Allen Arena was crowded with predominantly Bison fans for Thursday night’s edition of the Battle of the Boulevard. But the Belmont faithful traveled two miles down the road, took over a couple of sections and made their presence known. The trip down Belmont Boulevard paid off, as the Bruins (3-0) beat the Bisons (2-1) by a score of 87-83. The Bisons nearly overcame a 19-point deficit, but a late-game turnover with nine seconds left prevented that from happening. “They didn’t do anything at all that surprised us,” Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander said. “And I’m sure we didn’t do anything at all that surprised them. That’s just…it’s a matter of who executes the best, and that’s usually the team that wins.” Senior guard Garrison Mathews finished with a team-high 27 points for Lipscomb. Meanwhile, Belmont freshman forward and Nashville native Caleb Hollander posted a 21-point performance, and he also had the play of the game when he forced the game-sealing turnover against junior guard Kenny Cooper. The first half was a tale of momentum swings. Belmont started out hot with a 15-5 lead, but the Bisons responded with a 25-9 run. The Bruins eventually went on a 13-4 run to take a 37-34 halftime lead. Fast-forward ten minutes through the second half. During a media timeout with 10:57 left, the Bruins held their largest lead of the game at 19 points, 65-46. “The beginning of the game, I just didn’t think we played with enough energy,” Alexander said. “And then the beginning of the second half, we didn’t guard their actions very well. On Tuesday night, Lipscomb showed “The Theater of Life,” a documentary about Italian chef Massimo Bottura’s attempt to feed the world. Unfortunately, the audience at this event did not meet the amount of people that was expected. Only a few students made an appearance minutes after the documentary started. The hostess decided to wait for more viewers before continuing with the initial plan. Just three students decided to tag along and watch. Bottura’s vision was to open a soup kitchen and treat the homeless with tasty meals and comfort. The food they collected was mainly generated from the Milan Expo of 2015. Bottura wanted to end the food waste situation while helping others in the process. He transformed an abandoned theater in the district of Greco into a gourmet restaurant for the homeless and other nearby shelters. The space, called the Refettorio Ambrosiano, would accommodate around 90 guests. The goal was to send a message that food can never be a waste to the homeless or anyone who needs it. “We open our home to make them feel part of our society,” Bottura said. One couple featured in the documentary scrapes by selling bracelets, always wishing for a home. Refettorio is still running and with the same purpose. There is a new way on campus to receive Amazon packages: Amazon Locker. Located next to Starbucks in the Bennett Campus Center, the bright yellow locker, labeled Karlek, is hard to miss. To use the locker, first, go to Amazon.com and enter your location to see the Amazon Lockers near you. Second, add the locker to your Amazon address book. Then, when you shop and place an order, you will have the option to send the delivery to the Amazon Locker. When the delivery arrives, you will receive a code from Amazon to enter on the locker kiosk to retrieve your delivery. When your item arrives, you have 3 business days to pick up the delivery or it will be returned to Amazon. If your item is eligible, you can even return it through the Amazon Locker. Anybody can use the lockers, not just Prime members. Unfortunately, there is a limitation on the size of the object you can have delivered to the Amazon Locker, since the largest lockers are only the size of a kitchen cabinet. You also cannot order anything from the kiosk itself. It is strictly for inputting your delivery code. “You can get in the lockers 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which is pretty neat,” Walker Cheatham, an employee of the campus post office, said. “The locker was supposed to be running today (Friday), but due to the weather it has been delayed to opening up on Monday or Tuesday,” Walker added. On Sunday evening, the 75th Golden Globes kicked off awards show season. The show was presented live on NBC and hosted by late night talk show host and Saturday Night Live alum Seth Meyers. This year’s show was not only historical for the milestone 75th year it has been in existence, but also held historical significance for the statements made. The red carpet looked a little more monochromatic this year, with many of the actors and actresses donning black and wearing “Time’s Up” pins to support victims of sexual harassment and abuse in the workplace, as well as woman’s equality. There was much to be talked about throughout the evening, including who the Hollywood Foreign Press Association chose to honor for their contributions to film and TV. Oprah Winfrey was the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement. The actress and TV personality made history as the first black woman to win the prestigious award. In her acceptance speech, she shared personal stories and, addressing the night’s theme, statements of female empowerment. Winfrey capped off her speech with a stirring sentiment for women that “a new day is on the horizon.” That speech kicked off speculation that Winfrey was considering a presidential bid in 2020. Another highlight of the evening was 101-year-old actor Kirk Douglas returning to the stage to present a Golden Globe. The screen giant presented Best Motion Picture Screenplay with daughter-in-law Catherine Zeta-Jones and received a standing ovation from the audience. The event check-in software, Teal Pass, is no longer being used by Campus Ministry for easy check-ins to The Gathering chapel. The ticketing software, a Nashville startup, was introduced at the beginning of the fall semester and suffered a few hiccups. Now it’s being discarded in favor of the original scanning method. “Until a system and a program is tested and in place, we are going back to the old system,” campus minister Cyrus Eaton said. Lipscomb University was one of the early adopters of the technology. “Ultimately it’s a great idea but it’s not ready,” Eaton added. Some students took advantage of the software to check in to chapel without actually attending. For now, Campus Ministry will send extra chapel scanners to The Gathering to help students leave chapel quickly and safely. Be sure to bring your student I.D. to chapel in order to receive credit.
