As the winter storm moves across the country, Nashville began to feel its effects. Saturday night’s cold temperatures caused roads to freeze and made travel difficult, but when the sleet and snow began Sunday, roads began to close, and Nashvillians were encouraged to stay home. The university made the decision to move all classes online for Monday and decisions about subsequent days are pending. Lipscomb’s men’s basketball team was supposed to play at Stetson this weekend, but since the Bisons had played more conference games than most of their ASUN opponents, the conference announced Lipscomb would get a bye week to allow other teams to fill in the gap. Luckily, Lipscomb was able to snag a non-conference opponent in Bluefield State, a Division II independent out of West Virginia, for a Saturday matinee game. The Bisons used 41 bench points and limited the Big Blue to just 21 second-half points to win 89-56. “First off, we’re real [sic] thankful for Bluefield agreeing to come in and play,” Lipscomb head coach Lennie Acuff said during a postgame interview on ESPN+. “We found out Tuesday afternoon that we weren’t gonna be going to Florida.” Redshirt junior center Ahsan Asadullah paced Lipscomb (11-8, 5-3 ASUN) with 19 points, followed by 13 from sophomore guard KJ Johnson and 11 from sophomore guard Carson Cary. Junior Marquez Cooper and sophomore Taj-Maal Toney dialed in 13 apiece for Bluefield State (1-4), while junior guard Brandon Anyanwu had 11. The bench only contributed seven points for the Big Blue, who were without the top rebounder in Division II Alex Nunnely due to injury. “I thought our bench did a really good job, and I was really excited to see those guys get a chance,” Acuff said. “Cause they’ve played well in practice. After a crushing defeat on Friday night, Lipscomb was still looking for their confidence in round 2 of the home series matchup against FGCU. With a little spurring for the Bisons the first half still started off similarly to how their previous contest finished up, stunted on offense. Luckily for Lipscomb, the Eagles looked cold at the start of this matchup too, and only 19 points were scored in the first 10 minutes of the half. The defense was at a maximum to start off this ballgame. Midway through the first half though Lipscomb seemed to finally find their energy after a technical foul called on FGCU the Bison’s held that momentum into the half with a nine-point lead. And for the first time all weekend, the Bisons looked to have the energy and chemistry that was lacking Friday night. One of the most standout performances of the night for the Bisons came from Freshman Will Pruitt. Pruitt saw his most minutes in a conference matchup so far with 18 coming off the bench. Down the stretch of the 2nd half as well, he seemed to be the pacesetter for Lipscomb. Lipscomb held upon their strong defense going into the second half but saw their lead shrink down with a scoring drought midway through the second half. Lipscomb came off of a split last weekend with UNF and looked poised to bounce back against the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, but the Bisons were unable to stop the Eagles who outplayed Lipscomb in the second half and won by a score of 79-69. With an 11-0 run to start off the game for Lipscomb, things looked optimistic in the first half. However, from there, FGCU went on a 19-4 scoring run that had them up midway through the first half by four. The Bisons managed to claw their way back towards the end of the half with a three-pointer from sophomore guard KJ Johnson, free throws from senior guard Romeao Ferguson and hustle plays from senior forward Parker Hazen. With the late surge in the first half, Lipscomb found themselves ahead 36-32 going into the halftime break. With a fairly even first half from the conference foes, the question was who would pull ahead in the second half. As Lipscomb has been struggling to hold leads in recent matchups, the Bisons were hoping to break the trend with some reliable defense for the second half. Out of the gates, things were neck and neck. Both teams battled for the lead, but once the Eagles took the lead with 12:36 in the second half, they wouldn’t look back. The Lipscomb women’s basketball team has won a combined six conference games over the past two seasons. After falling in its first two ASUN games last weekend, Lipscomb got its first in an 84-72 home opener over Division I newcomer Bellarmine. It was the kind of balanced performance you’d dream of if you’re a head coach: all five starters for the Lady Bisons (4-5, 1-2 ASUN) scored in double figures. Lipscomb also went 16-of-32 from downtown. Junior guard and Hendersonville native Jane Deason tabbed a team-leading 15 points, while senior forward Taylor Clark had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sydney Shelton, Jalyn Holcomb and Casey Collier all brought in 14 points apiece. Bellarmine (0-6, 0-1 ASUN) just joined the conference this year after making the leap from Division II, where it made 16 NCAA tourney appearances. The Knights actually scored a season-high 72 points on Sunday, with senior guard Tasia Jeffries setting a new career-high with a team-leading 25. Bellarmine also shot 46 percent from downtown after averaging less than 20 percent of three-point makes all season long, but the Knights could not overcome large deficits throughout the game. Lipscomb’s 32 first-quarter points made Bellarmine’s day difficult from the get-go. The Lady Bisons led 21-7 with 3:58 left after Shelton connected from downtown. Bellarmine used a timeout at that point to try and slow Lipscomb’s momentum. After having a field day against Liberty on Friday, the Lipscomb men’s basketball team was shut down offensively, making just 35 percent of its field goals. Lipscomb lost 66-50 on Saturday afternoon, wrapping up a slate of two consecutive games at home against Liberty in the ASUN’s COVID-modified scheduling format. It was a reversal for both teams, as the Bisons (6-6, 1-1 ASUN) had outperformed the Flames in that same category in the previous matchup. But Liberty (9-4, 1-1 ASUN) improved its three-point game a day after going 7-of-29 from downtown, clipping in 43 percent of its triples. “Yesterday was really, really an emotional game,” Lipscomb coach Lennie Acuff said during an interview with ESPN+. “We got off to a great start, and we had to just kind of hang on for dear life… It just takes a lot out of you, and we just didn’t have the ability or capacity today to rally and put another good performance together.
