Lipscomb improves to 7-1 in ASUN play with sweep over UNA

Lipscomb improves to 7-1 in ASUN play with sweep over UNA

Four straight sweeps, a combined score of 22-4 in set victories against ASUN opponents and a stacked roster with talented players across all academic classifications. That’s the story this season for the Lady Bisons, highlighted by a 3-0 blanketing over North Alabama in Allen Arena on Wednesday night. Lipscomb is now 10-2 on the season and 7-1 in conference play, while UNA drops to 1-8 (1-7 ASUN). Senior Megan Kuper led the way for the Bisons with 14 kills in Allen Arena, while four Lions tied at the team lead with four. Lipscomb set the tone early with a 4-0 lead in the first set and was aided by runs of 7-0, 4-0 and 5-0 to take the first installment 25-10. It seemed like UNA was unable to put up a fight, but the Lions caused trouble for the Bisons in the second set, taking an 8-4 lead off a bad set from Lipscomb freshman Delaney Smith. A 5-0 run from Lipscomb gave the Bisons the lead before both teams settled on trading leads. While ahead 14-13, Lipscomb ran away with a 6-0 run, capped by a Kuper kill. Lipscomb won the second set 25-17. UNA led the final set 8-2 before Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal called a timeout. Lipscomb broke away with a 12-0 run after that and ended up outscoring the Lions 23-5 after the early deficit, winning the final segment 25-13. Breakout night from freshman Will Pruit aids Lipscomb basketball in win over Kennesaw State

Breakout night from freshman Will Pruit aids Lipscomb basketball in win over Kennesaw State

For the second time this season, Lipscomb men’s basketball has swept a conference opponent. Much like Friday night, the Bisons used a strong second-half performance to take down ASUN bottomfeeder Kennesaw State 77-63 in Allen Arena. Lipscomb is 15-10 and 9-5 in the ASUN and sitting at third place, while Kennesaw State has already clinched the No. 9 seed and will participate in a play-in game in the ASUN tourney. Four Bisons dialed in double-figure nights, with graduate transfer Romeao Ferguson leading the herd with 24. Sophomore guard KJ Johnson scored 20, freshman guard Will Pruitt had 18 (a career-high), and redshirt-junior center Ahsan Asadullah posted 12. Pruitt’s performance was most notable. A local 6-3 guard out of Mount Juliet, Pruitt was making his second consecutive start and just his third overall this season. Don’t be surprised if the Bisons keep him there, as he cashed in on the opportunity by going 6-of-7 and 5-of-6 from range while leading the team with seven rebounds. The Owls’ top two scorers this season were their top two scorers Saturday night. Leading scorer and junior guard Spencer Rodgers led the way with 21, and second-leading scorer and freshman guard Chris Youngblood followed suit with 12. Nobody else cashed in double digit points. Offensively, Lipscomb played a dismal first half. Lipscomb led 12-6 with 15:50 left in the first half before giving up a 14-2 run that lasted for over nine minutes. The Bisons did not score a field goal during that run and were down 20-14, eventually ending the first half down 31-29. But much like Friday night, Lipscomb broke away in...
Lipscomb women outmatch Jacksonville to remain unbeaten at home

Lipscomb women outmatch Jacksonville to remain unbeaten at home

Coming into Saturday afternoon, Lipscomb’s women’s basketball team had not won three straight conference games since the 2017-18 season. Come to think of it, Lipscomb hadn’t won more than four conference games in a season since that year. That all changed Saturday afternoon, as the Lady Bisons took down a floundering, bottom-feeding Jacksonville squad 66-55 and improved to 8-0 at home this season. Lipscomb is now 8-7 and 5-4 in the conference, a marked difference from a squad that has won six total conference games the past two seasons combined. The final scoreline was deceptive, as Lipscomb dominated defensively until late in the game. The Lady Bisons held leads as large as 24 on Saturday afternoon. Redshirt junior center Dorie Harrison dialed in 18 points to lead the way for the Lady Bisons, while redshirt junior guard Sydney Shelton and senior forward Taylor Clark had 10 points apiece. Shelton had a team-high nine rebounds. Jacksonville’s Makayla Edwards brought in 18 points, but Jacksonville struggled to produce any significant offensive output until a 12-2 run to close the game in garbage time. To make matters worse, the Dolphins (3-11, 1-8 ASUN) went 9-of-21 from the free throw line. Much like Lipscomb’s previous game against Stetson, it took a minute for the Lady Bisons to get on the board. But with 6:19 left in the first quarter and Lipscomb down 5-0, the Lady Bisons went on an 8-0 run. Jacksonville tied the game at 11 less than two minutes into the second quarter on a three-ball from Ashley Malone, a freshman guard and local of Nashville. That scoreline would be the...
Women’s basketball beats Stetson, sweeps the Hatters for the first time since 2007

