Lipscomb came off of a split last weekend with UNF and looked poised to bounce back against the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, but the Bisons were unable to stop the Eagles who outplayed Lipscomb in the second half and won by a score of 79-69. With an 11-0 run to start off the game for Lipscomb, things looked optimistic in the first half. However, from there, FGCU went on a 19-4 scoring run that had them up midway through the first half by four. The Bisons managed to claw their way back towards the end of the half with a three-pointer from sophomore guard KJ Johnson, free throws from senior guard Romeao Ferguson and hustle plays from senior forward Parker Hazen. With the late surge in the first half, Lipscomb found themselves ahead 36-32 going into the halftime break. With a fairly even first half from the conference foes, the question was who would pull ahead in the second half. As Lipscomb has been struggling to hold leads in recent matchups, the Bisons were hoping to break the trend with some reliable defense for the second half. Out of the gates, things were neck and neck. Both teams battled for the lead, but once the Eagles took the lead with 12:36 in the second half, they wouldn’t look back. The Lady Bisons started with a lead but lost it to Liberty right before halftime eventually costing them the game 70 to 79 on senior day. “We were expecting to compete,” said head coach Lauren Sumski. “We were expecting to play a little bit smarter in the sense of taking care of the ball, but everything else was about what we expected. I thought our young ladies shot the ball well and played hard.” Even trailing late in the fourth quarter, the Lady Bisons fought until the end. Casey Collier fouled out with 1:04 left in the 4th quarter. And the team was fouling back and forth from 1:04 to the end. “At the end, were just a team that doesn’t quit and just tries to find opportunities,” said Sumski. The Bisons scored at least 20 in the first, third, and fourth quarters, but only seven in the second quarter. The Liberty Flames gained their lead in the middle of the second quarter and the Bisons didn’t gain their lead back after that. Carleigh Short was injured during the game and walked off the court. “I just know she got hurt and walked off the court,” said Sumski. “Carleigh is probably my physically and mentally toughest player so I knew when she walked off the court, she was done. So I’m gonna see what we can do to get her back by this weekend.” The Lady Bisons finished the regular season with a record of 7-22 (4-12) including this loss and Liberty improves to 17-11 (10-5). The FGCU Eagles continued their conference winning streak, defeating the Lady Bisons 78-45 in Allen Arena Saturday afternoon for their 40th consecutive ASUN victory. With this win, the Eagles also secured at least a share of the ASUN regular-season championship and home-court advantage for the ASUN tournament. Despite the score, Lipscomb led for much of the first half, giving FGCU their first double-digit deficit in conference play this season, when the Lady Bisons were able to take a 17-5 lead with a minute left in the first quarter. Freshman guard Casey Collier stepped up with 12 of Lipscomb’s 29 first-half points. But beginning in the second quarter and continuing into the second half, FGCU flexed their muscles and put together a 45-point turnaround. Leading the Eagles to this masterful comeback performance was Eagles junior forward Tytionia Adderly, who finished the afternoon with 28 points, including seven three-pointers, and eight rebounds in only 28 minutes. For Lipscomb, Collier was the leading scorer with her 14 points, followed closely by junior forward Taylor Clark who put up 11 points. However, noticeably quiet in the scorers’ column for the Lady Bisons was freshman guard Jalyn Holcomb, who has not only led Lipscomb in scoring but is also the leading freshman scorer in the conference. Holcomb scored only six points and was 1-6 from the field, as the Eagles’ experienced upperclassmen domineered on defense. The Lipscomb Bisons defeated the FGCU Eagles 64-54 on Thursday night. Also in Allen Arena the Bisons made sure the Star Wars Night tradition continued and Garrison Mathews’ returned to Lipscomb. Tonight was Greg Jones’s night. The sophomore dropped 24 points, a career-high, including four three-pointers. “I’m proud of [Jones],” said Bisons Head Coach Lennie Acuff. “He didn’t get off to a great start, but the boy sure has rallied; he’s stayed the course and is seeing the fruit of it.” Ahsan Asadullah recorded his eleventh double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Miles Miller also was in double figures for the Bisons with 11 points. “We run offense through Ahsan,” said Acuff. “He’s having an unbelievable year – I think he should be the player of the year in the league.” Lipscomb started the game down 8-2 but scored the game’s next 13 points to take the lead. The Bisons went into halftime ahead 32-21 and never looked back. The key to the Bisons success was the defense. Lipscomb stole the ball 10 times, and Michael Buckland recorded a block. “We guarded well,” Acuff said. “We’ve continued to improve as a defensive team, and that’s important for us.” A poor shooting night for FGCU made matters worse for the team. The Eagles shot 20-53, including 9-26 from the three-point range. This led to several scoring droughts of two or more minutes throughout both halves for the Eagles. Sunday afternoon, with temperatures rising to nearly 100 degrees, the Lipscomb Lady Bisons faced off against fellow ASUN women’s soccer powerhouse the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles in their second conference game of the year. Neither team was ever able to fully gain control of the match as play stretched into overtime and then double overtime, where the final result was a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of play. The Eagles seemed to take control of the game in the 15th minute when senior midfielder Marjorie Boilesen put the ball in the back of the net off of sophomore midfielder Ashlee Brentlinger’s assist, but sophomore midfielder Kristi Jones was able to respond shortly before halftime for the Bisons leveling the score once again. Entering the second half, it was clear to see why these two teams were ranked first and second in the preseason ASUN poll, as impenetrable defense and smart possession fought through the heat to keep both teams scoreless for the final 45 minutes of regulation. Lipscomb was able to do this by keeping FGCU’s all-American senior forward Evdokia Popadinova quiet. “We highlighted two players, 17 [senior forward Evdokia Popadinova] and 25 [senior midfielder Marjorie Boilesen]; 25 got the goal so we didn’t do quite exactly as we game-planned, but they are super talented,” Lipscomb’s head coach O’Brien said. “As far as shutting down Evie [Popadinova], our defenders knew that those two were their primary point-getters, the ones that lead their team in all the offensive statistical categories.
