Reducing plastic on college campuses has been a hot topic in Nashville ever since Vanderbilt completely eliminated single-use plastic on campus earlier this fall. So what is Lipscomb doing to eliminate plastic on campus? “To my knowledge at this point in time there really isn’t any initiative from the campus side or from the dining services side to try to work through eliminating or reducing plastic,” says Director of Dining Services, Wolcott Fairy. “At Vanderbilt, the initiative was driven primarily by the student groups. So as I was reading the article I could see that the students lobbied to the university, and the leadership groups, and was able to have them move into a direction that started with water bottles.” In the past, when students have tried to start initiatives they are quickly turned down. “In the past, the university did have recycling, but in the past couple of years those had been taken away,” says student Hannah Owens. “So one of my good friends and I reached out to an organization on campus to see if recycling could be brought back and to see why it was taken off-campus. They said no other part of the school was supporting recycling and it was too expensive for them. Sparked by Lady Bisons’ turnovers, the visiting Murray State Racers staged a late-game comeback to walk away with a 67-57 victory in a game that has Lipscomb coach Lauren Sumski perplexed. After holding the edge in the turnover battle in the first half, Lipscomb allowed 15 second-half turnovers while Murray State only allowed three. “We are better than that,” Sumski said after the Tuesday loss. “We are better than giving up 19 and 25 points in the third and fourth quarter.” Despite the fact that the Lady Bisons were unable to hit a three-point shot until late in the second quarter, it was Lipscomb that jumped out to an eight-point early in the game. Going into the halftime break, Sumski and her team still held a six-point lead, led by sophomore guard Jane Deason’s seven points and sophomore center Dorie Harrison’s six points. Entering the second half, the Lady Bisons extended their lead to 10 before four consecutive turnovers cut the lead to three. “They made a lot of the shots that we gave them from poor communication and poor transition,” Sumski said. The Racers took advantage of these missed opportunities from the Bisons and went on 25-9 run to close out the game behind sophomore guard Macey Turley’s 20 points and freshman forward Macie Gibson’s 19 points. “We are better than that defensively,” Sumski said. “But tonight I felt like they beat us to 50-50 balls, and they turned it on when it mattered. Carleigh Short hit a second chance three with 12.8 seconds on the clock to tie the home opening game ultimately resulting in a 71-69 victory for the Lady Bisons against Northern Kentucky in Head Coach Lauren Sumski’s home debut. “She’s [Carleigh] been a big shot maker her entire career,” said Sumski. “We knew we wanted to get her a look, this was a play we put in earlier that they executed really well so I was really excited for her to knock down that shot.” After Short’s game-tying three, redshirt-sophomore Dorie Harrison sunk a pair of free throws to win the game “We completely trusted Dorie,” said Carleigh Short. “We knew she was gonna hit both of them, so in our minds, we were just saying, ‘nothing long’ because we knew they couldn’t get a layup they had to throw it long and so Dorie stepped up big and got the win for us.” To read the full story by Mckenzi Harris click here. What started as a double-digit lead turned into a difficult 79-78 loss for the Bisons against the TSU Tigers on Tuesday night. After an almost-comeback for the Bisons led by KJ Johnson, the Tigers took off with a quick drive to win the game. During the first half, Lipscomb led by as many as 11 points, a quick and promising lead on the Tigers. The team struggled without Ahsan Asadullah on the court. The Bisons ran the offense through senior Michael Buckland. Buckland scored a season-high of 14 points. However, the struggles didn’t show much until the second half. Tennessee State opened the second half with a 15-6 run and a three, putting them ahead 55-50. As the half continued, the Tigers flipped the game and held a lead, putting the Bisons 12 points behind with three minutes left on the clock. That’s when freshman KJ Johnson took the game back over, at least temporarily. Johnson drove a shot in from the left-wing, banking a shot off the window with seven seconds remaining on the clock. Johnson’s shot to put the Bisons back on top 78-77. TSU’s Michael Littlejohn then drove the ball the length of the floor, putting the Tigers back in the lead, 79-78 with 0.1 seconds remaining. In the first road game of the season, the Bisons shot 50 percent from the floor, 27 of 54 attempts, and hit 17 for 12 in free throws, a 71 percent clip. Lipscomb’s Pick and Roll rock band is bringing a new type of pep to Bisons basketball games. The band, which will play at every home game this season, consists only of Lipscomb students and faculty. It was sprung by a professor, Steve Taylor, who was disappointed by the lack of any musical boost for the home team during a game last season against Liberty. “Liberty had brought their own band to the game and Lipscomb did not have a band — and that upset him that we had such a strong music department and a strong basketball team and the two had not some together to work a lot,” said John Painter, who Taylor contacted to get a plan in the works.
