Lipscomb completes 1st sweep of Jacksonville since 2004-2005

Lipscomb completes 1st sweep of Jacksonville since 2004-2005

After holding Jacksonville to only nine field goals on the afternoon, Lipscomb walked away with their biggest win ever against the Dolphins 63-36. Lipscomb freshman guard and reigning ASUN freshman of the week Jordan Peete and Jacksonville junior guard Deshari Graham traded layups to start off the afternoon, but this two-point tie would be the closest the Dolphins would get to the Bisons for the rest of the game.  Although both teams suffered from inconsistent scoring throughout the game, it was the Lady Bisons who capitalized on more opportunities, due in large part to the 54 rebounds Lipscomb had. The Bisons shared the ball and the scoring, and as a result, although no players made it into double-figures for Lipscomb, 13 players scored, and all 14 eligible players played. Junior guard Jane Deason, senior guard Lindsey Whiteside, and senior forward Taylor Clark led the way for the Bisons each scoring nine points. For the Dolphins, only two players scored more than one field goal, and the team as a whole combined for nine field goals and 16 free throws. Senior guard Alexis Pierce scored two three-point baskets and finished the afternoon with 11 points. Winning both games on the weekend gives Lipscomb their first sweep of Jacksonville since the 2004-2005 season. With the win this afternoon, the Lady Bisons improve to 9-7, 6-4 ASUN and remain undefeated at home for the season. Lipscomb is currently fourth in the ASUN conference standings, but they still have to play North Florida, Kennesaw State, and North Alabama in the coming weekends.  Next week’s ASUN women’s basketball slate will be announced on Monday...
Senate acquits former President Trump on impeachment charges related to insurrection

Senate acquits former President Trump on impeachment charges related to insurrection

This weekend, Former President Trump faced his second impeachment trial that was in regards to the insurrection in January. Ultimately, it ended with seven Republicans joining Democrats in the vote to convict Trump. However, the 57 “guilty” and 43 “not guilty” tally fell short of the two-thirds supermajority needed. Tennessee Republican Senators Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty each voted “not guilty”, while calling into question the “constitutionality” of the trial. Read their statements below. The House Impeachment Managers launched an unconstitutional show trial to humiliate the former President and his supporters. The Impeachment Managers have accomplished nothing but to extend the pain of the American people. They achieved one thing – Donald J. Trump’s acquittal. — Sen. Marsha Blackburn (@MarshaBlackburn) February 13, 2021 This impeachment charade is a waste of time, money and does NOTHING to help American families. — Bill Hagerty (@BillHagertyTN) February 12, 2021 President Joe Biden issued a statement following the acquittal: “The Senate vote followed the bipartisan vote to impeach him by the House of Representatives. While the final vote did not lead to a conviction, the substance of the charge is not in dispute. Even those opposed to the conviction, like Senate Minority Leader McConnell, believe Donald Trump was guilty of a ‘disgraceful dereliction of duty’ and ‘practically and morally responsible for provoking’ the violence unleashed on the Capitol.” PREVIOUS: The impeachment trial for former president Donald J. Trump began Tuesday morning. Trump became the first-ever president to be impeached twice when the House of Representatives voted on Jan. 13 to charge him for “incitement of insurrection”. The vote passed 232-197. Now, the trial has...
Late goal from Wood seals Lipscomb win over ETSU

Late goal from Wood seals Lipscomb win over ETSU

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb men’s soccer team earned an enthralling 2-1 win over the East Tennessee State Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon. The afternoon was a chilly one, as flutters of snow fell at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex as a backdrop to a fiery matchup. The ETSU Bucs traveled from Johnson City with only victory in mind, but Ryan Dougherty quickly set the visitors back a peg. The junior midfielder from Pennsylvania put away a free kick after just six minutes to give Lipscomb their third game-opening goal in their first three matches. Dougherty’s unassisted goal was his first of the season. ETSU responded well, but a stout defensive line from Lipscomb kept the Bucs out of the net until 30 minutes in, when senior defender Austin Bilhmeyer set up senior forward Jared Leheta for the equalizer. The Montreal man put ETSU back on level terms, a scoreline that would hold for the rest of the half. It was a clean first half, but the yellow cards came out in droves from the onset of the second half. Within just 18 seconds, South African junior midfielder Luto Tom received the game’s first disciplinary action, the first of four yellow cards over the course of the game for the Bucs. Meanwhile, Lipscomb accrued three yellows via sophomore defensive midfielder Thomas Priest, sophomore attacking midfielder Alejandro Lopez, and freshman forward Javanne Smith, last week’s recipient of two National Player of the Week honors. Outside of fouls, it was a less eventful second half of play, with one exception being a long-range effort from Lopez. The Costa Rican nearly gave Lipscomb a second...
Lipscomb women outmatch Jacksonville to remain unbeaten at home

