It’s almost spring, which can only mean one thing: it’s time for the Grammy Awards! I know some don’t care that much about award shows, but I’m a music enthusiast, and I love to see my favorite artists perform and be recognized for the amazing work they have done in the past year. For you sports people, I’d say this is the musical equivalent of March Madness. Of course, awards are not the only indicator of success, and there are certainly plenty of artists every year who are snubbed (most notably The Weeknd this year), but it is fun to watch regardless. For each category included, I’ll list all of the nominees and then my picks for who will win and who should win. For some of these categories, the award goes to the producer or writer as well as or instead of the artist. For sake of ease, I have only listed the artist, but you can check out the full details on the Grammy Awards website. Without further ado, here are my predictions for the 2021 Grammy Awards. Record of the Year “Black Parade” – Beyoncé “Colors” – Black Pumas “Rockstar” – DeBaby featuring Roddy Rich “Say So” – Doja Cat “Everything I Wanted” – Billie Eilish “Don’t Start Now” – Dua Lipa “Circles” – Post Malone “Savage” – Megan Thee Stallion featuring Beyoncé Who will win: I think there are a few ways this could go, but I think Beyoncé’s timely “Black Parade” probably has the best chance of winning. Five Netflix Films to Stream during your Snow Days Coming off Valentine’s Day, this list should continue your Valentine’s Day mood. With COVID-19 many people’s options for how they spent Valentine’s Day were limited. And now that the Nashville area is locked inside because of the snow it’s the perfect time to catch up on Valentines Day themes movie you might have missed. Whether you’re spending your snow days with your partner, your friends, or all by your lonesome, here are five Netflix films that will help you enjoy the snow days. As they get swept up in the romance, the lovers realize that adjusting to each other’s lifestyles is harder than they initially thought. Always Be My Maybe is flawless with its characters, pleasing with its story, and positively witty with its jokes. The film will leave you with a smile on your face long after the credits roll. Lipscomb University School of Music held its first Friday concert in Beaman library last week, with performances from the piano, cello, and violoncello performance majors. Bethany Churino, the mother of classical piano major Journey Thouin, traveled to Lipscomb University to watch her son play. “It’s amazing. I can’t believe it, as a mother, to watch your child play like that,” she said with a smile. “It is obviously a gift that I am thankful for. Just to know that he is doing something that he loves and is passionate about and that it makes him happy, I love to see.” Another piano performance major, Justin Alcorn, who also performed at the concert, expressed his passion for his studies. “Music is very much an emotional thing,” he said. “dMy teacher told me musicians are their own therapists. They get to get their feelings out in ways that other people don’t have the opportunity to. That’s what I love about music.” The next concert will be held Friday, March 5 in the Beaman library. There are many different aspects of life that define an era’s culture. No matter if it is political unrest or a new musical genre, there’s a strong tie between social trends and their entertainment. It’s pretty easy to decipher what has shaped the culture of 2020. In fact, “quarantine culture” has become a coined term for the viral elements of the internet that appeared while everyone spent months at home. Though quarantine culture has become a blanket term for the iconic games, movies and memes that emerged this past year, it has definitely been dominated by the shows on Netflix that people have been binge-watching to pass the time. Given that, here are some of the top Netflix shows that got many of us through a very strange year: 9. Tiger King It’s pretty indisputable that Tiger King was one of the first defining moments of quarantine culture. Tiger King is a documentary-style series about Joe Exotic. The show focuses on the big cats that he owns and his rivalry with Carole Baskin (surely you’ve seen what the internet has to say). It’s the show to watch if you want an inside look at a life you might not have another chance to see or if you just don’t want to feel left out when everyone else talks about it. 8. Cobra Kai This show caught the attention of many on Netflix during quarantine. They say lightning never strikes the same place twice, but for Taylor Swift, it most certainly does. A mere five months after releasing her critically acclaimed surprise album folklore, Taylor Swift returned with another surprise album, evermore. Much like folklore, evermore was created in collaboration with Jack Antonoff, Aaron Dessner of the band The National and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. Additional writing on both albums is credited to William Bowery, which was revealed to be a pseudonym for Swift’s boyfriend, actor Joe Alwyn. The album is a continuation of many of the themes and musical styles featured prominently on folklore. Standout Tracks: “champagne problems” Like many of the songs on evermore, “champagne problems” sees Swift craft an intricate fictional narrative rather than recount a personal experience. This piano-driven track takes on the perspective of a character who has just rejected a proposal and laments all of the hurt this has inevitably caused their former partner, despite believing it best in the long run. I love the way that the lyrics of the last chorus change to explain all of the ways that someone else will succeed in all of the places the narrator failed. Taylor Swift’s writing is often most effective in the simplest form, led by just guitar or piano, and “champagne problems” is no exception. I have seen others compare this song to Swift’s fan-favorite track “All Too Well,” but it reminds me more of the piano ballad “New Year’s Day” off of her 2017 album reputation. While Covid is on the rise and traveling is discouraged, the campus is closed and that means most students have to commute home. Whether you are driving to visit family or flying back home, a good holiday commute should be filled with music, podcasts and movies. I grew up in a Christmas fanatic family. We are most easily comparable to the Griswolds and there is no denying it. Our yard stays filled with lights till the end of January and the Christmas season begins before thanksgiving — sometimes even before Halloween. All that said, I would consider myself somewhat of an expert in holiday music and movies. We can start with music. Here are my top favorite songs for the Christmas season this year.
