Shane Streich closes on record breaking season

Shane Streich closes on record breaking season

Shane Streich’s Olympic qualifying run came to an end last weekend after his semifinal run in Eugene, Ore. on Friday.  He finished in eighth in his semifinal run, two places away from being one of the six runners from the entire nation to race for the distinction of representing the United States in the 800-meter race at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.  Streich’s run finishes after a host of personal, school, and national accolades, including a sixth-place finish in the NCAA Men’s Track and Field National Championships, which were also held in Eugene earlier this month. Streich leaves Lipscomb as the first athlete in any sport to compete in Olympic qualifying for any nation. His single year as a graduate student at Lipscomb after transferring from Minnesota was among the most successful in Bisons history, achieving a national finals run as well as an ASUN Conference championship win. Shane Streich reflects on ‘suprising’ season in days leading up to Olympic Trials

The past week has been electric for Shane Streich, Lipscomb Track and Field runner and first ever Lipscomb athlete to ever compete in a final at the NCAA Track & Field Championships. Streich recently spoke to Lumination about his record-breaking season and the exciting road ahead as a summer Olympics hopeful. Following this interview, Streich has offically qualified for the Olympic Trials set for Friday, June 18 in Eugene, Oregon. He is Lipscomb’s first ever athlete to represent the school in the Olympic Trials. He said of his aspiration to represent the United States as an Olympian “entering the season, my goal was to make it to the national meet,” “After that specific race, I not only gained confidence that I could compete at the national level for a potential NCAA championship; it [also] provided the much welcomed surprise of likely qualifying for my first Olympic Trials.” Shane Streich has been nothing less than dynamic on the track this spring and summer for the Bisons. He recently carried that momentum where no Bison has gone before:  advancing to the final of a national championship track and field event, finishing sixth overall in the nation. On the way, Streich set the school record for an 800-meter race and for a 1500-meter race. Further, he was named the ASUN Conference’s Men’s Outdoor Championship Most Outstanding Track Athlete. Many, though, will not have known much of Streich’s story leading up to his moment in the spotlight Friday evening. Given that he’s a graduate transfer from Minnesota, that could certainly be forgiven, but a proper introduction feels necessary by now. The highly-decorated track and cross-country runner isn’t just...

Streich came in sixth place during the 800-meter competition, setting a school record in the process. His performance at the Eugene, Oregon, event beat his earlier school record set at the beginning of the season; with a time of 1:46.70, Streich was among the last nine nationwide men standing in the event. Streich has had a dynamic season, previously being named ASUN Scholar Athlete of the Year alongside recognition in the ASUN Men’s Outdoor Championship Most Outstanding Track Athlete awards. Lady Bisons softball team caps season off with a walk-off win

Lady Bisons softball team caps season off with a walk-off win

Fans of the Lipscomb softball team were treated to a nail-biter Wednesday after three late-game runs secured a 3-2 victory for the team over Tennessee State. This was the team’s first game back since April 20 due to a recent team quarantine, which led to questions about if the team would come out slow. That was soon answered after the early innings of the game. The Lady Bisons weren’t able to create offense early and trailed 2-0 through five innings. The Lady Tigers two runs came in the third inning after junior shortstop Lauren Farias scored on an error, and sophomore outfielder Analeigh Coursey scored by way of a sac fly. The offensive drought came to an end in the sixth inning when sophomore outfielder Presley Leebrick led off the inning with a solo homer to right field. That burst of offense set up what would be an eventful final inning. Breanna Burke pitched a strong final inning, not allowing any hits and striking out two batters in the process. The bottom half of the inning started with a double to centerfield from senior infielder Jenna Endris. Following that, sophomore infielder Kelly Paulson, entered the game as a pinch-runner. Paulson advanced to third off a sac bunt from junior outfielder Jessie Brown. Paulson then scored from a single to right center by junior outfielder Abby Davis. Following the hit, Davis stole second base. This all set up a walk-off ground single batted by junior infielder Amy Vetula. The win boosted the team to a winning record, finishing the regular season at 17-16. The Lady Bisons will hit the road for the first round of the ASUN tournament facing the Liberty Flames. The first...

Lipscomb falls in weekend series against North Alabama 1-2

After a rocky start to the weekend, Bison Baseball closed out their series against North Alabama with a strong 14-5 victory. The series kicked off Friday afternoon with the Lions’ making early progress as Bison pitcher junior Max Habegger allowed four runs in his inning and two thirds of work. Meanwhile, offensively the Bisons could not get anything going, until the Lions had already extended their lead to five.  Finally, in the fifth inning junior center fielder Maddux Houghton brought home a run with an RBI-triple and scored off of a wild pitch bringing the Bisons back within striking distance.  Senior infielder David Graves added to the Bisons score with a home run in the bottom of the sixth, but a North Alabama insurance run in the seventh and four runners left stranded by the Bisons clinched the game one victory for North Alabama, 6-3. Saturday, the Bisons looked to bounce back and were able to take the early advantage with sophomore infielder Robbie Merced’s run brought home by freshman outfielder Tiger Borom.  North Alabama evened the game at 1 in the fifth inning before Houghton added to his RBI total and Merced scored another run.  The Lions would not stay at bay, however, and once again the game was tied.  Lipscomb thought they had the winning run in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore catcher Chaz Bertolani hit an RBI single, but the back and forth trend continued, and the game was tied at 3.  Sophomore closer Tyler Guilfoil, who came in during the fifth inning, was tasked with finishing the game for the Bisons, but struggled...

Bison baseball defeats No. 4-ranked Tennessee Vols

The Bisons baseball team traveled to Knoxville on Tuesday and defeated No. 4-ranked Tennessee 4-1. The Bisons were able to hold the Volunteers scoreless through the final eight innings to record the victory. The game marks Lipscomb’s first win against a top five opponent since 2015. This is the first time the Bisons have beaten Tennessee since 2008, as well as their first win ever at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Tennessee has been held to two runs only two other times so far this season. The game got off to a quick start. Freshmen outfielder Tiger Borom showed off his speed by beating out an infield grounder to lead off. With two outs, junior Malik Williams blasted an RBI double to give the Bisons an early 1-0 lead. Redshirt freshmen Ike Buxton would get the start for the Bisons. Tennessee was able to record a run to tie the game at 1-1. However, Buxton was able to strike out the last batter to strand a runner on third. Lipscomb continued its offense in the top of the second with a leadoff single by Carter Smith. Sophomore Robbie Merced would reach first on a fielding error, advancing Smith to second. Freshmen Trey Ham hit a sacrifice fly to advance both runners into scoring position. After a pitching change by the Volunteers and with two outs, Borom singled up the middle to drive in both runners and give the Bisons a 3-1 lead. Borom was able to show off his speed once again by stealing second and putting himself in scoring position. Junior Maddux Houghton would single up the left side and drive...