Lipscomb women outmatch Jacksonville to remain unbeaten at home

Coming into Saturday afternoon, Lipscomb’s women’s basketball team had not won three straight conference games since the 2017-18 season. Come to think of it, Lipscomb hadn’t won more than four conference games in a season since that year. That all changed Saturday afternoon, as the Lady Bisons took down a floundering, bottom-feeding Jacksonville squad 66-55 and improved to 8-0 at home this season. Lipscomb is now 8-7 and 5-4 in the conference, a marked difference from a squad that has won six total conference games the past two seasons combined. The final scoreline was deceptive, as Lipscomb dominated defensively until late in the game. The Lady Bisons held leads as large as 24 on Saturday afternoon. Redshirt junior center Dorie Harrison dialed in 18 points to lead the way for the Lady Bisons, while redshirt junior guard Sydney Shelton and senior forward Taylor Clark had 10 points apiece. Shelton had a team-high nine rebounds. Jacksonville’s Makayla Edwards brought in 18 points, but Jacksonville struggled to produce any significant offensive output until a 12-2 run to close the game in garbage time. To make matters worse, the Dolphins (3-11, 1-8 ASUN) went 9-of-21 from the free throw line. Much like Lipscomb’s previous game against Stetson, it took a minute for the Lady Bisons to get on the board. But with 6:19 left in the first quarter and Lipscomb down 5-0, the Lady Bisons went on an 8-0 run. Jacksonville tied the game at 11 less than two minutes into the second quarter on a three-ball from Ashley Malone, a freshman guard and local of Nashville. That scoreline would be the...

Lipscomb School of Music hosts first Friday concert in Beaman Library

Lipscomb University School of Music held its first Friday concert in Beaman library last week, with performances from the piano, cello, and violoncello performance majors. Bethany Churino, the mother of classical piano major Journey Thouin, traveled to Lipscomb University to watch her son play. “It’s amazing. I can’t believe it, as a mother, to watch your child play like that,” she said with a smile. “It is obviously a gift that I am thankful for. Just to know that he is doing something that he loves and is passionate about and that it makes him happy, I love to see.” Another piano performance major, Justin Alcorn, who also performed at the concert, expressed his passion for his studies. “Music is very much an emotional thing,” he said. “dMy teacher told me musicians are their own therapists. They get to get their feelings out in ways that other people don’t have the opportunity to. That’s what I love about music.”  The next concert will be held Friday, March 5 in the Beaman library. Attendance will be limited to 25...
Lipscomb Softball returns to the diamond on Friday to open 2021 season

Lipscomb Softball returns to the diamond on Friday to open 2021 season

A normal start date is about the only normal thing for the 2021 Lipscomb University softball team. After having their season cut short one year ago, Coach Ryman and her players have had to adjust to a totally different world filled with new COVID restrictions and obstacles to playing the sport they love. “If I would have guessed last year mid-March when all this started initially, I would have thought we would have been done for a couple of weeks, and then they would try to pick back up with things,” said head coach Kristin Ryman. “No one ever envisioned it would be what it has turned into with the pandemic.” The pandemic has wreaked havoc on all facets of life forcing everyone to reshape their outlook on life. “Every day we are out here is a good day,” said Ryman. “Let’s practice that way, let’s enjoy what we do, let’s get to know each other, and take every day as a blessing right now. That’s the biggest thing, but knowing too preparation-wise at a moment’s notice someone could go down and not be a starter anymore. So, for all of the other girls that are working really hard behind them, [they need to be] working every day as if they could be the starter every day.” Although Covid caused many problems for the Lady Bisons, the shortened 2020 season did allow their young roster to mature by getting real game experience that did not count against their collegiate eligibility. “I think a lot of those girls got some key time last year and in a sense looking back...
