The Lipscomb Academy Mustangs football team took on the Page High School Patriots this Friday. The game started off with a 36-yard field goal from the LA Mustangs with four minutes and 16 seconds on the clock leading them into the second quarter with a three-point lead on the patriots. After a Lipscomb punt, the Patriots took over first and 10 from their 45-yard line. The Patriots then punched it in from 4 yards out with seven minutes and 14 seconds on the clock, gaining a 7-3 lead on the Mustangs. A 19-yard pass resulted in a first down for the mustangs with four minutes and 23 seconds to go, the mustangs regained their lead with a score of 10-7. Two minutes later, number 26-Porter, strikes again with another Mustangs Touchdown bringing the halftime score to a 17-7 lead going into the third quarter. The Mustangs started the second half with the ball at the 20-yard line. On the fourth down, the ball was turned over and the Patriots regained possession at their 35-yard line and ran it in for six, gaining the extra point. The third quarter ended with a score of 17-14, Patriots ball. The mustangs then intercepted the ball and forced the turnover, taking possession over the ball and setting Lyles up to run into to the Patriots 22 yard line. The game went back and forth throughout the 2nd and 3rd quarters but resulted in a 24-14 win for mustangs. Lipscomb Academy will play at home against Goodpasture next Friday night. ...

The women’s soccer team was defeated by the Cincinnati Bearcats, 3-2 on Thursday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex, thanks to what would become a game-winning penalty kick. Cincinnati came into the game only having won one game this season; while the Bisons came in having won four of their last five games. The game started off with a goal by Bearcat forward, Han Tang, scored in the first three minutes of the game. The Bisons didn’t go away though; Lipscomb scored two unanswered goals before the first half was over. The first goal came off an assist by Bisons midfielder, Cami Rogers and scored by forward, Olivia Doak. The second goal came from an assist from almost midfield and again came from Rogers but this time to midfielder Kaitlin Echols who buried the shot. The second half was a different story for the Bisons. The Bearcats came out firing on all cylinders and scored the first goal of the half to tie it up. “It rattled us a little bit; it made it hard to answer at times,” Lipscomb coach Kevin O’Brien said about the way the Bearcats came out in the second half. After Cincinnati tied it up, they just kept pushing and eventually scored on a penalty kick thanks to a handball penalty. The penalty kick goal was scored by Tang, her second goal of the game. The penalty kick goal ended up being the game-winning goal for the Bearcats. The annual Tennessee State Fair is underway only four miles away from Lipscomb’s campus at The Fairgrounds Nashville. The fair has a wide range of exhibits and shows that will be going on through this weekend. Some shows include racing barnyard animals, clowns, ventriloquists, wrestling, acrobats, and even a show about science. There are exhibits where you can see barnyard animals, balloon sculptures, model trains, and a 725-pound pumpkin. The fair will also be holding competitions this weekend that anyone is allowed to compete in. There will be an apple pie eating contest, bubble gum blowing contest, and a corn hole competition. Food has a very big presence at the fair. You can get a full-size porkchop on a stick or any meat you can think of really on a stick, funnel cakes, corndogs, or even a fried Goo Goo Cluster on a stick. As many students have noticed over the past week, Starbucks has had a shortage of their goods and supplies, including flavors, cup sizes and more. This has not only caused frustration with students but also with staff and management at Starbucks. Many students were impacted by this shortage, and several questioned why this was happening. “It’s so frustrating!” exclaims Katrina Hughes, a frequent customer at the University’s Starbucks. “I’ve started going to ABP to get my coffee in the morning just because it’s cheaper, and they actually have things.” The General Manager and Operations Manager of Food Services, Wolcott Fary and Anthony Bates, explain the situation, and why the shortage occurred. “It’s all about supply chain,” says Fary. Starbucks was due to have a delivery last week but didn’t receive anything until this past Tuesday, the 10th. This caused management to scramble for solutions, including borrowing from other local Starbucks companies, as well as utilizing the other food services on campus. However, this was only a temporary solution. In the meantime, management wants to compensate for students who were affected by this shortage. Bates, along with other management, have decided to print out vouchers for the students who were affected by the crisis, and is allowing Starbucks to hand them out to those they recognize as were affected. They note that service recovery is vital to them, and want to acknowledge the students’ frustration. “We try to do things that really do show that we’re partners…our job on campus is to take care of the students; that’s the only reason we’re here,” Fary says. Lipscomb University’s Men’s Soccer team played its second home game of the season against the Evansville Aces Tuesday night at the soccer complex. The game was really a tale of two halves, with it being relatively close up until halfway into the 22 minute. Lipscomb held possession on the Aces side of the field, peppering off four shots in a row. Then after a couple more missed chances from both sides, momentum shifted in favor of the Bisons. A fast break opened up for the Bisons with Hayes Wood and Noah Gulden taking advantage. A great cross into the box from Gulden helped Lipscomb score a goal in the 37 minute making it 1-0 Bison. Hayes Wood put himself in prime scoring position, and all Gulden had to do was feed him the ball. The Aces would only have another shot in the first half coming from Francesco Brunetti as the Bisons would hold onto their lead. The second half began fairly well for the Bisons. They would have an early possession on the Aces side of the field and would get off a few shots while having two corner kicks. However, nothing would come of it. Lipscomb’s backline held up for quite some time in the second half. However, momentum shifted after a couple of errors from Lipscomb on the fast break. Goalkeeper Michael Sibley would keep the Bisons in the game with his incredible performance up until the 82 minute. Yesterday at the gathering, 4 students from the Bahamas spoke about how Hurricane Dorian damaged their country and then gave ways for other students to be of help to the Bahamas. The Bahamas are off the coast of Florida and the capital, Nassau island is where these 4 students are from. This all started when The National Hurricane Center issued a state of a tropical depression on August 24th, but 6 days later the storm intensified and developed into a category 5 hurricane. The hurricane hit both the Abaco and Grand Bahama islands. The record-breaking hurricane passed Nassau but has left many of the Bahamian people who evacuated homeless and displaced on the island. The death count from the hurricane has unofficially continued to rise past the 100 marks and will only continue to rise as there are still many people missing and unidentified. The estimated damage to the Bahamas is in the billions. Lipscomb is offering opportunities to donate to the Bahamas through its website as well as through phone calls. Celea Brown prayed for the Bahamas and over the Bahamian people saying, “Dear God, We know that the Bahamas are a place where you live, we know that your people worship you and you are the center of our entire life. God, I pray for the spirit of restoration, the spirit of peace, the spirit of miracles on my Bahama land and my people. God, I just thank you for this entire student body.
