“Campus Security,” “Hydro-Flask” and “Nun-of-That” all made team costume appearances at the Student Activities Board’s annual dodgeball tournament. The event was a Halloween season hit once again, allowing the student body to come together in an epic competition for the title of dodgeball champion and a large purple trophy to show that Lipscomb pride. The competition was heated as teams battled it out to the end slowly being eliminated in a winner-play-winner format. “Campus Security” took on “The Mechanics” in the championship round. “Campus Security” has won the tournament two years in a row, but this year the streak ended. “The Mechanics” won the trophy for 2019. Arriving on the heels of one of the worst seasons in program history, new women’s basketball head coach Lauren Sumski is embracing the doubters as the motivation for her team. “We were excited,” Sumski said.“I was fired up when they [the ASUN preseason poll] picked us ninth.” This is just the response you would expect if you have spent any time with the young head coach. Her excitement, enthusiasm and can-do attitude are a breath of fresh air for a team that many times last season seemed defeated before they even took the court. “Usually, all of those preseason rankings are just based off of the former season, and that’s exactly where we finished,” Sumski said. “We don’t make any qualms about it; we never have.” But Sumski knows something that the poll voters do not: this is an entirely new team. “We have a lot of returners who I think have stepped up and improved in different ways,” she said. “We have some transfers that I think are going to add to us tremendously. And I think we have some young kids who are really going to be able to step up and help us really early as well.” One of those returners is junior guard Taylor Clark, who was voted as ASUN preseason player of the year. Clark, who missed parts of last season with injuries, was Lipscomb’s leading scorer last season and the only player who averaged double-digit points. The Lipscomb men’s basketball team will start its season with a different head coach and a lot of fresh faces Tuesday, Nov. 5, inside Allen Arena. Expectations are not as high as when the Bisons started its campaign last year by being picked the preseason favorites to win the ASUN conference by multiple media outlets. The Bisons also went on to have one of the best seasons in program history last year; the Bisons won the most games in the programs NCAA era history (29), made it to the ASUN Tournament championship game, and ended its extended campaign by placing second in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT). This year the ASUN preseason media poll predicted the Bisons to finish in fourth place, while the ASUN coaches poll predicted the Bisons to finish in fifth place. With former Lipscomb men’s basketball head coach Casey Alexander leaving after last season to coach down the street at Belmont, Lipscomb filled its head coaching vacancy by hiring Lennie Acuff. Acuff was formally the head coach at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, where he had been since 1997 and became the winningest head coach in the history of the program with 437 wins. Fanning Hall experienced an uninvited male early Friday morning. Grace Daubenmier, a sophomore psychology major from Kijabe, Kenya, said she awoke to a man entering her dorm room in search of a girl named “Niesha.” After Daubenmier informed the unidentified male that her Fanning suite housed no one by that name, he left the room but ended up returning, proclaiming that he had the correct suite number, she said. “I think Bekah [her suitemate] saw him, and he was like, ‘Well, there is this girl out there who saw me, so I need to close the door.’ So he closed the door,” Daubenmier said. After he closed the door, he began a search of the dorm room. “I asked him if I could help him, and he started looking around the room and looking at pictures and said that he sells vapes,” Daubenmier said. “And then he was asking me questions about what I like about the school and where I’m from.” Daubenmier said she answered his questions while trying to text her friends that he was in her room. During the exchange, Daubenmier ended up giving the man her Instagram to keep him calm. “I was like, ‘Actually I think you need to go,’” she said. “I walked him out, and right after I came back, he was texting me that if I found the girl then he would be waiting out back.” Daubenmier called her RA, who ended up contacting Campus Security. “Officers responded immediately, and the young man left campus,” said Assistant Vice President of Public Relations and Communication Kim Chaudoin. “This is a good opportunity to...

When attending “Bright Star” at Collins Alumni Auditorium, “people should expect to laugh, but be prepared to cry a lot as well,” said Emma Harvey, a member of the ensemble cast. The innovative musical by comedian actor and musician Steve Martin and by Edie Brickell, former leader of the New Bohemians and wife of rock lyricist Paul Simon, will run November 1, 2, 8, and 9 at 7:30 pm; November 3 and 10 at 2:30 pm in Collins Alumni Auditorium. “The play centers around the life of Alice Murphy, it’s set in the 1920s-1940s,” said Harvey. “It is a story of loss, love, and redemption.” The leads of the show are Hatty King and Easton Curtis. The musical is the first of its kind — it’s bluegrass centered and blends that rootsy music with traditional musical theater. The play actually sprung from a 2013 album by Martin — who also is an acclaimed banjo player — and Brickell, “Love Has Come For You.” Two songs from that album are part of the score, with the rest composed by the star tandem. Brickell is credited with the lyrics, while Martin wrote the book. This show is way more focused on the adult audience and gracefully tackles real-world issues. Lauren Reed is a first-year professor at Lipscomb University, owner of her own PR agency, ultramarathon runner and now a mountain climber. Professor Reed teaches Intro to Public Relations at Lipscomb while she successfully runs her PR agency, Reed PR. On the first day of class, Professor Reed told us she would be leaving in September to hike Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. Everyone had questions and concerns about her trip, but I got to sit down with her after her journey to talk about everything from hiking and heartbreak to human nature. “This is my first time ever doing something like this but I knew I wanted to do it.” Reed said, “This very spur of the moment. I’m not a climber, and hiking is very new to me.” Reed is a member of the Entrepreneur Organization, or EO, a group of successful business owners. There was the talk amongst the group to go to Kenya to get some business insight on a local safari; a few discussed leaving a couple of weeks early to hike Kilimanjaro. This was the group she would later decide to climb with. Six members of EO set out to hike Kilimanjaro, but only three made it to the summit. After long days filled with hiking and altitude sickness mounting, the summit was seeming more and more elusive. The night the group was supposed to reach the summit, Reed had to come off the mountain. After days of climbing to reach 15,400ft. above sea level and with 4,000ft. to go to reach the summit, she had to turn back to get to a lower altitude...