Women’s basketball beats Stetson, sweeps the Hatters for the first time since 2007

Stetson’s women’s basketball program has historically been a thorn in Lipscomb’s side. The Hatters beat the Lady Bisons 17 straight games from 2011-2019 and had only lost to Lipscomb six times before 2019. But in Lauren Sumski’s second season as head coach of the Lady Bisons, Lipscomb has completed its second-ever sweep over Stetson after a commanding 66-54 win over the Hatters on Super Bowl Sunday and a close win Saturday afternoon. Lipscomb is now 7-7 and 4-4 in the ASUN, while Stetson drops to 4-9 and 2-6 in the ASUN. The Hatters have had three players opt-out during the season, including two players who had been combining for over 20 points per game. Freshman guard Jordan Peete built on an impressive Saturday performance with a team-leading 13 points Sunday afternoon, finishing the weekend with 28 total points. Junior guards Yazz Wazeerud-Din and Maria Visone scored 22 and 11 for Stetson, but the Hatters finished 8-of-35 from downtown and just 34 percent overall on field goals. Lipscomb started the game without scoring for over six minutes and was down 13-0 before going on an 11-0 run in the final 3:48 of the first quarter. Both teams stayed pretty even to start the second quarter and even traded leads. Stetson was up 25-24 with 3:54 left in the second, but that would be the last lead the Hatters would have for the rest of the game. Peete knocked down a triple, and Lipscomb ended the first half on a 16-0 run. Lipscomb held a 51-31 advantage with 5:48 to go in the third quarter after a three-pointer from junior guard Jane...
Lipscomb defeats Bluefield State in a late addition to the schedule as ASUN games are postponed

Lipscomb defeats Bluefield State in a late addition to the schedule as ASUN games are postponed

Lipscomb’s men’s basketball team was supposed to play at Stetson this weekend, but since the Bisons had played more conference games than most of their ASUN opponents, the conference announced Lipscomb would get a bye week to allow other teams to fill in the gap. Luckily, Lipscomb was able to snag a non-conference opponent in Bluefield State, a Division II independent out of West Virginia, for a Saturday matinee game. The Bisons used 41 bench points and limited the Big Blue to just 21 second-half points to win 89-56. “First off, we’re real [sic] thankful for Bluefield agreeing to come in and play,” Lipscomb head coach Lennie Acuff said during a postgame interview on ESPN+. “We found out Tuesday afternoon that we weren’t gonna be going to Florida.” Redshirt junior center Ahsan Asadullah paced Lipscomb (11-8, 5-3 ASUN) with 19 points, followed by 13 from sophomore guard KJ Johnson and 11 from sophomore guard Carson Cary. Junior Marquez Cooper and sophomore Taj-Maal Toney dialed in 13 apiece for Bluefield State (1-4), while junior guard Brandon Anyanwu had 11. The bench only contributed seven points for the Big Blue, who were without the top rebounder in Division II Alex Nunnely due to injury. “I thought our bench did a really good job, and I was really excited to see those guys get a chance,” Acuff said. “Cause they’ve played well in practice. I’m not surprised by how well all those guys played.” Lipscomb had a sluggish start and was down 15-7 at the 14:41 mark and then 27-19 with under seven minutes left in the first half. But Bluefield State could only...
