For the past four years, I’ve run a travel blog on my own, but now I feel it is time to share my love for traveling with the community surrounding my home, Nashville and Lipscomb University. Every other week I am planning to share a location that’s not too far from Lipscomb and makes for a perfect-length weekend or day trip. This being a long weekend for students, I have picked a destination that’s a bit farther from Lipscomb, but still a perfect day trip. This week I would like to introduce, The Obed. The Obed National Park is located in Wartburg, Tennessee, a little under two hours from Gatlinburg. I had never heard of the park until a friend of mine shared a post on Instagram of a stunning view in the park. Obed is known most for its challenging whitewater rafting, rock climbing, camping and hiking trails. There are several trails at the park, including Lilly Bluff Trail, Emory River Nature Trail, Point Trail and the Cumberland Trail. Lilly Bluff is an overlook point of the Cumberland River Gorge, and the overlook trail takes you right to it. The overlook trail is only 0.3-miles long. This next trail is my favorite and is called The Point Trail; it is a 3.8-mile round trip trail and a moderate to strenuous hike with climbing and the crossing of creeks. The Point Trail dips down into Melton Mill Branch and involves a moderate amount of easy climbing. Point Trail contains many turns and a beautiful scenic overlook of the gorge as well. The Bridge Trail is 0.5-mileslong and crosses the river through...

Larry the Cucumber was among the voices celebrating Lipscomb University’s 129th year at the August 27 President’s Convocation, during which both new parking plans and facilities were heralded. This ceremony included the faculty and students from both Lipscomb Academy and Lipscomb University. Convocation started with the procession of flags representing the diverse culture of the student body and faculty. In the parade, 98 flags were displayed representing 55 nations and 43 states from across the world. Generous donors, who have given millions to help Lipscomb grow into an even bigger family, followed the flags. An example of the generosity: The AM Burton Society has given $2.5 million in scholarship. That group was followed by The Nashville Pipes bagpipe trio which led the board of trustees, leadership team, and the president of Lipscomb, Randy Lowry, and wife, Rhonda, into the ceremony. Soon after, the student body was led in song, before Chelsia Harris, the executive director of nursing gave, told students to pursue this academic year with perseverance and prayer. A familiar cucumber then took over as Mike Nawrocki, who voices Veggie Tales’ Larry the cucumber, and the visiting professor of cinematic arts took to the stage. He told his story of pursuing medical school, only to strike up success with Veggie Tales and Big Idea Entertainment and Production. He said Lipscomb students should to expect the unexpected and listen if God calls them outside their comfort zones As the convocation was nearing the end, Lowry introduced singer/songwriter Ellie Holcomb, who shared her story and award-winning song, “Red Sea Road.” Lowry then announced there would be a new parking garage...

As we finish up this first week of school, I thought it would be a good idea to give some advice and shed some light on current trends. I hope these current pieces will help you be back to school in style and get you back into the swing of things. Everyone knows that Birkenstocks are super popular right now, but we’re all on a budget with trying to cover the costs of tuition, extracurriculars and fun with friends. There are lots of stores that sell knock-off Birks, which will let you be part of the fad without breaking the bank. Target has a wide selection, including multiple prints, which I think are really fun. Shoe Department will also have a variety for a fraction of the price of actual Birks. If you’re like me and wear a women’s size 8 or smaller, you can fit into kids shoes. Try a size 5 or 6 in kids sizes for a cheaper price than adult sizes will be. The Children’s Place not only sells the traditional brown, double-strap sandals but also holographic ones if you want to be super unique. By this time, I’m sure that their summer stuff will be on sale soon, so you’ll be able to get them pretty cheap. If you aren’t into Birks, maybe you’re a fan of the current platform wedge sandals that everyone’s wearing. Steve Madden sells them for around $80, but multiple stores have joined the trend and provide cheaper alternatives. Target, Tilly’s and Nordstrom Rack all have shoes that look just like the Steve Madden ones but at a lower price point....

Although the Fall semester has just begun, Lipscomb students are holding on to summer until the end. Lipscomb’s Student Activities Board hosted their annual Lipscomb Luau on Friday afternoon to kick off this year’s activities. The Luau featured upbeat Hawaiian music and a beach volleyball tournament in the sandpit behind Elam Hall. No matter the competition level, students put together their best players and registered in teams of four. Each team was also encouraged to create crazy team names and matching uniforms, with “Sandy Cheeks”, “The Hobbits”, and “Fake Tan Squad” being the standouts. This year, the sand volleyball tournament was almost postponed due to rain, but the cloud coverage didn’t put a damper on the fun. “We just wanted to throw a fun event for new freshman on campus that makes the first weekend of college not as scary,” SAB member Madison Wonders said. “We want people to continue to meet each other, whether they’re playing volleyball or not, to come and grow the community.” Students were offered grilled chicken, pineapple, and Hawaiian Punch as refreshments throughout the match. The tournament ended full of smiles, laughter, and some friendly competition. The winners, Team Memphis Tiger Basketball Fan Club, received bragging rights and their picture on the SAB Instagram. The women’s soccer team defeated Belmont, 2-1, Sunday in a rain-spattered Battle of the Boulevard. “It was a really tight game. You never know in women’s soccer how the ball is going to bounce,” said Bisons coach Kevin O’Brien. “I’m really proud of the response that they dug deep and kept going and going and going and persevered against the most organized and athletic Belmont team I have seen in the past five or six years.” The first half started slowly, with neither team able to find the back of the net while Lipscomb took eight shots to one from Belmont. “I’m happy that we continue to create good goal-scoring chances,” said O’Brien noting the failed shots. “We have to continue to work on our finishing, so we can maybe convert more of our chances. “I feel like in preseason we were flying, so we have to pick that back up and figure out ultimately why aren’t we maybe as efficient as we had been.” The second half picked up when Belmont’s Paige Hewitt scored in the 53rd minute, but the Bisons dug deep and fought back. “We had a decent amount of possession, and we were creating good chances,” said O’Brien, adding “… when you get slugged in the face and you’re not expecting it, you have to respond. It’s fight or flight. We are either going to put our head between our tails and walk away or we are going to answer the call.” Olivia Doak answered that call in the 74th minute by scoring a goal and tying the game. The goal was assisted by Maycie...

Public Square Park was packed with natives and tourist Thursday night as the Lightning 100 hosted mainstream artist, Mat Kearney and Johnnyswim. Mat Kearney is a former Nashville resident and a former roommate to Abner Ramirez of Johnnyswim. The two share a fun history. Mat Kearney introduced Abner Ramirez to his wife and the other half of Johnnyswim, Amanda Sudano. Johnnyswim performed the spring concert at Lipscomb last semester as well. Two other local artists performed on Thursday night, Will Hope and Amanda Shires each played short sets before Kearney and Johnnyswim. « ‹ of 5 ›...
