Lady Bison softball mercy-rules North Carolina

The Lady Bisons softball team beat North Carolina Tar Heels 12-2 in five innings at Draper Diamond, in their last game before the suspension of sports until mid-April. The Lady Bisons took control of the game early, scoring four runs in the first inning. The first two came from an RBI single by Hannah Devault to deep center field that allowed Peyton Ward and Presley Leebrick to score.  Immediately after scoring, Olivia Ward came up to bat. Ward followed up Devault’s single with a two-run shot over center field to increase the Lipscomb’s lead to 4-0.  “I thought offensively we came out swinging and swinging well from the get-go,” said Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman. North Carolina managed to get only one run out of the top of the second thanks to a sacrifice fly from Lexi Godwin to make it a three-run game.  The bottom of the second inning was much like the bottom of the first, with Lipscomb putting up another four runs. This time it was from a Hannah Devault grand slam that gave the Lady Bisons an 8-1 lead. In the fourth inning, North Carolina’s Kiersten Licea hit a solo shot over the right field fence that decreased Lipscomb’s lead to six runs.   In the bottom of the fourth the Lady Bisons put the game away. The Bison-filled cafeteria was particularly steaming with debate on Friday, in anticipation of the big game, Super Bowl LIV. Super Bowl Sunday is an unofficial national holiday, and even those who don’t normally watch NFL games will be watching. Elena Newton, a sophomore social work major, had a personal reason for predicting “The 49ers.” With a laugh, she explained her reasoning:  “Because I don’t like the Chiefs, since they knocked out the Titans. Also, they seem like the better team.” Junior criminal justice major Cooper Blanchard was confident in his pick: “Even though he shredded the Titans…I think that (Kansas City second-year pro) Patrick Mahomes is going to go down as the greatest quarterback of all time with the most touchdown passes…maybe not yards…probably yards. But most touchdown passes of all time. ‘The Mechanics’ win annual Dodgeball tournament

“Campus Security,” “Hydro-Flask” and “Nun-of-That” all made team costume appearances at the Student Activities Board’s annual dodgeball tournament. The event was a Halloween season hit once again, allowing the student body to come together in an epic competition for the title of dodgeball champion and a large purple trophy to show that Lipscomb pride. The competition was heated as teams battled it out to the end slowly being eliminated in a winner-play-winner format. “Campus Security” took on “The Mechanics” in the championship round. “Campus Security” has won the tournament two years in a row, but this year the streak ended. “The Mechanics” won the trophy for 2019. Lipscomb women take down Jacksonville for first win since November

The Lipscomb women’s basketball team took down Jacksonville University 61-58 on Saturday afternoon, breaking a 19-game losing streak dating back to mid-November. The Lady Bisons led by 17 at halftime and by  13 with 7:37 left in the fourth quarter, but Jacksonville nearly came back. The game ended on a missed three-point jumper by senior guard Jasmyn Brown with two seconds left, and Lipscomb forward Kailey Rosenbaum scooped the rebound. It’s the first win for the Lady Bisons (3-20, 1-9 ASUN) since Nov. 15, a game in which they edged Alabama A&M 62-58 to begin the year 2-1. Jacksonville dropped to 12-12 (5-6 ASUN). Junior guard Carleigh Short scored a team-high 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting, while Rosenbaum added 16. Redshirt sophomore forward Emily Kmec led the team with eight rebounds, and freshman forward Taylor Hammack threw in four assists. For the Dolphins, Brown led with 16 points, while senior forward Trudy Walker grabbed 15 boards. Senior guard Rolanda Hayes tabbed three assists. The Lady Bisons now have their first ASUN win, but they still rank at the bottom of the ASUN standings. Lipscomb plays at Liberty on Tuesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT. Photo by McKenzi...
