Rhodes College women’s basketball coach Lauren Sumski is taking the same job at Lipscomb, athletic director Philip Hutcheson announced Monday morning. Sumski has been head coach at Rhodes since 2017 and compiled a 35-21 record over two seasons. She is the first-ever female to lead the Lipscomb women’s basketball program in the school’s DI era. “I am humbled, honored, and grateful,” Sumski said in a release. “I am excited for the opportunity. I think that Lipscomb has a ton of things in place for us to field a successful women’s basketball program. “More than the things, it’s just such a high-quality type of person there. We’re excited to get to work and start building back up.” Sumski, 27, will be one of the youngest college head coaches in the nation. She graduated from Rhodes in 2014 and also played one year at Tennessee under legendary coach Pat Summit. She was rated the 28th-best high school prospect in the nation by ESPNU Hoopsgurlz, although injuries slowed her time as a Lady Vol, prompting her to return to Memphis to play for Rhodes. Following her graduation, Sumski spent three seasons as an assistant at Union under Lipscomb alum Mark Campbell. Eight students have been elected as Senators-at-Large, the Lipscomb Student Government Association announced Thursday afternoon. On Tuesday, Jack Webber defeated Jase George and Breckin Horton for SGA president. Senior Sierra Sparks served as SGA president this school year. “I could not have done it without the support of the student body,” Webber said. “I want to thank everyone who helped to give me this opportunity. Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander is changing addresses on Belmont Boulevard. In an email sent to students Wednesday morning, Lipscomb president Dr. Randy Lowry III announced that Alexander will accept the open Belmont coaching job. Alexander will be formally introduced as the Bruins’ head coach Thursday at 9 a.m. CT in a welcome event at Curb Event Center. Lipscomb associate head coach Roger Idstrom will serve as the interim while Lipscomb conducts a national search for its next coach. Alexander previously spent 20 seasons at Belmont, including four as a player and 16 as an assistant under the legendary Rick Byrd. Alexander has spent the last eight seasons as a head coach, including the last six at Lipscomb. “It’s an honor and a great privilege to have the opportunity to return to Belmont,” Alexander said in a Belmont release. “I’m grateful that Dr. [Bob] Fisher and Scott Corley believe I’m the right person to lead this incredibly successful program. The experiences gained over the last eight years have shaped and impacted me greatly, and I return to Belmont far better positioned to lead.” Byrd spent 33 years as Belmont’s head coach. He won 805 career games, which ranks 12th all-time among NCAA Division I coaches. Lipscomb fans will get to see the Lipscomb men’s basketball team host every game it plays in the ASUN tournament next week. After an 87-75 win at North Alabama’s Flowers Hall on Friday night, the Bisons (23-6, 14-2 ASUN) secured the No. 1 seed and home-court advantage for the ASUN tournament thanks to a tiebreaker over Liberty. “I’m certainly pleased and proud of our team,” Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander said. “I think people picked us to be first, and we finished first.” The tiebreaker with Liberty (also 14-2 ASUN) came down to how both teams played against No. 3 seed North Florida. The Bisons beat North Florida twice, while the Flames split their contests with the Ospreys. Senior forward Rob Marberry dominated in the paint on Friday night, leading with 22 points (10-of-12 field goals). “It’s good to bounce back, have a good offensive game,” Marberry said. “Pretty balanced offensive game throughout the whole team.” Video by Erin Franklin The Bisons were led in rebounds by senior forward Eli Pepper, who had 10. A power outage is affecting multiple buildings across campus today. The power has been out since at least 6:24 a.m. when the first alert email was sent out to students. The Lipscomb University Campus Service Operations team is still currently working to resolve the issue. Classes held in Beaman Library, Burton Health Sciences Center, Collins Auditorium, Swang Center, Ezell Center and the Student Activities Center are canceled until noon. The Gathering has been canceled and will not meet today. Update — At around 12:53 p.m., Lipscomb sent a campus-wide email stating that “afternoon classes will resume as scheduled with the 1:20 p.m. class sessions.” With the exception of Allen Arena, Dugan Field, the Student Activities Center (SAC) and McQuiddy, most of the buildings have power now. SAC classes “will follow the Class Schedule Disruption Policy.” Update at 11 a.m. — A campus service operations member said a 13,800 volt splice went out. It was approximately 15 years old, so possibly due to its age, it died and consequently took out the rest of the line. “It’s an old splice,” he said. “Probably a 13,800 volt one that went out. We’ll get the power up soon.” Additionally, an email was sent out to the Lipscomb campus announcing that power was expected to come back on in the early afternoon. A splice allows multiple wires to carry a current, and since this one died, the power went out. They are currently rewiring so that they can remove the old splice and put in a new one.
