The women’s soccer team was defeated by the Cincinnati Bearcats, 3-2 on Thursday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex, thanks to what would become a game-winning penalty kick. Cincinnati came into the game only having won one game this season; while the Bisons came in having won four of their last five games. The game started off with a goal by Bearcat forward, Han Tang, scored in the first three minutes of the game. The Bisons didn’t go away though; Lipscomb scored two unanswered goals before the first half was over. The first goal came off an assist by Bisons midfielder, Cami Rogers and scored by forward, Olivia Doak. The second goal came from an assist from almost midfield and again came from Rogers but this time to midfielder Kaitlin Echols who buried the shot. The second half was a different story for the Bisons. The Bearcats came out firing on all cylinders and scored the first goal of the half to tie it up. “It rattled us a little bit; it made it hard to answer at times,” Lipscomb coach Kevin O’Brien said about the way the Bearcats came out in the second half. After Cincinnati tied it up, they just kept pushing and eventually scored on a penalty kick thanks to a handball penalty. The penalty kick goal was scored by Tang, her second goal of the game. The penalty kick goal ended up being the game-winning goal for the Bearcats. Lipscomb University’s Men’s Soccer team played its second home game of the season against the Evansville Aces Tuesday night at the soccer complex. The game was really a tale of two halves, with it being relatively close up until halfway into the 22 minute. Lipscomb held possession on the Aces side of the field, peppering off four shots in a row. Then after a couple more missed chances from both sides, momentum shifted in favor of the Bisons. A fast break opened up for the Bisons with Hayes Wood and Noah Gulden taking advantage. A great cross into the box from Gulden helped Lipscomb score a goal in the 37 minute making it 1-0 Bison. Hayes Wood put himself in prime scoring position, and all Gulden had to do was feed him the ball. The Aces would only have another shot in the first half coming from Francesco Brunetti as the Bisons would hold onto their lead. The second half began fairly well for the Bisons. They would have an early possession on the Aces side of the field and would get off a few shots while having two corner kicks. However, nothing would come of it. Lipscomb’s backline held up for quite some time in the second half. However, momentum shifted after a couple of errors from Lipscomb on the fast break. Goalkeeper Michael Sibley would keep the Bisons in the game with his incredible performance up until the 82 minute. Lipscomb Academy’s Mustangs collapsed in the second half, allowing the Pope John Paul II Knights to overcome a 14-0 halftime deficit and run away with a 33-14 victory that sinks the Academy to 1-1 on the season. The August 30 Friday Night Lights-style festivities, dubbed Mustang Stampede, began with a concert at the Lipscomb Academy baseball field. The show features performers from the university CEA program: Kelle Cates, Abby Siler and Ele Ivory. Ivory was a contestant on Season 15 of NBC’s “The Voice” and was guest-coached by Lipscomb alum Kelsea Ballerini while on the show. Ivory also participated in the prestigious John Lennon Songwriting Contest, named for the founder of The Beatles. All the Mustang Stampede fun began at 4:30 and continued on well into the night as the crowd moved over to the football field, where thing took a turn for the worse. The first quarter remained scoreless as both defenses found answers to both the rushing and passing game. However, it was the Academy that was threatening as the first quarter came to a close. Although the Mustangs were unable to score on the half-yard line and turned the ball over on downs, the Knights began their drive at the six-inch line and were unable to recover from this horrible field position. The Mustangs capitalized on their favorable field position to score twice in the second quarter behind Kyle McNamara’s and Jayden Lyles’s touchdowns, giving Lipscomb a 14-0 lead coming into the second half. The women’s soccer team defeated Belmont, 2-1, Sunday in a rain-spattered Battle of the Boulevard. “It was a really tight game. You never know in women’s soccer how the ball is going to bounce,” said Bisons coach Kevin O’Brien. “I’m really proud of the response that they dug deep and kept going and going and going and persevered against the most organized and athletic Belmont team I have seen in the past five or six years.” The first half started slowly, with neither team able to find the back of the net while Lipscomb took eight shots to one from Belmont. “I’m happy that we continue to create good goal-scoring chances,” said O’Brien noting the failed shots. “We have to continue to work on our finishing, so we can maybe convert more of our chances. “I feel like in preseason we were flying, so we have to pick that back up and figure out ultimately why aren’t we maybe as efficient as we had been.” The second half picked up when Belmont’s Paige Hewitt scored in the 53rd minute, but the Bisons dug deep and fought back. “We had a decent amount of possession, and we were creating good chances,” said O’Brien, adding “… when you get slugged in the face and you’re not expecting it, you have to respond. It’s fight or flight. Super Bowl champion quarterback Trent Dilfer — who was under center for the Baltimore Ravens’ 34-7 2001 rout of the New York Giants — kicked off his era as Lipscomb Academy head coach with a 66-8 throttling of the visiting Glencliff Colts. And a rock star took part in the Friday night party as well. In January,Dilfer, who also has been an ESPN analyst, inherited a Mustang football team that had won only three games in the last two seasons. For the last seven months, he has poured countless hours into rebuilding a winning culture at Lipscomb Academy. Dilfer’s additions have included assembling a staff of more than 30 coaches; giving the players new uniforms and top-of-the-line, protective helmets; and increasing and redesigning practices and summer training, but these improvements are not limited to the football team. In his quest to make Lipscomb the top high school football program, Dilfer has enhanced the fan experience with the all-new Mustang Stampede, which includes a performance on the newly built soundstage next to the baseball field. All of these changes have brought national attention to the Mustangs, but Friday night it was finally time to see if this Lipscomb team would live up to the hype. Women’s soccer was shut out, 4-0, by the Northern Kentucky Norse in the season opener Thursday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. The loss came after a strong pre-season slate in which they beat South Alabama and Middle Tennessee, outscoring those opponents 7-1. “We had a really good preseason,” coach Kevin O’Brien said. “We had two great performances and two great results.” That success didn’t carry over once the season began, however. The Norse scored the first two goals within the first 10 minutes of play. Both goals came within two minutes of one another. “I thought they started the game brighter than we did,” O’Brien said. “They took the lead pretty quickly and from then on, it was us chasing.” After the first 10 minutes, the Bisons turned things around by outshooting the visitors 8-6 during the half. But those shots didn’t make it past Norse goalkeeper Mimi Stines. In the second half, it was more of the same for the Norse goalkeeper, Stines as she continued to save shot after shot. She finished the game with nine saves and no goals against. The Bisons played two different goalkeepers: Melissa Gray in the first half and Hannah Parish in the second half. Both Bisons goalkeepers finished with two saves and two shots against. “It’s a really interesting game sometimes,because I didn’t think we played particularly poorly, but we gave up four goals,” O’Brien said. “I think someone from the outside would say we got smashed but in reality, we didn’t get smashed, it was a good competition.” The Bisons will host the battle of the boulevard against Belmont...
