from his twin that set up an assist in the box for Honore Kalala for the added insurance and a 2-0 lead. For Lipscomb, the lead would hold up after the late score and the defense played a full 90 minutes of soccer...
Lady Bisons ousted by Flames in soccer quarterfinals

Lady Bisons ousted by Flames in soccer quarterfinals

In the quarterfinal matchup of the ASUN tournament, the #1 seed Lady Bisons hosted the #4 seed Liberty and fell at home 1-0, ending their season. The last time these two teams met Lipscomb took a 5-1 victory in Lynchburg. Before that though, they met at Lipscomb in a game that ended in a 0-0 tie through 110 minutes of soccer. Today, the game would look very similar to the last time the Flames came to Lipscomb, but this time Liberty would take a lead 1-0 with a goal by McKinley Burkett in the 20th minute. From there the Bisons would not be able to score at all.  The Bisons had many opportunities with 16 shots, 4 on goal throughout the game and both teams split even with 4 saves from the goal line. This game eliminates the Bisons from further ASUN contests and Liberty will go on to face the University of North Florida on April 15th.  The Bisons have a small chance of making an at-large bid for the NCAA tournament, but with a draw against Bellarmine and an early loss in the ASUN tournament, that route seems unlikely. Though the Bisons did not finish the season where they had hoped, they finished the year at 7-2-2 with the early conference tournament loss. Gallery by Riley...
Inclusion and COVID play role in deciding the next president

Inclusion and COVID play role in deciding the next president

Earlier this spring, President Randolph Lowry announced the wrapping up of his 16-year run at Lipscomb. Now the university has launched a nationwide search, seeking to find a new president that stays true to Lipscomb’s values while embracing the new changes that’ll come in the post-COVID era. “Think of it as a skyscraper,” said Mitch Edgeworth, Vice President of the Board of Trustees and the leader of Lipscomb’s presidential search committee. “What we tend to see on a skyscraper is what’s above the ground, it’s the growth. That’s the new programs, recruiting students and recruiting faculty. That scaffolding gets put up and we keep growing, but you also need to have a deep foundation.” Edgeworth sat down with Lumination immediately following seven hours of “listening” to University and Academy voices. He said, “We really went through a series of questions and had a great chance to listen along the themes of what’s working well, that we don’t want to lose and what we want to keep going forward,” “Then there’s identifying the challenges that the university and or Academy are facing and how might we need to address and how might the next president need to address those challenges.” The factors going into the decision of ‘who’s Lipscomb’s next president?’ are consequential to the preservation of Lipscomb’s faith-based culture and the ability for the university to grow with the times. “We’re going to want a president who is both who’s equally talented at developing both the growth aspects as well as oversee operational efficiency,” said Edgeworth on the characteristics of potential candidates. “Also, a person deeply rooted in his...

Lipscomb’s women’s soccer to begin ASUN conference tournament Saturday

Reporting provided by Danny Kotula and Riley Hoag The Lipscomb women’s soccer team hosts the first round of the 2021 ASUN conference tournament on Saturday afternoon. After missing a whole season of soccer due to COVID-19, the Bisons were able to get an overall record of 7-2-2. The team enters the tournament as the top seed in the makeshift North Division of the ASUN and will face fourth-seeded Liberty at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex at 1 pm. After two straight titles, Lipscomb will be looking to earn a third straight berth in the NCAA College Cup later this month. Some of the top-performing players this season have included Kelli Beiler, redshirt Junior Cami Rogers, and sophomore Molly Grant. Beiler has scored 9 goals, 3 of which have been penalty kicks. Rogers has scored 5 goals with 2 assists, and Grant has scored 4 goals with 3 assists. Overall the team has scored 26 goals and had 20 assists. The past month has been especially kind to the Bisons, who sport five wins and two draws in that time with no losses. During that time, Lipscomb faced Liberty twice, drawing the first and winning the second by a commanding score of 5-1. Attacking prowess abounds for the Bisons, who average 2.4 goals per match on 15 shots. Redshirt junior midfielder Kelli Beiler has poured in nine of those goals in her 11 matches this season, a number that leads the team. Four of those goals were game-winners for the Bisons, so expect Beiler to be key in clutch moments. Striker Molly Grant can also be expected to create goals after...

Lipscomb baseball splits double-header Battle of the Boulevard Tuesday night

The Lipscomb Bisons took on the Belmont Bruins in a doubleheader Battle of the Boulevard. The Bruins would win the first game 5-4 and improve to 12-14 on the season, including an impressive 10-5 home record. The Bisons would go on to win game two, improve to 11-13 on the season, and snap their seven-game road losing streak. In game one of the doubleheader, the Bisons got off to a strong start thanks to a 2-run homer by sophomore third baseman Robbie Merced in the top of the first. The game went scoreless for the next three innings until the Bisons added another run in the top of the fourth off a sacrifice bunt by junior center fielder Maddux Houghton. Patrick Williams was on the mound for the Bisons and pitched a shutout through the first three innings, allowing only one hit. They made a pitching change to start off the fourth inning and brought in sophomore Scott Elgin. Elgin struggled early in the inning allowing three earned runs without recording an out. The Bisons made another pitching change and brought in junior Tyler Drabick who eventually retired the side. With the score tied at 3-3 in the top of the sixth, junior first baseman Malik Williams blasted a solo homer to put the Bisons on top 4-3. After another pitching change, redshirt sophomore Matthew Maldonado took the mound for the Bisons in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Bruins would capitalize on a couple of errors by the Bison defense. Sophomore right fielder John Behrends would score on a throwing error. With the bases loaded and the...
