Bisons point guard Nathan Moran, who has not played in a game this year, plans to redshirt the season to focus on “trying to get my full speed and strength back,” he told Lumination Network in a text message. Coach Casey Alexander said Moran was healthy enough to return, but wouldn’t play “unless something changes” in his recovery or team circumstances. “It’s been slower than normal,” Alexander said. “It’s all health-related.” In college athletics, a player choosing to redshirt saves a year of eligibility, but forfeits the additional year of eligibility if they enter a game during the redshirt season. Moran started every game of the 2016-17 season,, averaged 11.1 points per game and was second in the A-SUN with 4.2 assists per game last year. The team’s leading shooter, he made 90 three-pointers at a 41.7% clip. He finished the year with a torn labrum in each hip and underwent surgeries in April and June. The senior said he made the decision to redshirt the season after Lipscomb swept crosstown rival Belmont in December. He returned to practice on Jan. 5. Feeling super thankful and lucky to be able to practice this week for the first time in over 9 months! GOD IS SOOOOO GOOD!!! — Nathan Moran (@nate5_moran) January 10, 2018 The 11-5 Bisons play their second conference game on the road at North Florida (6-12) tonight at 6:00 PM. Lipscomb is 5-5 on the road and opened the A-SUN slate with a win at Kennesaw State Saturday. The Ospreys, led by sophomore guard Ivan Gandia-Rosa, are 5-1 at home. The last time Lipscomb played North Florida, junior guard...

Four students on the hiring committee announced at the Gathering Tuesday that the University is hiring Prentice Ashford to head the Office of Intercultural Development (OID) after a seven-month search. Ashford is an alumnus of Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, and the former director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs there. “I’m excited to join this family,” Ashford said on stage at The Gathering. The hiring committee said he was chosen from a pool of close to 100 applicants. Each interviewed with African-American students, staff and administrators. “Prentice not only connected very well with our students, but he also connected well with faculty and administration,” hiring committee member Deion Sims told Lumination Network in a text message. “I think that, more than anything else, will allow him to be successful in his role as the head of our Office of Intercultural Development.” The OID is designed to give minorities on campus a voice regarding student affairs. It includes the coordinators of African-American Student Services, International Student Services and other student minority groups. The Black Student Union and Futuro, among other groups, are under the umbrella of the office. Lisa Steele, the current head of OID, is moving into a different role in the Student Life office. The University has not had a permanent head of African American Services since Paulette Cathey stepped down in mid-2017. The hire comes a semester after the racially charged cotton-centerpiece controversy that took place at President Randy Lowry’s home in...

The event check-in software, Teal Pass, is no longer being used by Campus Ministry for easy check-ins to The Gathering chapel. The ticketing software, a Nashville startup, was introduced at the beginning of the fall semester and suffered a few hiccups. Now it’s being discarded in favor of the original scanning method. “Until a system and a program is tested and in place, we are going back to the old system,” campus minister Cyrus Eaton said. Lipscomb University was one of the early adopters of the technology. “Ultimately it’s a great idea but it’s not ready,” Eaton added. Some students took advantage of the software to check in to chapel without actually attending. For now, Campus Ministry will send extra chapel scanners to The Gathering to help students leave chapel quickly and safely. Be sure to bring your student I.D. to chapel in order to receive credit. If you haven’t done so already, go ahead and delete Teal Pass from your smartphone. photo courtesy of Lipscomb...

Fortunately for the Lipscomb community, all 11 students that recently traveled to London are safe and accounted for, per university President Randy Lowry via an email statement sent to faculty and staff on Friday. London is reeling after a bombing at the Parsons Green Underground Station yesterday — Britain’s fifth terror incident this year. 29 people were injured in the attack, but according to the BBC, none appear to be life-threatening. The “Lipscomb in London” group was on a train to Edinburgh, Scotland, at the time of the attack. Lowry also noted that Parsons Green is on the opposite side of town from where the group is housed in Islington. “The incident occurred nearly an hour’s commute away from where the ‘Lipscomb in London’ students reside during the semester-long program,” Lowry said. “We have been in contact with families to assure them of their child’s safety.” Robyn Shannon, a sophomore from Hendersonville, said the group was initially shocked to hear the news, as they had spent Thursday in Notting Hill, which is also located in West London. However, the incident is not stopping Shannon and her classmates from getting the most of their stay in the English capital. “We still feel safe enough to travel within London,” Shannon said. “We know this could happen anywhere, and we don’t want fear to stop us from experiencing a different culture.” Ally Whiting, a sophomore from Colorado Springs, Colorado, said their distance from the attack also helped to ease nerves – including those of family and friends. “The distance has helped us all react calmly to (the bombing),” Whiting said. “There wasn’t...

The student body elected Carson Panovec as SGA President after students voted Tuesday in Bennett Campus Center. As President of SGA, Panovec said he plans to focus on advocating for students and communicating with administration. “I would use SGA’s two most underused committees to: get ideas, feedback, and concerns from students, and increase communication and build relationships with the administration,” Panovec said. “This would allow SGA to take the thoughts and ideas of students to the administration to accomplish things that SGA couldn’t accomplish on its own.” Stephen Hemmerly was elected as Vice President. Tyler Dove ran unopposed as Treasurer and Sierra Sparks ran unopposed as Secretary. Senior Class Senators include: Brandon Cunningham, Brent Horswell, Matthew Jafari, Vince Law and Rebecca Robertson.
