During the non-conference slate, it would seem that Liberty’s men’s basketball program was the stronger team after beating two SEC teams and rattling mid-major programs. Lipscomb meanwhile had just two non-conference wins against Division I, opponents, after being picked to win the ASUN. But then the script completely flipped Saturday at Allen Arena, as the Bisons (6-5, 1-0 ASUN) raced off to a 35-14 advantage over Liberty (8-4, 0-1 ASUN) late in the first half and won the game 77-70. Liberty would narrow that lead to as little as three in the second half, but Lipscomb led the entire game. “It was a really, really, really good team win… we only turned it over four times, and that’s fantastic,” Lipscomb coach Lennie Acuff said during a postgame interview with ESPN+. The Flames were without head coach Ritchie McKay, who is dealing with COVID-19. Associate head coach Brad Soucie took his place. Redshirt junior center Ahsan Asadullah led the way with 24 points after struggling to score consistently all season, while sophomore guard KJ Johnson continued his impressive second-year campaign with 17. “It’s definitely a confidence booster,” Asadullah said. “I knew that eventually, they would be falling. I’ve been working on it outside of practice.” Senior forward Parker Hazen and grad transfer guard Romeao Ferguson combined for 16 rebounds on the defensive side. Liberty meanwhile got 16 points out of its leading scorer Darius McGhee, a 5-9 guard with great vertical ability. But his dreary day at the three-point line (2-for-9) highlighted what was a lackluster overall team performance from downtown. Lipscomb came up with a crosstown split when they battled two local rivals in three nights, finishing off the homestand with a 61-45 victory over Trevecca Tuesday. It was some consolation for the Bisons who fell, 81-71, to Belmont Saturday night. Ahsan Asadullah and KJ Johnson combined for 45 points, 16 rebounds, six assists and three steals in the Belmont game, the only “Battle of the Boulevard” game this season. While the Belmont game was nip-and-tuck, Lipscomb started hot against Trevecca. The Bisons took the lead, 13-5 in the first 14 minutes of the game. The Trojans battled to keep it close, but after a three-pointer from Carson Carry, and free throws from Johnson and Asadullah there was no stopping the Bisons. The lead continued to grow throughout the first half, ending the half with a 31-21 advantage, even after coach Lennie Acuff used virtually the whole bench in the period. Early in the second half, the Trojans got within six points of the Bisons. The Bisons pulled back ahead in a 7-0 scoring streak, gaining a 13-point advantage over the Trojans. The Bisons maintained that lead for a entirety of the game including several hot shooting streaks from KJ Johnson and Jake Wolfe. After a long election season, clarity finally came to the 2020 presidential race when it was announced by the television networks and other media that Joe Biden had secured the necessary electoral votes to take him to the Oval Office in January. The race to get to the necessary 270 electoral votes ultimately came down to Pennsylvania, a state that went red for Trump in 2016 but shifted blue this year. Up until Trump’s election four years ago, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin were considered the so-called “Blue Wall,” generally secured by Democrats. This year, they returned to that pattern. Another monumental moment for American history was made as well in the election of Joe Biden: Kamala Harris will become the first female, and woman of color to hold the position of vice president. Lipscomb students, interviewed in advance of Biden’s speech to the nation Saturday already felt like celebrating. “If Biden wins, I might cry of happiness,” said Audrey-Ange Tsafack, a Lipscomb biochemistry major. “I would be so overjoyed because it would bring me faith in humankind again.” Biden ran on the premise of “restoring the soul of the nation” after turbulent years of racial and political divide during the Trump administration came to a head this summer in a country already reeling from the COVID pandemic. Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Biden went on to become a U.S. senator representing Delaware before becoming vice president for Barack Obama between 2008 and 2016. After nearly a decade of defeat at the hands of the Christ Presbyterian Academy Lions, the Lipscomb Academy Mustangs edged out their rivals to take the regional championship. In response to the win, Mustang Head Coach Trent Dilfer spoke highly of his team following the game but emphasized that the season was far from over. “I’m proud of our guys tonight..it’s obviously a very big win for our school…but in that same breath, this is only 48 minutes of the 672 we want to play this year.” The low scoring affair began just before 9:00 PM due to the intense rain in the Nashville area this Friday. 14 of the Mustang’s 20 points came within the first quarter. Tonight, Belmont University will host the second and final presidential debate. As part of the increased security surrounding the debate, freshman students from several campus dorms were forced to leave and stay elsewhere. Affected freshmen were sent to Gaylord Opryland to make way for secret service. “A week after we moved into campus things started transforming completely…and about three weeks ago, my residence hall found out that we would have to be moved off campus to Opryland hotel,” Says Becca Pavelich, a freshman at Belmont University. “I wasn’t complaining, Opryland is a beautiful place to go. It was just definitely a shock that we found out so close to the debate that we’d be having to leave.” According to the Belmont Vision, The university provides students with transportation, meals and internet access during their predicted 30-hour stint at Opryland. Pavelich says “we’re honestly not sure what time we get to come back to campus, but we were happy to be able to go somewhere as nice as Opryland.” For Pavelich, the experience of a debate on campus has been a positive one, she says “It is just so surreal. I’ve been watching the other debates and paying attention and to the news but it’s just so cool to think that all of that has been happening on our campus,” “It’s happening tonight on our campus and at our event center that we walk by every day. The Lipscomb Academy Mustangs took the field Friday night against the Franklin Road Academy Panthers in what was only the third game of the year for the Panthers. Overall, the Mustangs defeated the Panthers in a 61-0 win. Coach Dilfer was very proud of his team for the win and how they’ve dealt with this unusual season. “I’m proud of them, I’m proud of their week of preparation, I’m proud of how they are handling the chaos in the world around them, and I’m proud of them buying in, every single day, to getting better.” The Mustangs came charging out of the gate with an emphasis on the run game and a touchdown on the first drive from Quarterback Luther Richesson. A forced fumble from Senior Zach Larkin lead to great field position and allowed Lipscomb to run in their second touchdown of the night for the early 13-0 lead. The Panthers seemed rattled after the first two drives and running back Jeffery Vercher was forced to take some time off the field with what appeared to be a tweaked ankle. With Vercher off the field, FRA opened up the passing game which resulted in an interception return for a touchdown by Safety Jaden Lyles of Lipscomb Academy. Despite Vercher returning, Lipscomb Academy continued to find the end zone. The Mustang defense wreaked havoc and provided great field position throughout the first half.
